  1. Every year there's an "open competition" in spring training, and almost invariably the roster decisions show that there really wasn't.
  2. He has to be open to a trade, because he doesn't have a choice. What I'm not sure of is if any other team would be open to a trade that brings them Pelfrey and the remaining $5.5 million they will owe him.
  3. The thought had occurred to me, but the question that raises is how a Sano promotion would open up playing time at first with Mauer entrenched there.
  4. For whatever amount of time off they're planning to give Mauer (which shouldn't be much), evidently they feel Vargas isn't adequate to be the #2 first baseman. I think it's a much better idea to give Plouffe some reps in the outfield.
  5. Plouffe working at first base makes me think that Vargas will not come north.
  6. The regimented Gardenhire bullpen was supposed to give everyone a comfortable role, but in practice it only made roles for the closer and LOOGY. Whoever was the designated "8th inning guy" was also the guy usually asked to come in to trouble spots with runners on. There's no reason the closer can't share that load.
  7. Fewer veterans would also be my answer. For a supposedly rebuilding team, they're awfully old, and got even older somehow this last offseason.
  8. You have to judge the readiness of prospects on a case by case basis. If you think Rosario isn't ready, that's a supportable position, but I don't think that the case of Aaron Hicks is relevant. Hicks is an outlier. Very few prospects flop as spectacularly. Teams can't get gun shy about calling up prospects because one guy fell on his face.
  9. What do you trade him for? A starting pitcher? There's a logjam there at the moment of some not-so-spectacular options that's blocking May and Meyer and potentially Berrios. A center fielder? Someone to hold the fort for a few months until Buxton might get the call? That seems like poor value. Bullpen arms? I don't know about everyone else, but I'm not a fan of trading position players with starting capability for relievers. I think you hold on to Escobar. I'm not 100% convinced that Santana's 2014 wasn't a massive fluke anyways
  10. Maybe they do have similar stuff, like Milone and Meyer both own the same Tommy Bahama shirt, or employ the same brand of dish detergent.
  11. If Herrmann is on the team, he has to catch some. He didn't catch one pitch for the Twins in 2014, making him essentially a backup outfielder. If he isn't going to catch, it doesn't matter how versatile he is, and you can do better for backup outfielders than Chris Herrmann.
  12. I was about to make a crack about Stauffer and Salisbury steak, but it's a long season. I'll save it for later.
  13. Hard to tell if Hicks could have caught that, but he obviously was not aware of where he was relative to the wall.
  14. Gotta disagree. Mauer's fantasy ranking reflects the national opinion of where he ranks among first basemen in reality.
  15. Good to hear he's planning on only two catchers. I've said it before about Pelf- he's got the inside track on the last rotation spot.
  16. Or maybe Sano comes up and they're not 100% certain he'll never spend another day in the minors. This is the team that called up a shortstop last year and had him play center field because their shortstop wasn't the problem.
  17. If both are playing well and both are active on the 25-man at any point, I'm pretty sure they will have Sano play a different position and keep Plouffe at third.
  18. Puckett was an executive vice president for a time after he retired, though I think the job was mostly ceremonial.
  19. Just for contrast, I had to look this up- in 5 plate appearances with a 3-0 count last season, Drew Butera was 0-0 with 5 walks, 1 of them intentional. So, there's that.
  20. Pelfrey got the dreaded "looks good in bullpen sessions" report... that never ends well.
  21. This could be part of why lineup construction has very little correlation with scoring runs. 1. Your leadoff hitter is only guaranteed to lead off once per game. 2. If he hits a home run, your 2, 3, and 4 hitters are less likely to hit into a double play. 3. If he hits a home run, you've already got one on the board when your "big knockers" come up- a bird in the hand vs. two in the bush. 4. He gets more at-bats than anyone.
  22. I would think having your lead-off guy jacking solo shots would be a good thing. It's the best possible outcome for any at-bat.
  23. I would guess if Milone was considered as good as his shiny A's ERA would suggest, then Beane could have gotten more for him than Fuld, and other teams would have been willing to trade better outfielders to get him.
  24. You could say all the same things about Pelfrey, and we've heard before about what a great clubhouse guy Pelf is. I think the job is Pelf's to lose.
  25. Ryan Vogelsong and Wily Mo Pena. Ah, I don't know... let's say Meyer and Plouffe.
