IMO Santana is a waste of money, I'd go with Miranda instead but since they got him, they'll play him there, We need Kiriloff there as soon as possible.

I think they want to take Kiriloff slow coming off a sore shoulder. This could mean primary DH to begin with then 1B when his shoulder is 100% I hope he'd be able to get over to the OF if needed & to get some more ABs in.

An Interview With Matt Canterino
Doctor Gast commented on Doctor Gast's blog entry in Doctor Gast's Blog
I forgot the link -
I've always enjoyed Seth's interviews at Twins Daily which he gets into players' heads. Here is an interview by Aram Leighton, (I really enjoy his evaluations.) with Matt Canterino. Through this interview, I could see Canterino's intelligence, methodicalism & the control he has over his mind & body. The interview gets into the physics & mechanics of how he throws his pitches, I thought some of my TD friends might like to watch it. Enjoy

Because the Twins took on this project he takes priority over Varland until his wheels fall off. It's the way it is.

I think it surprising how raw talented Wallner, fast, strong arm & has power has only developed his power these years with the Twins. He's fast but doesn't get good jumps off the ball or run good routes, He has a good arm but is not disciplined if given a different approach his hitting could improve. Wallner has the tools to become a superstar. Larnach was once a highly sought prospect with the Twins & led the team in RBIs at the beginning of last year. Is now lucky to be on the roster now because Gordon was traded. SOs are the problem of many Twins but Larnach has a big problem with off-speed especially curveballs. Once Martin is ready Larnach is gone. Castro will have his share of playing time in CF against RHPs & LF against LHPs. Martin will be a much-needed RH-hitting spark plug in the OF.

The Twins flood national social media with their hype especially when they fall short of the main goal of making the team better. We started this off-season in great shape, like I said we have a great core to build upon & I share your enthusiasm about them. I think I'm more optimistic of our inhouse players like Miranda than you are. But I'm less optimistic about the flurry of additions at 5th SP, BP & 1B/DH which are a "dime a dozen" where they think that they can make up quality with quantity & the fans will buy it. We have a good rotation & IMO Ryan & Ober will continue to improve but we lost Gray who is a #1 SP & I'm not sure that Ryan or Ober have it in their upside this season or ever to fill that void. Yes our BP is toward the top of MLB but TX won the World Series with a poor BP. This means BP isn't as important as premium positions SP, CF, SS & catching to win a World Series. SP we need approvement, CF hopefully we're OK, SS we're fine, but at catching even with the addition of Vazquez we are ranked #15 (there is some bias with HRs over defense in WAR & the bulk of WAR came from Jeffers bat) defense should be the focus at catching, here is where we need help. With the addition of Santana, we are ranked at the bottom of 1B & DH. But IMO Kiriloff & Miranda will outshine Santana & later when Julien is moved to 1B/DH we'll be towards the top & Santana will go the way of Gallo, set aside. Last year we led the AL in HRs yet the Twins believe the only way to get better is by getting more big bats. Big bats that strike out more. We don't need more HRs when we don't need them in blowout games but by gaining many more wins in close games by clutch hitting and not striking out (which we set a new MLB record) what didn't help us by trading away that has been years our best clutch hitter. We have a great line-up but the Twins hitting philosophy is killing us. Unless we ditch this philosophy we won't advance in the postseason.

Twins Daily 2024 Top 20 Prospects: Recap & Analysis
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I second that motion, Miller's defensive prowess at a premium position is enough as long as he can get OB enough w/o striking out a lot.- 29 replies

We have a great core, & hope Correa & Buxton to be healthy at least for the postseason. Last season I could see the great benifit of trading for Lopez. I could see a great year from Lewis & a good year from Julien, I could see Vazquez to stabilize our rotation & improve our catching defense, I could see Duran continue his dominance, I could see Ryan & Ober make steady improvements & I could see Paparesta transforming our health dilema. I could see a pathway to win in the postseason. I can see us continue in these advantages but we have suffered some losses & we haven't cover those losses. IMO we haven't improve but have gotten worse. Yes we got some middle relief help but that's not enough. A lot of your premises is based on hope & hype & that's not enough. I wish I could share your optimism NJ, but I just can't see it.

How Far Has the Twins Rotation Fallen?
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Excuse my nitpicking. Gray & Lopez were both #1 SPs. IMO Ryan are both probably low #2 SPs. To replace Gray we need one of these guys to take a major step to elevate himself to a #1 post-season SP where we can compete in the postseason like last year. I expect both of them to rise up but not to the level to compensate for our loss of Gray. So in order to bring our rotation to the level of last year we need to go outside the organization. Paddack should be good but limited innings. DeSclafani is a loss not only in production but also his playing time blocks our own deserving SPs. Our present rotation should be enough to win the division but at most win only 1 game in the post,- 79 replies

Resolving the Apparent Infield Logjam
Doctor Gast replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I've been a fan of Julien Iong before most have ever heard of him. At the beginning of the '23 season, I advocated to bring him up to play 1B, while Kiriloff was out because I knew his bat was good & his glove was good enough to play 1B. I love his bat & he belongs in this lineup. But I'm not talking about the lineup, I'm talking about 2B. Julien's glove is below par at 2B. Cement takes time to set up but by its makeup, you know it will. Maybe Lee's bat won't be as good as Julien's when he debuts (but it could) but there is no doubt that his glove would be better. I'm also not inclined to include Julien in a trade that doesn't include a postseason SP- 133 replies

Resolving the Apparent Infield Logjam
Doctor Gast replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Julien should have been moved to 1B or traded for a post-season SP before trading Polanco. Now we are stuck with him at 2B (until Lee is ready & he shouldn't be rushed) because we have yet to have an INF logjam. When Lee is ready we'll have our INF cemented. It'd be too late to trade Julien for a postseason SP so our only option is to move Julien where he belongs to 1B/ DH.- 133 replies

Twins have always had problems with rotation injuries & ineffectiveness, especially going into the postseason. Last season the little they used long relief helped curb the rotation injuries yet Ryan & Ober hit a wall while pitching records 161 & 144 innings. Right now our rotation is Lopez, Ryan, Ober, Paddack & shiny new toy DeSclafani. Paddack is coming back from TJ & DeSclafani is injury-prone both should be on a limited pitch count both using the piggy-back approach. Varland should not be wasted down in AAA, he should be stretched out as one of the 2nd half piggy-back duo ready to step in when DeSclafani or & Paddack (hopefully can be avoided) would go down. The other could be Winder, Sands, or Canterino. BPs are very volatile so those in short relief should be rotated regularly going with those who are hot & those on a minor-league contract should be conserved.

My bad memories of players like Rod are tragic injuries of players not performances. One other bad memory involves an ex-Twin when Johann Santana threw the 1st Mets perfect game that wrecked his arm & cut short his career, getting no love from NY & killing his chances for a well-deserved HOF spot. Also didn't like the Twins trading him in the 1st place. But my worst bad memories are not player-based they are management-based. They are too many to name & would love to go back & undo all of them & prevent any potential future ones.

It's the old ceiling & hype vs. proven experience debate. Like with Lee who has proven experience & on the threshold of the MLB is #2 while Jenkins who has yet to play a full pro season is #1. I'm very hopeful of what Festa can do in the near future, yet I trust the Twins know what they are doing with Raya, he's still young & I like his upside, it's close.

I was in favor of the Gordon trade but seeing Larnach in that extra OF spot makes me uneasy. Larnach should be down in AAA learning how to hit the curve. Maybe we'll be lucky & he'll figure it out early in the MLB. Rotation has a bunch of 5th SP but not the SP we needed. BP is in the best shape we have ever been in. I looked at the Fangraph projections. We are in good shape at key positions at 3B, SS, CF, & pitching, we are 15th in the others at C & 2B. 1B & DH we didn't fare well. We are in good shape at RF & poor shape at LF. I'm hoping for a quick Martin call-up to help out our RH-hitting needs in the OF. Keeping Polanco would have greatly helped our 2B ranking & Moving Julien to 1B/DH would greatly help our poor 1B/ DH showing. Because of Kiriloff's injury history, it has hindered his ranking, IMO Kiriloff will have a healthy & successful season better than what's projected.

Twins Daily 2024 Top Prospects: #2 Brooks Lee, SS
Doctor Gast replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Bravo Jmlease! We have a lot of very good to great prospects coming up to play the OF why are so many fans who are so bent on putting Lewis in the OF? In the INF we have Correa, Lewis & soon to be Lee in the INF that's it and we don't have anyone else in our organization who comes close to their talent to take their jobs away, -
Twins Daily 2024 Top Prospects: #2 Brooks Lee, SS
Doctor Gast replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Thanks, Steve, great article. As I've said before Lee is very valuable in the near Twins' future helping to cement the INF with his bat, glove & his general understanding of the game. When he's ready he'll have no competition. Any thought of trading him would highly compromise the integrity of that future INF. I love Luzardo but I wouldn't trade Lee for him. Lee has a very bright future with the Twins -
MIA's fans were very frustrated by Okert's performance at the end of '23 season push & were glad to get rid of him. They like Gordon's upside plus the Gordon connection & it's kinda a homecoming for him. Wish Gordon & MIA well. Okert has been a reliable RP for MIA. Hope the Twins can solve what went wrong & do some tweaking. A win/ win trade.

It would depend on Lee's attitude & performance plus the Twins' willingness to do so. I heard about an interview with Lee asking if he thought he could break camp on the Twins roster? He said he thought he wouldn't be ready. I'm not one to rush prospects to the MLB & put added pressure on them. Now with Julien as the primary 2Bman, if Lee had a great spring training, I'd be tempted to bring him up right away.

The Twins Chose This Payroll Path
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree Ted, Twins certainly chose their path, & it certainly was the wrong path. They broadcasted their financial woes & that they were hoping to dump the salaries of possibly Kepler, Farmer, Vazquez & Polanco. What they actually did was put up a sign that reads "Fire Sale", preventing any possible viable offers. We entered this off-season with only one main need & that was a postseason SP. That need wasn't addressed but they jammed already full areas at 5th SPs, RPs & 1B positions, giving priority over our in-house viable candidates with out-house candidates. I disagree with you Ted about the Polanco trade. On paper, it looked like a good trade but it did nothing to fill any real need. We traded away our healthy primary 2Bman to be replaced by good-bad subs (because Lee shouldn't be counted on to establish himself as a MLB 2B in '24), weakening our position there. Now social media is resurfacing to focus on trading Vazquez. leaving Jeffers to man the primary position again. W/o the Vazquez safety net, Jeffers will flounder again because he doesn't have what it takes to be a primary catcher. So they'll sign an expensive leftover back-up which negates any savings from trading Vazquez while seriously weakening our catching position. You might say they're not that stupid to trade away Vazquez. That's what I said about Polanco. Polanco & Vazquez are due for a significant rebound, Jeffers & Julien are due for a regression & under these conditions, I'd expect even greater than predicted. We are under budget whether we trade Vazquez & Polanco or not. The main reason why we hang unto Jeffers & Julien is the Twins love their bats. Vazquez & Polanco's trade value is very low not able to begin to obtain any players to meet any of our needs. Jeffers & Julien's trade value are peaked very high where we can obtain Luzardo from MIA to meet our primary need of a postseason SP, creating a team that can compete in the postseason. We have already compromised 2B by trading Polanco, trading Vazquez will seriously compromise our catching situation & put in doubt our ability to put away the Central Division.- 69 replies

Castro is a true super-utility player (def: a player that can play CF & SS well which translates anywhere well). I've seen this label on players who have played the OF & INF not particularly well but are there because we wanted their bat in the line-up, Sano would then qualify for that title. Super-utility is a rare gift, most players need to focus on one position to do that position justice. Anything that's rare is valuable, So Castro is underrated yet very valuable to the Twins, to give viable much-needed depth to the OF & INF, especially after the Polanco trade.
