  1. The money is spent already. TR should do what he can to improve the baseball team. Not that I necessarily agree with Hughes as a reliever next season. I'm referring more to the Mauer contract. If there's a first base option in the system that can outhit him, the bad contract shouldn't keep Mauer on the field instead.
  2. You missed one other blame candidate-Glen Perkins.
  3. Eventually they need to develop new clubhouse leaders or we might be having this same discussion when Torii is fifty.
  4. I'm disappointed that it won't be Berrios. I feel even worse for Michael Bowden. "Tell me how am I supposed to live without you..."
  5. Let's not jump the gun. Miggsy needs to learn to shorten up that swing and hit more singles to right field... and would it kill him to advance a runner every once in a while?
  6. Torii wants to retire a Twin, so unless he decides to retire, I think TR will make a new Torii contract a foregone conclusion. They're probably in a meeting hammering out the details right now. I'd also put the odds of signing Pelfrey again at 50/50. He's a gamer and he's proven what he can do when healthy. He keeps the clubhouse loose, too. Did you see him wearing that oversized Dozier jersey? Classic Pelf... what a card.
  7. Whether you were against the Mauer deal at the time, or just against it now is irrelevant. The real issue going forward is that despite his contract, there could very easily be better first base options available to the Twins than Mauer, and finding a way to not play him might make the Twins a better baseball team.
  8. I don't see the difference between what's incorrectly termed "pimping" a home run and doing the silly jump up and down bit after a walk-off... or outfielders doing that leaping butt-bump thing that they do. Nothing the Jays did while rounding the bases struck me as all that disrespectful. They're having fun, and why wouldn't they, considering how weak the Twins pitching was in that series. The Twins should be more upset about how badly they pitched.
  9. Deck chairs on the Hindenburg.
  10. I disagree. You can make a good, reasonable argument that giving away prospects for a chance at this year's wild card would be a mistake, but then why bother trading even fringy prospects for Jepsen? Sure he's under team control for another year, but you could easily pick up two or three Kevin Jepsens in the offseason without giving up anything. In addition, the Twins had some veterans they could have dealt since they decided to punt on 2015. I don't think anyone is foolish enough to believe Kevin Jepsen is the missing piece, so why not sell?
  11. I don't think it matters how much of his salary the Twins would be willing to eat. Joe's a roughly replacement level first baseman. No team would want to trade for Joe unless it got them out from under a bad contract of Nolascan proportions.
  12. It may not be the year to go all-in at the deadline. I can appreciate that. I wonder though, if the Twins were running away with the division, would it then be OK to make a big trade? Or would a Royals-like record make us think that no improvement would be necessary? My point is that it seems like either the team isn't good enough yet to really push for a championship... or the team is so good that all the pieces are in place and we don't want to mess with the chemistry. Either way, we have an excuse to not play at the grown-up table.
  13. +1. Totally agree. One of my biggest criticisms of TR has been his reluctance to commit to a direction for this team. If he thought the team really had a chance this time, then he needed to get more help than Jepsen. If he thought this team was just an early season mirage, then adding a reliever accomplishes nothing. He could have made a blockbuster deal, or sold off some vets to stockpile for next year. I would have been satisfied with either approach. Instead he chose to sort of halfway ride the fence.
  14. I agree with everything you're saying, but the Twins don't like platoons and don't like asking guys to play multiple positions unless they're utility players. I thought it was just a Gardy thing, but apparently it's also a Molly thing. They like making lineup cards on autopilot. Nobody is going to tell Hunter he's sitting in favor of Arcia.
  15. "We" as in Twins Territory. The folks who managed to watch the replay of Colabello's home run while his mom was being interviewed multiple times without so much as a dry heave.
  16. He's a good clubhouse guy, and he's come back from being out of baseball. We love that human interest schmaltz.
  17. I think Hunter and Pelfrey are realistic August trade targets. Oh, you meant targets for the Twins... whichever PTBNLs they can get for Hunter and/or Pelfrey.
  18. I'm sure they don't want to call up Arcia until there's a spot for him. Rosario's in left, Hunter's in right, and Sano will get the lion's share of DH. We know how averse the Twins are to platooning and rotating players between positions. You can make a good argument against that philosophy, but they're not going to change their ways because we don't like it. The only other option is to send out a pitcher and have Arcia cool out on the bench as pinch hitter, which sounds like a bad idea to me for a player still trying to find his way.
  19. I'm like the Pointer Sisters I'm so excited.
  20. Smith -"we'll give you Ramos for Capps." George Washington (or whoever their GM was) - "you mean proven closer Matt Capps? I dunno..."
  21. I think there's a big difference between having a few really good prospects and having a deep system. Take the bullpen (please)... one would like to think that a deep farm system would be able to at least plug some holes out there. Instead we're stuck with declining vets like Fien and Duensing, guys on hope-and-prayer comeback tours like Boyer, and, inexplicably, a guy who's certainly one of the best four starters on the roster.
  22. I go back and forth on that. When I want to be negative, I like to use "we" ironically.
  23. Twins are in free-fall mode. TR doesn't think that the minor league pitchers can help the woeful major league bullpen. Past Suzuki, there apparently isn't a single catcher anywhere in the system (I guess we have utility infielders catching in the minors or something). We have three starting shortstops, so we have zero starting shortstops. And despite the all the hype over our prospects, I'm told that we can't match the trade packages other teams are offering. I understand not wanting to give up on Buxton, Sano, and Berrios, but it seems like we can't give away our second-tier prospects. So... just how deep is the system, anyway?
  24. I don't think the long-term catcher situation can get sorted out by the deadline in any acceptable way... I'd be just OK with bringing in AJ to platoon with Zuke the rest of the season. It wouldn't take much. Shortstop can be marginally improved upon by benching/demoting Santana and running Escobar and Nunez out there. Neither is great, but either would be better than Danny right now. The main focus should be relief.
  25. Yeah, there's plenty of thoroughly mediocre baseball teams who have won more regular season games than the '87 Twins. ...and the '15 ship is sinking.
