  1. If the plan isn't to supplement the current roster to try to win now, I like it. Gutsy. One of my biggest issues with TR has been his reluctance to commit to either building something elite or fully rebuilding.
  2. I'm going to take a little different perspective on this one. After watching the replay, Hicks's bat clearly went well past the front of home plate. If the umpire saw it as I did, there's no reason to check with the guy at 3rd. He made the right call. It didn't appear to me that Hicks was going to argue and get himself in further trouble after throwing his helmet down. I'm not going to say that Molitor getting himself tossed made Perk do his best Joe Nathan vs. the Yankees impression. I will say that I thought Molitor's argument was silly and pointless.
  3. If the 2 hour time zone difference was a factor, then couldn't we expect east coast teams to do 33% worse than the Twins while in California? I do think there's something to the Twins clenching up when they see certain jerseys in the opposite dugout (see Yankees, New York). That factor is diluted over time with roster turnover on both sides, so going back decades for evidence isn't going to tell us much. Did they get too much rest over the All-Star break? It certainly doesn't look like the Athletics or Angels did. We're always looking for sneaky angles to explain losing (and winning) streaks. In this case, my opinion is that the Twins are playing woeful, smelly baseball right now and the big reason is that they're regressing towards the mean.
  4. So... should we wait to see if there's a last minute substitution, or should we start the congressional investigation now?
  5. I was about to say the Brewers say no first... but then you had me at Duensing. I think we've got a match now.
  6. TR's approach to bullpen construction has always been 1. establish a closer, and 2. backfill the remaining spots with journeymen and injury reclamation projects. He's had success doing things that way before, but if there aren't a good number of relievers on the farm ready to step in, then there's a need for a major league bullpen signing or three. Maybe they were counting on the odd man out of the rotation stepping in and the Santana suspension threw a monkey wrench in that plan. Regardless, the bullpen was clearly not a priority last offseason.
  7. Putting too much pressure on the kid batting him sixth. Molly should have him ninth.
  8. They haven't been able to pare the roster down to seven relievers, but they might send out a reliever to add an extra starter? I don't get it. I know that the next starter could come out of the bullpen in an emergency, but that would throw everybody else off schedule. This six-man rotation idea just sounds like an easy way out of making a decision. I would make a tough choice, rip the band-aid off, and hurt someone's sensitive feelings.
  9. I don't think the Twins see Meyer as a starting pitcher at this point. I don't believe they'd make him relieve in AAA if they thought otherwise. There's a chance he becomes a decent, or maybe good, bullpen arm. IMO he'd have to be elite out of the bullpen to close the trade loss gap with the Nats. If I was TR and I could go back in time, knowing what we know now, I would not have made the Span trade. I was, at the time, willing to deal Span. I had no idea who Alex Meyer was until the Twins traded for him- I just don't follow minor league or college baseball. That's the kind of thing that is the Twins' scouts' business to know, not mine.
  10. I'm not familiar with this TBD guy... but that looks like a really old rotation for a team supposedly building for the future. Don't forget Nolasco who will still be under contract and unlikely to have trade value.
  11. Whatever they do, I don't want to see them go at it halfway. If TR thinks they have a shot, that's great. Go out and find a catcher and some bullpen help. If he doesn't think they have a shot, trade Pelfrey. Trade Suzuki as well if you can get anything potentially helpful.
  12. He was called up too early and now his confidence is crushed. He's ruined forever. I can see it in his eyes. Good job, TR.
  13. He may not take walks at all, but it looks to me like he's going to be a tough guy to strike out as he matures. He can drive the ball, but he's also got one of those "magic wand" two-strike swings. Of course it's also refreshing to see a plus-defensive outfielder....
  14. Oh, and in regards to dinosaur theme parks, life... a ha... hmmm finds a way.
  15. I know there was a lot made of Brunansky working with Mauer on pulling the ball in the air, but how do we know that he's not just doing the same thing he's had success with in games? I have noticed more swings early in the count, but in regards to hit trajectory, it looks all the same to me. Fly balls to left and grounders to second. Defenses haven't had to adjust the shift from what they were already doing.
  16. One easy switch is to let Herrmann run with the starting catcher gig for a while. It couldn't hurt. I think it makes some sense to give Nunez some more starts at short. Definitely move Mauer out of the third spot.
  17. I'd say that Zuke is worth five runs saved per game. Nobody can prove otherwise. But seriously, swapping Zuke and Herrmann's roles seems like it's worth a shot.
  18. I have no sympathy for a hitter getting beat by shifts. Either beat the shift or put it over the fence, two things Mauer is unable to do. If it's the concussion, I have sympathy for him, but he needs to get much better real fast or he'll be replaced. Too bad, that's how it's been done forever.
  19. I'm not here to gloat that I totally called this... I'm just going to remind everyone that I like, TOTALLY called this.
  20. I'm going to make a bold call- Byron Buxton will be called up after today's game. The heck with his readiness... the team is ready for him.
  21. .265/.330/.370. Whether you want to blame injuries, changes to the strike zone, or defensive shifts, Mauer just isn't the same hitter he used to be. No one is saying he should be arrested for that, but if he doesn't turn things around in a big way soon, Joe will be a major drag on this team's future. I don't think it's unrealistic to say that Sano or even Vargas will be a much better first base option in the near future and that Mauer's previous successes and local hero status shouldn't protect him from being squeezed out if it makes the Twins a better baseball team.
  22. On my Android I keep getting a huge ad for Constellation Senior Players Championship that cannot be closed.
  23. Actually it should be a suspension, if only because he gave Jeff Kellogg a stiff-arm shove.
  24. Seemed like a good time to try a squeeze play with Rosario. Dick suggests that the Royals might pitch around Suzuki to get to Vargas...
  25. Out of the kiddie pool? That's pretty aggressive... I prefer drinking out of a glass.
