  1. Hughesie needs to be reminded that he's not un New York anymore. He's got a pitcher's ballpark to work with, and a fuzzy-wuzzy Minnesota media covering him. We even got rid of the pinstripes.
  2. In general I'm not a fan of selecting relievers this high in the draft, even if the plan is to turn him into a starter.
  3. An ERA just a hair under 5... giving up 1 more HR per 9 innings than last year... and a strikeout rate that's getting way too close to Blackburnian levels for my taste. If it was Pelfrey putting up Hughes's numbers we'd be trying to run him out of town on a rail.
  4. Strikeouts are way down and home runs allowed are way up. I don't think you can say he's been unlucky. It wouldn't surprise me if an injury was suddenly reported... but if this is Hughes reverting back to form, and we've just signed him long-term... yikes.
  5. Why does he stink this year? Are we going to find out he's been trying to pitch through an injury? Was 2014 a gigantic fluke? ...your thoughts.
  6. Who's this Sanzaval guy that Bert keeps talking about?
  7. I would DH Arcia and send out a pitcher (*Stauffercoughcough*). I like the improved outfield defense provided by Hicks and Rosario, and I'm in no hurry to see Ozzie clomping around out there in left field.
  8. I think a trade is a better idea. Let's say the Twins had another starter at AAA beating the door down for a call-up along with Milone. Should they then consider a seven-man rotation? I think you shop Pelfrey and Milone around and take the best deal you can get.
  9. We've seen a pattern from the Twins offense in the last couple weeks... score quick and early, and then coast through the middle and late innings. It hadn't come around to bite them until last night. Some of this has to do with opposing pitchers finding a groove. Brunansky said something recently about hitters changing their approach from what was already working (pardon the lack of a link, go dig it up yourself if you want). From what I can see, and certainly against Buehrle last night, the Twins hitters looked far too anxious to swing often and early which wound up playing into Buehrle's hands. I'm sure there's a bit of fluke to all of this and the trend won't continue to the degree it has, but I think this could be a sign that the Twins offense just isn't as good as it has shown. So how concerned are you?
  10. I don't disagree about making the suspension for a full year, but if it's 80 games, it still makes sense to me to bar the player from appearing in the playoffs and making an extra wad of money for it.
  11. Punishing the team more than the player? I think you could argue that the 80 game suspension also punishes the team more than the player. The rule is what it is and I don't have a problem with it. Players get a pay bonus for playing in the postseason, and cheaters don't deserve that.
  12. Mauer at 1B has largely created this problem. IMO, Sano is a first baseman. I think I would trade Arcia, then move Mauer to right or left field to accomodate Sano at first.
  13. No matter how good of a reliever Meyer becomes, and even if this is the right move, the Span trade is now a fail. It's one thing to get your major league start out if the bullpen. To be moved to relief in the minors sounds permanent.
  14. Just about every hitter has better stats with RISP than otherwise, for multiple reasons. Pitchers in the stretch and/or tired, defenses unable to shift... as well as RISP situations more commonly happening with at least one out, so runners are more apt to go early.
  15. The reason that Graham has been protected is that he's a rule 5 guy, and the Twins don't want to go through a messy process if they need to send him down. They're trying to not overexpose him. I can't say I agree with that, because it limits the use they get out of a guy they're hell-bent on keeping on the roster all season.
  16. Is that you, Gardy?
  17. It's come to a point where I believe that Joe Mauer is going to hold this team back- not just because of his salary, but because he's playing a position where the Twins will have better options than him, sooner rather than later. I get all the gushy hometown kid stuff... but a tough decision is going to need to be made. Either he is moved to a different position, or *gasp collectively* another team. Think about this-if Mauer was a free agent after 2015, how in demand would he be as a FA first baseman? What kind of contract would the Twins be willing to give him to stick around and provide less-than-premium offense at a non-premium defensive position? Bottom line- I believe Plouffe is a better player than Mauer right now, and given a choice between the two, I would pick Plouffe.
  18. Part of Santana's suspension is that he is ineligible for playoff rosters this season.
  19. It's good that he's pitching well, and I do believe Milone is currently one of the best five starters on the 25-man, but... What is it they say about Meyer? All the stuff in the world will put up impressive numbers at AAA, but major league hitters will feast on him because he doesn't have control. I think the inverse might be true for Milone. He's got the control to dominate at AAA, but he doesn't have the stuff to parlay that domination to the majors. I remember Kevin Slowey had eye-popping AAA numbers as well...
  20. 'Cause all the guys who have experience and aren't doing a firable job are already managing elsewhere.
  21. The Twins already have their Aaron Hicks, and his name is... uh... I forget.
  22. Also... when Jim S. says Hunter would have stayed with the Twins for less money than he got from Anaheim, who told him that? 'Cause if it was Torii, Torii says a lot of... stuff.
  23. This is just Souhan trashing down Mauer and at the same time kissing up to Hunter. Why he compares those two particular players is baffling to me. Is Hunter a better value than Mauer? Yes... but 50% or more of MLB players are better values that Mauer for the cost. There's also players who are better values than Hunter, and others who are worse values than Mauer. That Souhan chooses Hunter and Mauer as some kind of dichotomy just smacks of Souhan's own rubelike favoritism.
  24. It might be a little premature to throw dirt on his career, but I certainly think that the Twins could stand to trade up for a new lefty specialist. Duensing's got 5 walks to 4 strikeouts... andhis xFIP is almost as bad as his ERA. He certainly has not pitched well.
