  1. This pick, and also the one of Miller, reminds me that I have a few photos of the seven Twins prospects who played in the AFL this past autumn. If any adoptive parents want one, let me know. I can't guarantee good quality, since the stadium lights played havoc on my insufficient skill at overriding the auto-focus.
  2. Side bet (libation of the winner's choice at the next ballgame): Bizzle makes it to the majors before Miller.
  3. Kind of like football teams scheduling a patsy for Homecoming? Let's surprise them, this time.
  4. So do many. Otherwise there would be no accounting for the people who declare George W Bush as too librul or Hillary Clinton as a conservative sellout.
  5. Greatest pitcher of all time? Or greatest human being of all time? (Yes.)
  6. When Lance Lynn was signed, I found it necessary to remind posters "this is not a Terry Ryan thread". I was inclined toward going ahead and starting such a thread, but was a little short on time. Deduno Abides's thread-starter here managed to encapsulate approximately what I would have said, had I done so. For context, I was a long-time supporter of Ryan, who felt about a year before he left it was time for him to go. This has been an unusual off-season, to put it mildly, with various useful players languishing on the open market even past the opening of Spring Training. Early estimates of contract values were regularly being under-achieved. It was the off-season that Terry Ryan was born to thrive in, and it's his bad luck that he didn't get the opportunity. Lowball offers were his stock in trade, and he likely would have succeeded in obtaining several useful players. I am very happy with the job our FO has done this time. Next off-season will likely be a different beast, and it remains to be seen what they will accomplish in a seller's market, if that's how it plays out. So far, so good, and the jury's still out. For many reasons, judging a FO takes a long time.
  7. Age surely plays a role in this. Kershaw came up to the majors at 20. Being on an innings limit at that age would seem standard. I compared game logs for Mejia and Berrios while writing my erlier post in the Lefties thread, and Berrios did indeed go deeper into games than Mejia during his stint in the high minors. But then, I'm not claiming Mejia has the same high-end potential than Berrios. Just - not so fast - let's not give up on him as a possible workhorse quite yet.
  8. That's how the game OOTP does it, but I've been burned before by their interpretation of arcane rules.
  9. A minor detail (no pun intended)... When a player is reassigned to minor league camp, that doesn't actually activate the minor league option, does it? I assume the option takes effect around Opening Day. Thus, if a roster change proves needed in the meantime, one of these players could still go north and it wouldn't count as an option?
  10. Maybe that's how it looks in aggregate, but if you go a little more granular to his game logs, in his last couple of years in the high minors he was getting through the 6th inning often enough. In 2017 for example he had only 6 AAA starts. Two he went well into the seventh, completing it in one case and getting two outs in the other. One start in May was bad and he was yanked after four. Then his other start in May was apparently some kind of tune-up for getting the call to the majors, because he went three innings with good results. Then in August-September he went down to AAA again, and had two very short starts with good results, again apparently to work something out. That brings the IP/GS number down, but the usage pattern doesn't suggest he's a 5-inning pitcher when right. There are some rough edges and he's not a finished product, but I can't quite see such a level of pessimism around him that I would simply flush him as a starter.
  11. Well, sure, but we'd have to outbid all the other teams to get him. LaMarre, we've got wrapped up.
  12. I keep going back and forth on this. I'll go with 90 wins, but with low confidence in this team's floor quite yet. The organization is still in flux, and the acquisitions we're so happy about come mostly with risks and question marks attached. The upside is to my mind 100 wins and World Series aspirations, a breath-taking proposition we haven't had in years, but we could also suffer through a sub-.500 season yet before reaching the promised land. Strap in, it could be a wild ride with a rough landing aboard this rocket ship with deep space potential.
  13. OK, in the spirit of the Twins' impenetrable Rule-5 drafts the past couple of off-seasons: Curtiss plus cash considerations plus a PTBNL, for Bizzle plus equal cash considerations plus the same PTBNL. Final offer.
  14. The airline is about to cut off my access. I'll get back to you soon.
  15. I'll take John Curtiss. Counter-offer: your Fernando Romero for Curtiss. You can throw in Bizzle if you wish.
  16. I don't want left handed starters. I want starters who can get left handed batters out.
  17. Spot-checking at b-r.com's Spring numbers, his opponent quality is lower than Buxton's but higher than Granite's. Read into that what you will, about how much opportunity to shine is being given.
  18. I don't think they can set up some perpetual motion machine. They make some long term moves, they fill in with one-year deals. It'll be like this every year, in that view. So far, so good.
  19. Improve the team each year, that's all I ask. Our FO seems to have done this.
  20. One also needs to like their own life data being gathered a lot. https://www.engadget.com/2018/03/09/moviepass-the-new-face-of-unbridled-data-greed/ George Orwell was close: Big Brother is business.
  21. From a statistical point of view I'm sure you are correct. Call it a Worrisome Development, then. One year removed from TJS doesn't allow teams the luxury of waiting for a trend to develop before deciding. Their forecasting techniques need to be derived from other pitchers' experience instead, to give guidance. Let's hope they are right about Lynn - and as always, a one-year contract has a difficult time being truly bad. This signing has a chance to be really good, or it could be Jason Marquis-like.
  22. Moderator's note: Everyone, this is not a Terry Ryan thread. Start one, if you like.
  23. D'oh! You are quite right. I blame my fact-checker. Yeah, that's the ticket.
