  1. AM's post was flagged for moderator attention, but by the time I woke up this morning to look, it seems that you all have it sorted out. Still, as max said, it serves as a reminder that humorous sarcasm can be both a sharp instrument and an imprecise one. It seems AM was counting on others to remember past posts he has made, but this is often not a safe assumption. Be kind in your posts, be kind in your responses to what seem like unkind posts from others, in particular don't try to correct others' behavior by clever subtext in threads, and the site will be better for it.
  2. Reusse invested a paragraph in acknowledging that Ryan's judgement about last offseason's FA pitchers has worked out pretty well, while challenging Ryan's judgement mainly about two pitchers (and an outfielder) in the rest of his article.
  3. The Comments Policy is pretty clear about this, and not just for pay sites: Not allowed... 5. Copying entire stories from elsewhere on the internet. This is copyrighted content, and we want to respect that. If you're pulling a quote or an example to give people a taste of a story, that's fine. If you're copying everything because you're too lazy to summarize yourself, that's not fine. If it ever becomes a problem and has to be addressed in the Policy, I'm sure it would say that pay sites need to be even more restrictive on what constitutes fair use.
  4. GMs never promote unwisely, or in a situation with no good options?
  5. I'm with you and Brock on this, but I'm not optimistic that our idea of "marginal" lines up with how GMs look at it. Guys like Parmelee, Benson (when he was still ours), Deunsing - yes those are guys who might contribute to a major league team now or someday and could sweeten a deal involving Morneau/Perkins/Doumit. Not Walters, De Vries, Swarzak, Dinkleman. Basically anyone who might clear waivers isn't going to contribute anything in a deal. For obtaining top talent, Ryan has only a few chips to bargain with.
  6. The trade was in 2010. The Twins won the division that year. I hated the trade the moment it was made, too. Just not for that reason. I must be misunderstanding you.
  7. I'm with YHIMH - don't care much for trading within the division unless the benefit is a lot greater than what's demonstrated in this article. (Which is no criticism of the article - thanks for laying out the possibilities.)
  8. Fien's from California, and when I attended an A's game last year Fien was chatting with a bunch of people in the stands during pre-game, hugging and so forth, presumably friends and relatives. My main memory, though, is that I couldn't figure out who he was for a long while, I guess until he turned so I could see his number. He just looked like a regular Joe, so that I wasn't even certain he was one of the players. maybe just a clubhouse guy. Reinforced one of the pleasures of baseball, that people of ordinary stature can play this game at the top level. (Except... his b-r.com stats are 6'2" and 205, making him not a giant but certainly of athletic build. Teams sometimes inflate those numbers.)
  9. Tyler just turned 23, so he's not exactly young for his league. He's putting up good numbers on offense, and if he's a plus on defense then he's got a chance. He basically can't afford a stumble in any future seasons as he works his way up the organizational chain. Definitely fun to root for him, going forward.
  10. I think there is a CBA limit to how much of a cut (20%?) they can offer him while he is still under contract. Once he goes into free agency, then any agreed-upon contract can be signed, but of course any of the 29 other teams can offer something too, and by the time the player has reached that point, he may as well listen.
  11. Pretty good job by Perkins, getting Hafner to pop out harmlessly to right field to end the game.
  12. It's a fine line between the overly-quoted "no scholarships" position and "let's see what the young guys have got". Parmelee seems to be falling on the wrong side of that line with his demotion.
  13. Probably frustrating for CR fans, even if they can be hopeful about the new guys coming up. But that's life in a single-A market I guess. And it is so great for the organization, to have promotable guys at each of these levels, rather than guys languishing or treading water as organizational filler.
  14. I can only imagine the number of times he got banned in the USAF.
  15. Changes are surely coming and I'm not inclined to get much worked up over one slot on the 40-man except if it involves exposing someone young to waivers.
  16. I've seen the phrase many times in the sense Seth meant, and dictionary.com seems to back him up on it, with definition 2: Untracked | Define Untracked at Dictionary.com 2. Informal. achieving a superior level of performance after a slow start: The team suddenly got untracked and began to score.
  17. Yes, but in all fairness, due to his speed on the basepaths he's no more likely to score on a subsequent base hit than if he'd stopped at first base in the first place.
  18. Because the players aren't the general public, for one thing. A manager who tries to bench the public for three games because they didn't hustle will be fired right away.
  19. Sometimes a moderator will delete a post summarily. Here, I'll just say, no reason to make it personal to another poster. Thanks.
  20. One theory: if the roster he constructed had been able to stay at the margins of the pennant race, he could have made a trade-deadline deal that involved taking on someone else's payroll headache by using the cash instead of giving up a meaningful prospect. As the standings look now, this isn't likely to play out of course. Cash can be used at a deadline deal to cover the remaining salary of someone like Morneau in order to get a better prospect in return, but that's still not going to increase the payroll. I don't know what other uses for cash could help the team - spending fully on rule-4 draftees and other signings of youngsters count against the cash that goes into the owners' pockets at the end of the season, and maybe we're not accounting for this properly.
  21. Banning's too good for him. That's why we keep him around. / oh wait, you didn't mean Chief
  22. Enjoyable game - let's have about 20 more in a row like this after the break.
