  1. I think it's clear that DSP's payroll % estimation quote was something he should have never said. It would keep the fans from bludgeoning him with it if he admitted that it was a shot in the dark, or at least a short-run estimation that has little to do with where the team is at now. I never really interpreted it as a promise, and that was what, five, six years ago?
  2. Actually I thought Shields was doing pretty well until Ned Yost gave in to his itchy trigger finger. After allowing runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs in the 6th, if Yost had left Shields in, I don't think it's possible plausible he could have allowed more damage than Yordano Ventura did.
  3. Mauer actually said recently that the concussion issues subsided in January, and he believes that his difficult season was the result of his offseason conditioning being pushed back 2-3 months because of it. Evidently he wasn't experiencing concussion symptoms during the season, though.
  4. Let's try to quantify how Mauer was coddled in 2014. Mauer was on the DL from early July to early August with the oblique injury. Outside of that, he missed the following games while active: May 5th May 6th May 7th May 8th May 9th June 8th Aug. 28th (entered as PH in the 10th inning) Sept. 22nd Sept. 24th I'm not recalling what the issue in May was that he sat out five straight. I was a bit bothered by Gardenhire sitting him out while healthy on Sept. 22nd and 24th, saying something about he wanted to get Vargas in a first during the Diamondbacks series and put him back in for the final series in Detroit when the games mattered. That D'backs series was at home. Mauer DHed 19 times. Seven of those games were after Vargas was called up on Aug. 1, so I'll give them a bit of a pass on the assumption that they were trying to gauge Vargas's fielding. In the 12 games Mauer DHed before Aug. 1, two came on days when there was a double-header, Apr. 17 and May 1, and he played first base in the other game that day. I'll be on record that playing first base twice in a double-header situation doesn't seem all that daunting compared to most other positions. So was he coddled? I do think that the Twins had him DH a little too much, considering he's no longer primarily a catcher and they had some other options who were probably best suited to DH on those days. They might have been a little too cautious with the oblique injury, considering he missed about a month, but who knows.
  5. If they stay in-house, my choice would be Steinbach. That said, I know that TR said that familiarity with the organization is something he'll consider, but at this point I'm inclined to believe that familiarity is one of the main culprits that the Twins are in the situation they're in. They shouldn't be afraid to bring in a manager who has no Minnesota connections. To me, guys like Molitor, Mientkiewicz, Glynn, Mauer, and even the aforementioned Steinbach's organizational ties should be considered a net zero.
  6. It's always been my impression that Gardenhire had his favorites - I'm thinking guys like Punto, Blackburn, and Capps, whose on-field play probably didn't warrant the rope they got under Gardenhire. I'm sure every manager gets criticized for that to a degree, whether better options exist at the time or not.
  7. Gardy was a coach for the same team for near 25 years... it doesn't get more loyal than that in professional sports. Olbermann's rants on Jeter were gold, but this is just confusing.
  8. When Terry Ryan told Sid a few weeks ago that he expected Gardenhire to be back, I believe he meant what he said. I suspect that either the Twins told Gardenhire that some of his coaches wouldn't be brought back and Gardy decided to go with them, or the word came down from Jim Pohlad that the change had to be made.
  9. 1500 reporting that Gardenhire is indeed out. I was wrong.
  10. I'm not so sure that the Royals' intention was to immediately jump from 70 to 90 wins. I think they were just trying to get more competitive quickly. The Royals had been mired in awfulness for almost 30 years... I get the feeling that the mood changed in KC, and "waiting for the kids" became more of a running gag than a long-term plan. Maybe they'll regret trading Myers down the road, but in the meantime they turned themselves into a contender, and I can't really criticize them for that.
  11. You can read it any way you like. Nolasco realizes he's not going anywhere. The Dodgers are going to the playoffs, so there's that. He phrased it poorly, but I really think he's just trying to make sure his fans in LA are still his fans. If someone tweeted to him, "I wish you were an Astro!" he'd probably play that up, too.
  12. It's just a player pandering to the fans. Back in 2007, in Torii Hunter's last year as a Twin, he told every beat writer in every market that he'd love to play for their team.
  13. All the coaches will be brought back on another 1-year deal. Gardenhire will be signed to another 2-year deal to prevent the lame duck scenario. TR will say "I didn't give them enough players", which will beg the question, why TR will keep his job (and he will).
  14. We heard for years that Gardenhire "got the most out of the least" or whatever... the implication being that mediocre players played better under his management. What I think is becoming clear is that it was less about Gardenhire coaching them up and much more about those players' talent levels being drastically underrated. The team seemed to play up the image of the cute little upstart Twins, when in reality they were a solid professional team who mostly deserved to be there. I don't think Gardenhire has forgotten how to manage... I just think his ability to manage was always overrated because he used to have good players.
  15. Smalley was on the radio this morning and went with that old chestnut "Who are you going to get that's better?" If everything that I'm told about MLB managers is true, and they really have a negligible effect on wins and losses, how could it get worse by bringing in a new one? Does every manager have the right to a stranglehold on their team until they decide to walk away on their own terms? And how do we know that Gardenhire is necessarily a better manager than anyone else? Managers are judged by winning or losing games... it's not always fair, but it's the way the system works. Any other possible criteria for judging a manager's performance is entirely subjective.
  16. I think the Twins would have to take Carlos Silva and Milton Bradley for him.
  17. That looks like one of the lineups they'd send on a long bus ride from Fort Myers.
  18. Not sure what it is that Gardenhire and Ryan think they're going to see out of Herrmann now... he's had several opportunities. Maybe he can be a functional player, but nothing he's done suggests that he should be a starting corner outfielder or a #2 hitter... if he isn't a backup catcher, he doesn't really have a role.
  19. I'll be on record that I'm not particularly interested in Melky Cabrera either. You've got to consider the other outfielders that would be playing with Hunter. One will be Arcia, whose defense is brutal, to put it as delicately as I can. The other looks like it's going to be Danny Santana, who isn't an outfielder. I think the Twins need to aim as high as they can for a left fielder, and I'm not particularly interested in part-time clubhouse chemistry specialists on nostalgia contracts. And I wouldn't hold my breath for Buxton to make his debut very early in 2015.
  20. That would look real good on a business card. Much better than Vice President of Baseball Division Titles in Six of Thirteen Years, which would also technically be accurate.
  21. With who else? Santana in CF and Arcia in RF? Blech. The Twins need a defensive upgrade in the outfield...
  22. I'm 100% sure Gardenhire and Anderson are back next year. TR already said that Gardenhire would be back. I know he backpedaled on that statement somewhat, but I believe he meant what he said the first time. Anderson is Gardy's pitching coach and I think that even after 4 90+ loss seasons that Gardenhire will be given the choice to bring back Anderson. I know that's not what most fans (including me) want to hear, but I'm convinced that the Twins organization is married to Gardenhire, 'til death do they part. He's not going anywhere until he voluntarily decides to retire.
  23. FTR, I suspect that the Twins will use Pelfrey out of the rotation to start the season and let him play himself out of it. It's not what I'd do, but it's what I've come to expect - loyalty to veterans, even to a fault. Since Meyer won't debut in 2014, I don't think he'll make the team out of Spring Training, and I'd put May's chances at about 50/50, unless he absolutely dominates in Ft. Myers.
  24. I think the best the Twins could hope for in a Pelfrey trade is cash considerations. He's not worth his contract right now and no other team is going to give up a meaningful player for him. Ultimately, if the Twins can get somebody else to pay all or part of Pelf's 2015 salary, that would be the best case trade scenario.
  25. http://www.jaehakim.com/wp-content/uploads/1999/11/Rockettes-2.jpg It was a nice run.
