  1. The explanations are solid and you also do a fine job of telling us how this plays out going forward. Rodon is a beast if he can stay healthy and I believe he will. My only concern is how Buxton will manage to cover the outfield with Larnach and Rooker watching. Embree is an interesting add; good.
  2. This is a decent one year option perhaps. Miley is a solid pitcher. The Reds may want more, but I don't have any idea what they want right now. My focus in trades has been to overpay for arms that still have a few years left before free agency. The CBA really needs to be worked out before 2022 or baseball will be in a pickle.
  3. Nearly every plan mentioned thus far is a retool, not a rebuild. You seem to focus on a 2-3 year path and this may be what Falvey has planned as well. The conversations on TD are mostly aimed for just 2022 at @$120-135 million as a budget, but do consider that the rosters are reasonable going past next year as well. I have yet to see a plan that goes all in for just 2022, largely because we are constricted from a budget of $170 million or so. Your stance is fine but pushes a new direction. Most of us actually like most of the Twins players and prospects but I, for one, believe there is too much redundancy and also would like to see an improvement in defense and speed (athleticism). Thus, some people would advocate for trades for pitchers who still have 2-4 years left of contract control, according to the current CBA ( a potential boondoggle). Ryan and Ober are ok and Winder, Duran, Balozavic should also see some time at the MLB level next season. I like the prospects but they are not as highly ranked nationally as some other organizations' young pitchers (Detroit, KC). We would be very pleased to get 50-75 starts from our group and I advocate to use some of these guys in relief initially. This leaves nearly 100 starts to fill. A free agent, maybe two could be signed. Trades seem a reasonable course of action as well.
  4. Stroman makes the most sense because of his durability and athleticism at 5/$20 million, but the Twins may be reluctant to go that high and it is likely another team is willing to go considerably higher. Rodon or Syndergaard are risky and would likely cost our Round 2 draft pick in addition to a pile of cash. The Twins are in a tough place and will lose 90 or more games with a rotation of FA, Pineda/Cobb, Dobnak, Ryan, and Ober. This, in turn, may cost any chance of signing Buxton - who knows. At that point we are developing starters at the MLB level and going into a rebuilding phase. This may be one idea. I'm not sure what tolerance Minnesota fans have for another rebuild. That leaves trading, if the Twins plan on a season of competitive baseball. Risks need to be taken in trades and a few teams stand out as fair partners for possible trades: Miami, Oakland, and Milwaukee. There are other opportunities as well. The targets should be pitchers who have three years or more left before free agency and these trades will costs the Twins some prospects and current roster players. Falvey does seem risk adverse but he will look to avenues where there is a solid chance for improving the on field baseball team for 2022. Cobb or Pineda are solid choices to add as #4 starters and may even be pushed as #3 starters with two really good pitchers both above and below them.
  5. Tom, I like the work you do both with your videos and writing about the Twins and thank you. Alex Cobb may have a few good years left in him, but he is almost a #4 pitcher, similar to Michael Pineda. Perhaps the Twins can live with a bottom of the rotation pitcher sitting in the middle, but I will pass unless it is for less than $8 million. There are several trade opportunities out there and other free agents that would look better in a Twins uniform. Falvey has an interesting few months ahead of him.
  6. The Twins and Cardinals don't seem to match up. It seems like the goal was to use BTV to find a good starting pitcher, thus the LA for JF swap idea. As such I think the trade idea was sound. BTV has very limited usefulness. It is worth a look for comparison sake. I'm a Twins fan and there is no way that the Cardinals accept that trade, although it sure would be sweet for the Twins.
  7. Yes, I agree theoretically. My thinking is that the top shortstops are out of reach for the Twins, although i do have a plan with either Correa or Seager. Mondesi is a stretch and I would not give up too much for him. Galvis or a similar defensive-minded shortstop are more likely possible. Marte allows for a much tighter outfield defense, which I believe to be increasingly important, and this is a reason to also pick up Mark Canha. Buxton is the key and then some trades, but defense and athleticism needs to be improved in my opinion. We are also trying to keep close to $130 million as a budget.
  8. Good question - so sign Starling Marte and Ehire Adrianza as insurance, with Marte in LF initially.
  9. Stewart, Gordon, and Jay were all poor picks as was the recent pick of Cavaco. Nevertheless, the MLB draft is a difficult gamble and I wouldn't lose too much sleep over the fails. Every team has some luck. The Angels had two picks together late in the first round and their second choice was Mike Trout.
  10. Trades are difficult because we look more at one side than another, as do the GMs. Think about what another team wants. Does Oakland look for salary relief? Do they have untouchables, like Montas? Arraez by himself might bring Bassit, but it doesn't seem likely. What would Oakland think about getting a couple of good prospects along with a proven reliever and young slugger who needs at bats along with Arraez. Manaia and Bassit are only one year fixes and I might consider trading Arraez or say Larnach straight up for Bassitt, but I want a pitcher who has a few more years like Montas so I dangle a number of players and consider taking Andrus if it helps complete the trade. If that doesn't work and it certainly might not, I then look to other options. Arraez is a really good player and it seems a little crazy to trade him but he is blocked by Polanco and the Twins need pitching. The Twins should be asking at the very least.
  11. Great ideas Nick. I had a laugh about how careful we all are to stay close to around $130 million. The exchange of ideas is good and may be silly but there are opportunities, for sure. I am adding to the pile making changes, although I still like Donaldson. Keeping Sano to use as DH, 1B, & 3B. Nick's trade of JD loosens up a little cash. Agree to pay $7 million. If Buxton goes, I add Starling Marte at 4/$68 ($17 a yr.). In fact I want both at $17 each. Trade Larnach, Jeffers, Arraez, Lewis, and Celestino for Sandy Alcantara and Max Meyer. Trade Ryan, Strotman, Rooker, Duffey, and Canterino for Frankie Montas. Sign Eduardo Rodriguez 3/$36 ($12 per yr.). Sign Ehire Adrianza 2/$4 (2 per yr.). Sign Mark Canha 2/$20 ($10 per yr.). Sign Raisel Iglesias 3/$33 (11 per yr.). Sign Kirby Yates to 1/$2. Find a way to pick up Mondesi from KC (???) Total = @$135 million, but this is a ton of change ... however, it is the post. What would our $145 million budgets look like? Nahhhh.
  12. The Cubs traded Gleybar Torres and won a World Series. Nobody in Chicago regrets that move. I love prospects as much as anyone but they are just unproven parts of an organization. Good trades work. When Cleveland traded Rosario to Atlanta, both teams accomplished their goal.
  13. Buxton is scary. He has more than enough money to last his lifetime and likely lives a fairly subdued financial life. Byron seems pretty easy-going and focused on his family, although I have zero idea in fact. The decision for Buxton will come down to whether he feels like Minnesota is the place for him to play baseball and whether he feels the Twins are making a commitment to him. Of course, Falvey must consider the numbers (money and games played) in a reasonable fashion. Yes, Buxton is scary.
  14. MLR, the roster looks decent. I'm not expecting as much money spent on relievers. Step 1, from most people, is settling or at least knowing someting, is Buxton. It still seems really possible to find a good pitcher via trade using some of the players whose roles are already taken (Arraez, Larnach, Rooker, a catcher). Hopefully teams do not wait until a CBA agreement.
  15. We are all wondering how the Twins plan to put together a roster to reach .500 in 2022. The attempts by TD readers are just "playing around" fun. It would be more interesting to see Falvey try something other than Shoemaker and it seems to make sense to look for a decent trade considering the apparent redundancy on the current roster.
  16. The Twins traded Berrios (quite significant) and it seems understandable and now face a decision on Buxton (also significant). Willie Banks was seen as a very significant asset and might be compared to any prospect currently in value. Often trades benefit both teams. I'm curious about how many players can carry a "significant" tag. The Twins have redundancy in some positions and needs in other positions as do other teams. Falvey will be looking to improve the team via trades if there is really a plan to compete at .500 or better baseball next season. The free agent market can only fill a few parts.
  17. Worked as a beer vendor from the first exhibition game - still have my id - until work moved me out of state a number of years later. The place was a dump but there were memorable moments, maybe none better than Game 163 on a night where rain turned to sleet, outside, while we watched in warmth inside. Target Field is great and I prefer outdoor baseball.
  18. I'm liking the pitching but wondering how much Stroman will sign for in the real world. I know the board had him at $20 million and that seems about right but it also seems like he might get more money.
  19. I like the willingness to trade for a few starters and to sign a few players as well. This is a practical roster. The Cardinals may value Flaherty too highly to trade him, Sano might be tough to trade, and the Dodgers may still love Taylor. I like the idea that change is possible. Having thought about ways to look at a roster for 2022, I appreciate the exercise you have completed and it looks solid.
  20. This is a fair position and one that you and some others have advocated. This is fine, but can you or someone who also has a similar position please lay out their specific roster for the 2022 Twins to support your ideas. The exchange of plans is a basic premise behind these discussions. Naturally, once Falvey begins to move on players in November there will be additional thoughts and adjustments based on those actions. But for right now the posts concern how individuals are building a team.
  21. To a fair degree the Twins position is largely due to their unfortunate past two winters. The management has a difficult job now. The players generally sign for the best contract offered but being on a competitive team is important too. Sometimes the future is the players you have plus what can be acquired via trade or free agency. Look back over time and the prospects face a stiff challenge to reach The Show and then make a mark. The Twins can afford to trade a number of prospects as well as some of their current rostered players. It is Falvey who must find the right mix and if the Twins fall back to 90-100 losses the patience for The Twins Way may dissipate quickly. In fact, the traffic on sites like Twins Daily is tied to the hopes of the fans. This is a big offseason for the Twins as viewership and tickets are on the line coming out of two tough Covid years. Unless the team shifts to a rebuild, the future is now.
  22. Almost, so you are saying it is possible too. C'mon Falvey, get it done.
  23. Is it possible that this site is messing with our ideas too much. I think they are often in the range of reasonable but when I see Buxton's value versus others, just to use one of many examples, I question how much anyone should quote or use the values. Kepler is a super valuable player in my opinion even though I am frustrated with his ground balls into the shift. Oakland does have an interest in trading Manaea or Bassitt due to cost but I want to overpay for Montas and believe it is possible.
