  1. Herrmann as CF insurance? Has he even played that in the minors? I don't see the point when you could just throw Plouffe or Arcia out there...
  2. I'm not sure how much credit you can give to Ryan for drafting well the last couple years. The Rays had a lot of good young players coming up for a while, talent they never would have had the chance to pick up if they hadn't been terrible for several years previous. Firing RickRon AnderGardenhire is inextricably tied to firing Ryan, IMO... if you leave the GM in tact after firing the coaches, you're still giving the GM free reign to bring in some of the same personalities he was always drawn to.
  3. Some of them (us) were already going berserk over the guy who was playing first and batting third. What was his name again? Wally Pipp?
  4. I don't know, according to Pythagorean W/L, the Twins are exactly as lucky as they should be. Context is important... as a Twins fan, when something like this happens, they appear to be unlucky if you don't also follow all the other teams. You know who's really unlucky? The Rangers.
  5. Parms has been a nice surprise since being removed from the 40-man and reestablishing himself in AAA, but then again Chris Colabello was hitting real well for a minute there, too. We could trade Mauer to open up 1b for Parmey, but it would be selling (very) low.
  6. Every time the Twins have a runner in a run-down I expect them to botch it. They haven't been particularly good at executing those for a long time.
  7. I would have liked to see Gibson come back out for the ninth after 95 pitches.
  8. I don't think it's fair to Florimon to set him up to fail, either.
  9. Yeah... when Polanco pinch-hit for him I couldn't wrap my head around why P-Flo was starting in the first place.
  10. Yeah... he pulled up lame halfway between first and second. He looked fine going to first. Maybe someone in the medical field can explain how one can get a bone bruise from running. I thought they were caused by contusions, like he had been hit by a pitch in the leg or something.
  11. Kris Johnson? If they call up May, can he still play in the futures game?
  12. Pinto's caught Meyer's last two games. Bad game calling in play? Also... Meyer's getting clubbed around by lefty hitters. Could be a result of tinkering with the changeup.
  13. I'm finding it kind of weird that, now that Mauer isn't the catcher, Gardy has no problem letting his #1 catcher catch a day game after a night game. I wonder if either Mauer was asking for more rest from catching, or if the Twins FO was pressuring Gardy to take it easy on Mauer because they had so much money invested in him.
  14. I disagree with not demoting him. He's not going to fight out of the slump by sitting on the bench, and the Twins can't continue to let him flail away out there. He's just not focused, swinging at everything regardless of location, like a left-handed hitting Delmon Young. Whether he's conquered AAA or not, he's got to get his head on straight.
  15. All things considered, I'm kind of surprised that more switch-hitters don't go through a crisis of confidence like Hicks.
  16. What was the context of the at-bat? What inning was it, and what was the score? If it's early in the game, bunting only puts Dunn (and his speed) at first base. It also sets up a prime double-play situation. The Sox would still need at least two hits to drive him in, so why not let him swing away? If it's late in the game and the score is close, if Dunn successfully bunts he's going to be pinch-run for, which could be a problem if that spot in the lineup comes up again. Fairness in conversation - I'm strongly biased against just about every bunt if it's not done by a pitcher.
  17. But then we're assuming that Mauer has lingering concussion issues, and assuming that it's the primary reason he's dropped off. That's two more assumptions than saying "he's just playing badly".
  18. I haven't ruled out the possibility that there is nothing wrong with Mauer physically at all. I think we're all so surprised with how far he's fallen off that we're grasping and reaching for explanations. Sometimes players just don't perform. Occam's razor and all that.
  19. I don't think it's the back. Max and Souhan are just speculating. If the back is still a problem, the Twins probably would have mentioned it since his last DL trip. Maybe it has to do with the concussion, but how can we know? How do we know that the reason it took Morneau so many years to get back to form is that he finally recovered? Maybe he had already recovered and just slumped badly in the meantime. Maybe Mauer's just playing badly. Until someone in the Twins gives us reason to believe otherwise, that's my assumption.
  20. Mauer 1 for 11 in the series with a walk. This game's going to have to go into mad extra innings to get that .091 up to .400.
  21. You could probably trade Duensing for Trout straight up if you also offered to take on the remaining $400 mil or so on Gary Matthews's contract.
  22. Perky's comments seemed unnecessarily negative to me. They fell somewhere in between "He's got work to do" and "he's just plain awful". If I was the manager I'd give him an earful about it. Speaking your mind is one thing, running at the mouth is another. Nobody (in the organization) bludgeoned Florimon over his hitting when he was sent down.
  23. In Pyongyang, Correia pronounces you.
  24. I guess we'll never know, but it's probably a combination of things. Maybe Andy has tweaked Hughesie's mechanics a bit. Maybe he's just healthier than he has been previously. Maybe it's the ballpark. Maybe there's something to that whole "out of the NY media meat-grinder" thing. My suspicion is that Hughes has been somewhat luckier than he was in NY. As good as he's pitched, I'm not convinced he'll be able to keep going at this pace.
  25. Maybe not, but they can't force him to throw a pitch he doesn't want to. I mean, no coaching staff in their right mind would allow a guy to drop switch-hitting in the major leagues during the season, right?
