  1. Interesting, huh - it sounds like if in fact Gardy had talked to Dozier about this particular play once before, Dozy didn't listen to him. Maybe someone can reconcile the two sets of quotes, but I'm not seeing how.
  2. I'm in the "wake me up when they get here" camp regarding Buxton and Sano. Throw around all the superlatives you like, I guess I'll believe that they're the next Trout and Cabrera when I see it happen against major league competition.
  3. I'd add Pinto to that list. Not that I think he should be traded... but I feel like the Twins are throwing in the towel on him ever being their catcher, and they've got DH shored up for a while.
  4. All this talk about Joe finally recovering from his concussion reads like fan fiction to me. Considering how long the effects can last, he may still not have recovered... or he may have recovered before the season started, and just had a *mediocre* (not terrible) couple of months. That happens to good players sometimes. Until Joe says for certain that was the issue, I can't take anybody's word for it here.
  5. Indeed, the Twins are just not players in the Cuban market. There may be good reasons for that, but the only one I've ever heard is that "they're just too expensive". There's a lot of good young players in Cuba, and many of them are proving to be (relatively) worth the money they get.
  6. I'm betting that the Twins will move Sano to left field to keep Plouffe at third.
  7. Mauer was rather rough at first base for a while. I think he had to adjust to the instincts of the position - I saw him many times go after ground balls that he needs to let the 2nd baseman get, among other things. He's been much better recently. I do think it's kind of a waste to keep an athlete of Mauer's caliber at first base.
  8. Weird thing is, it appears that the volume is turned off on the ad (there's an X over the volume control) but it plays anyway.
  9. Woolite/Lysol/Finish commercials are running with sound.
  10. Suzuki's PEITTH (Pitchers' Enjoyment In Thowing To Him) is 1.000.
  11. I don't want the Twins to make Pinto into a Ryan Doumit, DHing most of the time and only catching a little - you could do better at DH, and you're also inviting the manager to keep a third catcher around. Pinto either needs to be a #1 catcher or be traded, and the Twins didn't sign Suzuki to a contract extension to be a backup, so I think they're planning on the latter.
  12. Gardy made it sound like there could be no reasonable case made for not bunting in that situation. I think that's a large part of the heat he's taking on this. The guy's batting .310 or something and he's been red hot... asking him to bunt almost completely eliminates the possibility that he could hit a double or even a triple, driving in one or two and putting another runner in scoring position. Gardy's big into lefty/righty splits, I understand, but he really should have looked more closely at Rzepcyznski's numbers against right-handed hitters (spoiler alert, they're terrible). Santana was in a great position to make a big inning out of it. It's been my opinion that 95% of all situations that call for a sac bunt occur in National League parks. I could get in to the probability of scoring runs via swinging vs. bunting, but other people have done that quite extensively. In this one situation, Gardy made the wrong choice, and what's worse he made it sound like he'd make that wrong choice 100% of the time.
  13. He seems like a long reliever/mop-up guy to me, like Swarzak. There's some value in that, but those kinds of pitchers can and should be replaced when they get more expensive.
  14. I've seen the Twins do the "rotating backup catcher/part-time DH" role with Doumit for the last couple years and it seems to me that having a player in that kind of role is a considerable waste of assets and roster space. It's almost certainly going to make the manager want a third catcher, and frequently some other guys who should be DHing are not so that you can fit another square peg in the lineup. One of Gardy's main points of criticism for Pinto is his pitch-calling, which I believe is something that can improve with experience as it's a mental tool rather than a physical one. I like Pinto a lot, but if his ceiling as a Twin is Ryan Doumit, then I really think he should be traded. I also firmly believe that another team would give Pinto a real shot to be a starting catcher.
  15. Good for the Royals. Maybe this is bulletin board material for the Tigers who are .5 games back, but not really for the Twins (11 games back).
  16. Harper's a punk, no doubt, but I actually think this is funny in a pro wrestling kind of way. It gives the Braves something to rally around, and it gives their fans an extra reason to buy a ticket the next time the Nats come to Atlanta. Nobody was hurt and nobody was personally insulted.
  17. The comp seems primarily based on positional similarity and looks, and not so much on statistics. Vargas has been a very good minor league hitter, but Ortiz was quite a bit better.
  18. I remember when Delmon Young was being compared to Frank Robinson... Not that I don't see a visual similarity between Vargas and Ortiz, I just wish we could talk about Vargas without referencing Big Papi.
  19. Gladden's not the first to make this known. Ortiz and Hardy and Gomez have all said the Twins tried to tinker with their swings to make them hit the ball the other way more. It could be overblown based on the success those guys have had after leaving the Twins, but where there's smoke there's fire in my opinion. I think this is a primary focus the Twins put on their hitters ever since the TK administration, and probably moreso than most other teams. It's not just the manager. I hear it on the TV broadcast all the time, "When a guy gets hits to the opposite field you know he's going good".
  20. I would be shocked to see Meyer up before rosters expand. It might help sell a few more tickets if the Twins announced that Meyer would be starting a game or two... I think that might keep them from stashing him in the bullpen.
  21. I think at this point people just want to see the kid pitch, whether he struggles or not.
  22. Nah... Teams that are in contention aren't going to look at Kevin Correia and say "Hey, this guy would really carry us to the postseason!"
  23. They won't if the guy they get as a stopgap CF plays well. If you pick up a good player you open up a spot for him even after calling up Buxton. To make an analogy, I don't think anybody is claiming that Hughes is blocking Meyer and May, but Correia is.
  24. Dang, if Mike Ilitch put this much effort into Little Caesar's they might make an edible pizza.
