  1. I think you are right. Unless I missed someone, the previous three guys to pass 2000 were (in some order) Brandon Phillips, Victor Martinez, and Nick Markakis. That latter one completely surprised me, but he's been durable. In none of these cases do I recall ticker-tape parades after the fact, to say nothing of being scheduled days in advance. However, "gets" is not the same as "should get". There needs to be some common sense involving position. Out of 287 players to amass 2000 hits, only 10 have been primarily catchers. Joe Mauer reaching 2000 is a much bigger deal than these other guys doing it.
  2. I skipped being a spectator at the Boston Marathon because the weather was yucky here too. (OK, that was Monday, but it's a long weekend.)
  3. I posted along these lines elsewhere, but I guess it's worth summarizing: If Ryan LaMarre holds onto his current Twins stats, he will be tied for 14th all-time, in number of PA (8) while maintaining a perfect 1.000 BABIP in a major league season. The list of leaders is heavily populated by pitchers. Gary Waslewski had an incredible 1970, with 19 PA in 32 games, consisting of 1 hit, 1 walk, 2 sacrifice bunts (which slightly unintuitively don't count as "in play"), and 15 strikeouts. Among position players, LaMarre is tied for 4th if things don't change. Outfielder Bill Hall for the Orioles holds the record with his 2012 portfolio of 14 PA divided up among 2 hits (one a home run), 5 walks and 7 strikeouts. Those were his last appearances in the major leagues - you would think he must have realized he couldn't improve on perfection and swiftly retired, but actually he played a couple more years in the minors. The position-player record seems within reach, if Ryan can lace another single or two and make sure to strike out otherwise. Good luck!
  4. People who paid for 9 innings are getting robbed blind! Cross fingers for extra innings!
  5. Haven't seen an official announcement of her passing. There was recent news she is turning down further medical assistance except for comfort.
  6. They did have a 2+ minute clip of him "setting the record straight", on their front page this morning. He wasted just about a full minute of that time, feeding resentment by playing rapid-fire soundbites from other news sources mentioning his name. Boo hoo.
  7. "Oakland is the academic and healthcare center of Pittsburgh and one of the city's major cultural centers." I'm so confused now!
  8. Step in the bucket, collect your prize: an opposite field single! Thanks for the laugh-out-loud quality LOL-worthy video. I chuckled audibly. Twins Daily: come for the 1.000 LaMarre BABIP. Stay for the pitcher-running-the-bases follies.
  9. This season. Pfft. For a career, if I used b-r.com's Play Index feature correctly, a current pitcher named Jesse Chavez holds the record for plate appearances while maintaining a pure 1.000 BABIP. Unsurprisingly, his 20 PA have been accounted for via 1 base hit, 4 sacrifice bunts (which do not count in BABIP despite being technically "in play"), and 15 strikeouts. When you think about it a second, an NL-style relief pitcher stands out as the right candidate, and Chavez's only starts have been in the AL. He's 34 now. Here's hoping Jesse doesn't spoil things by grounding out a nubber to the first baseman to close his career. You want a position player? Try third baseman Fred Graf. In his one season with the Browns in 1913, he OPS'ed 1.225 and his BABIP the whole season was 1.000. Only 9 PA, but hey. He holds the career record.
  10. Disapproves: http://www.themoviescene.co.uk/reviews/_img/2393-3.jpg I learned a new baseball term today!
  11. Coming Attractions: later this season at a ballpark near you, An Inconvenient Doubleheader.
  12. As satire, the panel grades it a C-minus. As serious commentary, it earns an Incomplete.
  13. Moderator's note: we try to keep moderator activity to a minimum in Sports Bar threads, and this thread in particular has been given a lot of leeway so far, but please keep "meta-"discussions like whether or not this thread should exist out of it, and don't devolve into personal bickering. Note that the "topic" is not quite identical with the "thread". Thanks.
  14. They did a lot better than I thought. Kudos to them. Hope it keeps up. Maybe I'll try another reverse-jinx or two.
  15. It's also an island, and that word would have fit perfectly, finessing the entire question. [/editor's hat].
  16. I can only invest the time to see the first 6 minutes of tonight's game, and I hope I prove to be wrong, but my impression is that we are seeing the miracle of birth: an egg is being laid.
  17. Maybe I need to invest another 3 minutes listening to him again, but did he actually state what it is that he was apologizing for, other than the vague sorry-not-sorry bow toward "those who were hurt"?
  18. I guess you wanna spread the wealth, but I was pretty surprised to see my Adopt-A-Prospect guy, Aaron Slegers, not get the nod for Twins Daily Minor League Pitcher of the Day, it going instead to a reliever with a couple innings of work. I know it's exciting to come in and pitch out of a jam, but there's something to be said for not even pitching into one in the first place. Slegers had a grand total of 1 LOB if I counted correctly. Ho hum, six shutout innings.
  19. Another good outing for Aaron, who pitched 6 innings of shutout ball against the Gwinnett Stripers on Saturday. Five strikeouts go to his credit, with three hits and no walks on the debit side. One of the baserunners, Ronald Acuna, was erased when he was caught stealing, and another, Dustin Peterson, disappeared via a double play. So by my count there was only 1 LOB, Sean Kazmar Jr, who was stranded after a one-out double in the fifth. A pretty low-drama game for my guy. Adalberto Mejia came in to start the seventh and gave up a couple of runs (one unearned) in the ninth, with Matt McGill coming in to finish out the Red Wings' 4-2 Red Win over the Stripers. In other news, a striper is apparently a striped bass, in plentitude in the local lakes there in Gwinnettvilleland. From the local, well, fishwrap: "The name is a variation of Gwinnett Big Mouths, one of the name-the-team finalists. Team officials liked Big Mouths, but didn’t like the way it sounded. From those discussions, Stripers rose above other finalists such as Buttons, Gobblers, Hush Puppies, Lambchops and Sweet Teas." Apparently we have finally reached the point that all the good names are officially already taken.
  20. Hey, Chief! Is this is how the last few ice ages started?
  21. Keeps the riffraff out. I heard that all the time when I lived there.
  22. > Rochester Red Wings OF James Ramsey to Elizabethton I assume this is some kind of injury situation, but even so, why Elizabethton? They don't start games there for a while yet. Is this just another way of saying "extended spring training in Ft Myers", and why that, in preference to the DL? He was an off-season signing, age 28 this season, so Rookie ball clearly isn't his actual destination.
  23. Spammers are pretty good at disguising their origin. I don't keep up, but it's like using a VPN as a means to access the Internet - I think some people here have said they use this with their mlb.com accounts to watch ballgames even when living in a blackout region. Similar, in terms of effect, to how junk telephone calls oftentimes show up as being from your same area code and even 3-digit phone exchange, even though you have good reason to believe the call is coming from Bangalore.
  24. The inquiry needs to be repeated 170 more times, per Carole's statistics, before we can take it seriously.
  25. To my surprise, the Russian news agency states that there were no casualties, civilian or military, in the strikes. If anyone was going to exaggerate, I figured it would be them. There is a statement that there will be consequences, but who knows what that means. They're convening an emergency session of the UN to discuss the aggression - business as usual, in that regard.
