    Concur. It's one thing to acknowledge that pitchers throw in ways and at speeds not attempted more than a few times per game in the past. But trying to score from first on a double in the corner? That was old when Alexander Cartwright formed the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club. Royce and the braintrust need to figure something out pronto before any more of his prime years get wasted away. The above discussion is broad and interesting, but the bottom line is he tried to do one of the fundamental things in baseball and made it as far as second base.

    Let's hope Martin starts hot with the bat. That throwing arm (check out the last several seconds of the video, where he 3-bounces it to third base) is going to limit his usefulness to LF and 2B only, and there should be too much competition for playing time at those spots if his bat is only so-so. He was drafted (and traded) for his bat, and if the bat plays at DH, then he can truly make his case.

    I think the premise is that for defense, third base is covered by a Castro/Farmer tandem. So bringing up a bat to fill what Castro covers (yesterday it was LF) is the question. In that case Martin is in play, maybe, if they think the bat is ready.

    The braintrust here at TD seems to have missed this tidbit. I do see it on the player's mlb.com page transactions list. He seemed to have had a decent enough spring with the bat, although obviously in tiny sample size. I thought he was a good non-roster pickup, and I'm going to assume he requested the release. Oh well.

    I didn't see a current FWN thread, so I thought I'd start one, with this tidbit from yesterday's Game Thread. Baseball-reference.com confirms that no player has maintained a 3.500 OPS or higher for more plate appearances in a season than Royce Lewis's 2. He's in elite company! (Company that includes King Felix Hernandez in 2008., with a homer and a sacrifice bunt.) Here's hoping that this distinction doesn't exist for too much longer. Unless of course he keeps this up all season when he comes back.

    He made the final out. Considering his team was behind 8-2 at the moment he came up with the bases empty, I'm a little surprised he didn't hit one out of the park for a meaningless run. Bitter much? Oh no, not me.

    I'm past that question (without disagreement), and am concerned about Kirilloff's instincts when the decision is his. Not just this one play either; I expected his transition to 1B to be smoother than it's been.
