  1. An average everyday 2B is nothing to sneeze at, if that's how it plays out.
  2. Oscar Wilde had this quote defining a cynic: "a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing." You'd think Oscar had gotten his training as a student of the game of baseball.
  3. Calling someone salaried isn't a get-out-of-jail-free card. If someone works under your direction and you routinely require greater than 40 hours a week, the pay had better be such that minimum wage laws and overtime laws aren't violated.
  4. Apparently my handy-dandy sarcasm-O-meter was mis-adjusted when I read it. As you were.
  5. So your position is that the high BABIP that year was a skill, whether innate or acquired? In that case what happened to that skill the following season? Skills like home-run hitting or base stealing don't tend to disappear quite that suddenly for a player of that age. Or, if it wasn't luck, and it wasn't skill, what term would you pick for it?
  6. Humble prediction: they're all gonna be tough.
  7. Maybe one of the MDs who read this site will chime in, but my impression is that B-12 and Iron supplements are both commonly taken by injection, at least in the quantities needed to move the (ahem) needle. Oral supplements likely are just excreted.
  8. I'm not convinced Gordon's offense would exceed Aybar's yet, and his defense is likely worse.
  9. Unlike Chief, this is a Spring Chicken.
  10. Not every pitcher signs a contract two weeks into Spring Training.
  11. I'm not touching that one. (That's my answer.)
  12. Correct! The panel would also have accepted "Pi a la mode."
  13. Q. What do you get if you divide the circumference of a bowl of ice cream by its diameter?
  14. Well, you have to be willing to throw that change-up once in a while.
  15. Q: What do you get when you take the sun and divide its circumference by its diameter? A: Pi in the sky. (Except at night.)
  16. In the other prediction thread I threw out a round-number 90-win guess, and I'll stick with that here. A young team like this, with now some depth at every position except probably catcher, has just too wide a variation in possible outcomes. They could regress to a sub-.500 record, or they could collectively catch fire and win 100. So I'll somewhat split the difference and then round upward.
  17. Maybe because they get to stay in the game longer than guys who have trouble putting batters away?
  18. They want him to pitch in the Cleveland series at San Juan, and starting on Opening Day would likely throw him off schedule for that.
  19. None of our guys can hold a candle to Mickey Marble.
  20. I'm not an autograph hound, so my biggest regret is that I still haven't gotten around to asking Stew Thornley to sign my copy of his book about Halsey Hall.
  21. That's because, despite my penchant for playing armchair GM or owner, I'm willing to spend more of my green dollars to watch people throw, hit, and catch a baseball, than to watch someone optimize their balance sheet.
  22. *shrug* It'll come to you.
