  1. Guess Rosario didn't get the memo about this pitcher. But... the free swinging approach pays off anyway!
  2. Sano brings home Dozier! Nothing fancy, single-walk-single against a pitcher with shaky control.
  3. We kind of try to avoid the derisive nicknames, even in game threads.
  4. Just one, going to the bottom of the first. CBU.
  5. Two straight pitches right at Votto's legs. Hughes facial expression tried to sell the HBP as a mistake, but it seems unlikely.
  6. And.... we are down 1-0 after two batters.
  7. Withholding judgement >> giving a pass >> actively applauding. Sheesh, I've already posted more in a David freaking Hale thread than I ever imagined possible.
  8. I think you've nailed it. Very clever of them to disguise their true intentions by consuming a spot on the 25-man roster with a power arm for several months while they did their dirty work of swapping Chargois for a no-name.
  9. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and conjecture that, when they decided to pull the plug on the Tyler Kinley Experience, they thought about using the open 40-man slot to try and add minor league depth first. Teams have been doing that to us since forever. Withholding judgement until we see what eventual use that 25-man/40-man spot is put to.
  10. Thanks, now my blind, seething rage on behalf of Aaron has only increased to that of the fire of a thousand suns. In any case you invested a great deal more effort* looking into David freaking Hale than I will ever be willing to. * "But it was basically no effort at all." "That's. The. Joke."
  11. That wouldn't be a very good number, would it? b-r.com shows Gibson's 2018 strikeout rate at 26.1%, well above his career norm of around 16. This still has him only 14th in the league among pitchers with a qualifying number of innings. But it's a big move up. Hope it's sustainable. / edit - Ah, never mind. You mean swinging strikes... or something. Multiple meanings of whiff.
  12. That's why I said "If I were Aaron Slegers". Blind, seething rage is just one of my many fine qualities. Never getting frustrated is another.
  13. Gameday shows the Reds starter as Luis Castillo*. He's young but has been traded a few times. Baseball-reference.com shows an odd sequence: July 29, 2016: Traded by the Miami Marlins with Josh Naylor (minors), Carter Capps and Jarred Cosart to the San Diego Padres for Andrew Cashner, Tayron Guerrero, Colin Rea** and cash. August 1, 2016: Traded by the San Diego Padres to the Miami Marlins for Colin Rea. Two days after a big trade, the two teams both say "whoops, didn't mean to include that one guy. Backsies? Okay. Whew." *** * Not to be mistaken for that guy who played second base for us for a little while and eventually netted us Drew Butera in trade. ** Not to be mistaken for that Crying Game guy**** *** Actually the trade was unwound due to an injury to Rea. Ruins a good story.***** **** Don't you just hate unnecessary footnotes? ***** Yeah, me too.
  14. It's not going to shock me if Hughes struggles and puts us in a hole but we come back to win.
  15. He actually did pretty well in AAA last year. A 3.95 ERA and 1.5 WHIP look bad, but the PCL inflates numbers*, and El Paso as a home park in particular did him no favors. The IL and Rochester have to be like a breath of fresh air for him. * Western elevations don't explain away his chronic BB problem of course.
  16. Baseball-reference.com has his signing date as February 28 in case that matters.
  17. Moreso than most pitchers, I think, Gibson's command comes and goes. It's not that his stuff is so awesome (like Berrios) that sometimes the fancy pitches don't go where he and the catcher plan; but nevertheless some games you can plainly see that even the regular pitches don't go where Gibby and the catcher plan. That's got to be the most frustrating thing in the world for an athlete.
  18. What was your favorite 2018 Slegers moment? If I were Aaron Slegers I think I'd be pretty angry at losing my roster spot for David freaking Hale. Hale had a good 2014; since then, Slegers has shown more at AAA than Hale has.
  19. Worst limerick ever. In fairness, the best limericks ever will get a person banned at TD. If you were going for Haiku, keep working at it.
  20. I'd say that if he's entered Ron Davis territory, it's a given that he got his passport stamped in Jepsen territory very close to the outset of his journey.
  21. Losing my appetite is a side effect of reading this thread.
