  1. It was an aggravating loss on many levels. We don't have anyone close to a shutdown closer. Duran just isn't that guy at all. (Maybe rime to try Jax again?) Our 'd' is crumbling. Martin a d Julien did us no favors. Twins not playing like contenders. Guess we'll probably have to deal with the annual long time on the IL for Buxton. When he goes down he might as well take a vacation. And Correa..sigh...is he done? Hard to like this team at the moment. ( fans in Cleveland may be s8nging the same song. It's on the Playlist in Baltimore too. Crazy season. But last night's loss was a real foul ball. Contenders can't be losing like that with only a few games left.
  2. Had they gotten an even modest outing from Duran Twins might have pulled it off. Pitching will sink this team for sure. Bad loss.
  3. My kingdom for a bullpen that can shut down the opposition after Twins fought back so well. Duran was simply terrible when it mattered tonite. We've seen too much of Twins giving games away late.
  4. Lewis with another pathetic AB. He is in a pretty bad way these days. The magic is gone. Then Kepler looking worse followed by Santana waving at 3 that weren't strikes. What a horrible way to kill the rally that should have tied the game. Lewis is fast becoming a big disappointment. He isn't the same guy that started the season for us.
  5. It just stinks having 2 key players out with no real 'hope' in sight...just speculation it seems. As for who you want to play post season...a fools paradise. Right now I can't picture 'wanting' to face Houston or NY. O'S can't get out of their own way. It all could change on a dime. We need our key players to play. Color it anyway you like sports fans. On an unrelated note.. Chisox are 31-101 with 30 left. Will they break the Mets 40-120 mark of sucktitude? (They had 2 games cancelled in 1962)
  6. I have always felt without exception that the most useless marker for a starter is the Quality Start. On what planet has allowing 3 over 6 innings ( an ERA of an unacceptable 4.50) ever been a standard of excellence. How many games are won when you allow 4.5 runs? Used to be for years when starters pitched far deeper into games that any ERA over 3.00 was not good enough. That clearly has changed. I wish they would ashcanthe stat completely or modify it to allowing just 2 runs over 6 innings. Feel completely free to disagree keeping in mind dinosaurs have been extinct for a long time!!
  7. Twins whiffed on Richards. While they are still in the division race mathematically realistically unless they get their injuries under control they won't keep up with KC or Cleveland. Too many holes Hope Buck and Lee are ready now. More and more seems like Correa is done. Nothing positive coming down the pike there. Tonkin might help. Guess we'll see. It was very disappointing seeing Ober pitch last night. We are counting on him to be a stopper. Last night's game was a complete waste of time and pitching resources. Everyone has an opinion about this team. Mine would be not consistent enough to be anything more than a 3rd WC. Of course the Os are also fading so there aren't any guarantees anymore. I have always felt this tlyear the AL East belongs to NY.
  8. Yep.What the hell happened to Ober tonite? In the old days if a game didn't make it to 'official' it was cancelled and totally replayed. I sure wish that would happen tonite. Having to pick this game up down 9-1 this early is a colossal waste of pitching. But all suspended games are now resumed. Hate it when the ace gets crushed like this. So best case..go through the motions for 3 1/2 innings...pray for rain and go home after 5 miserable innings. Wasted night.
  9. Hard to base legitimate analysis on luck...which honestly and really doesn't exist. Some teams perform better than others and over 162 games 'luck' isn't a factor. Sometimes the other guy just outplays our guy because he is skilled and is in the majors for a reason. A ball crushed by a good hitter when Cedric Mullins or Byron Buxton is in CF is more likely to result in an out. Hitters know that. No luck involved. Winning 1 run games is a neat skill that good teams draw on. Cleveland has led the Twins all year because they have outplayed them...on the field...not on paper or in some metric notebook. I can't seriously think that they merely have been luckier. Twins blew yesterday's game on merit. ..failing to make the big plays when needed. The other team did so they won. I submit it was an interesting take but I'm not buying the 'luck' factor at all. It's an easy excuse but nothing more. .
  10. 1 out to get and poof another real tough ugly loss. Can't be losing like this to teams totally out of contention. Terrible 9th. Even our leadoff hit was totally wasted. Fans can rightly be ticked today
  11. There is a danger about always 'playing for the future' too much while ignoring the present. The goal each season allegedly is to win isn't it? Not just chase rainbows of things that might never materialize. Its a balance for sure...but if you have a chance to win now, you take it. How many repeat WS champions have there been in the past decades? Not many. Twins need their best guys out there. 'Saving' Buck and Carlos for later could come back to bite them, while their subs struggle, as many of them have lately, including Lewis, who honestly hasn't produced much in a month now, despite the odd HR. The debate will continue to rage as to 'win now' or play 'for the future'. Both sides have merit. Me...I'm in my 8th decade. I want to win as soon as possible.
  12. It was intensely sad watching Okert last night. What is this obsession with having a reliever only go one inning when he is pitching well and his count is very low? Play to win each game, not be a slave to 'the book'. Use your best and worry about the next day tomorrow. Tomorrow may not matter if you don't take care of today. (nightmares of the O's failure to use their closer in that awful loss to Toronto in the one-and-done playoff game) That terrible 8th inning sure kills confidence that this team can win in October. Not to mention they ran themselves out of a possible big inning with the runner getting thrown out at 3rd on the pinch single. (yeah the left fielder made a great throw but still...) As a fan who wants to win them all, this loss was very depressing. But the manager knows what he's doing, right? Right? Or not right...
  13. The game sure elicited a lot of passion. Winning still seems to be job #1 here for the most part. Aside from the pitching and Rocco, Santana bailed them out quickly in the 9th but the hitters did nothing at all after that. The 10th inning was unfortunate both top and bottom. The contact play didn't work at all (it hasn't worked that much to begin with..Twins are now 4-5 in extras?) The strikeouts haven't helped. Both Lewis and Julien do whiff in key spots. I'd like to see Lewis cut down on the k's, especially with 2 strikes. Julien OTOH really can't hit MLB pitching and he probably shouldn't be up. He was a feel good story last season, for awhile, but this year has not been kind to him. The error that cost them the game was also unfortunate. Duran was pitching OK. Should have easily been runner on 3rd two out and take your chances. Odds in your favor. Santana has come up with some pretty clutch AB's 2nd half. Twins should consider whether it makes sense to re-sign him..guess the issue would be at his age, how much high octane is left in the tank?
  14. IF he is still good for one more year, and if there is 'room' in St Paul, start him there in 2025 and see if he has recovered. I don't see much value in Twins collecting players that are chronically injured..they have Buxton, Correa, Lewis, Kirilloff..am I forgetting any others. Point is it doesn't help when too many of your key players are out for long periods of time. As for Julien, I think he has gone backwards this year. His k's have become too obvious to ignore. Lewis k's about every 4th or so AB and many of them are in key spots; but it would be nice to see how he does if he can play 120 or more games to get a better evaluation on him. He seems like he is the real deal. Julien...not sure he can handle MLB pitching. Kirilloff...needs to not be injured. We say that about Buck. We say it about Correa. Somehow, Twins are still competing at a high level, despite todays fail. No team is running the table this year. No one on target for 100 wins. Likely one or two division winners will be lucky to win over 90. Every team has had their issues. Interesting season.
  15. ok--better I should have said they ran themselves out of a potential run when the contact play didn't work. Not a lock they would have scored with 2 outs but more of a chance with a runner at 3rd rather than 1st. Of course when Vazquez fans, its all moot! Anyway, it was a tough loss.
  16. Can't ever see contact play in extra innings. Lately it hasn't worked. Twins ran themselves out of a run. Bottom of 10th was a clown show. But should never have gotten there. Alcala was terrible in blowing a 4 run lead in the 7th. I love Royce as much as anyone, but he does strike out a lot in key situations. As for Julien, he just strikes out most all the time. Twins did take 3 well played games and should have won this one too. A poorly executed top of the 10th and then a mess in the bottom.
  17. Bats were dead today. They had a couple of decent chances but the key guys had weak AB's. Get back on the horse tomorrow. Key AB was Lewis with sacks juiced. That could have turned the game. As a fan, frustrating to watch. As a player, they usually take this in stride. Long season. I want to know if anyone knows when Buck and Carlos may be back. Is Buck day to day or is he slated for a few weeks on the IL, which would stink. Can Twins legitimately catch Cleveland? They had their best shot this past weekend. They should be a solid WC though. 1st place, not so much especially if key players are consistently out of the lineup.
  18. Rocco said the team played hard and they were determined. Thoughts for those who watched the game?
  19. hey guys..not to worry! Vazquez will never be the Twins lead-off hitter but the topic did give some a chance to reinforce the mean-ness that is still this forum. For others, the comments were civil and realistic. Baseball is a very unpredictable game sometimes. For most the season Gunnar Henderson was O's lead-off hitter, despite his power and his propensity to 'k'. Finally after a slump he was replaced at the top by a most unlikely choice..Cowser. This rookie was in a prolonged batting funk with BA hovering between .210-.220 and a ton of k's. So what happened? Cowser fan off a long hitting streak and raised his average by around .30 points, while doing what a lead-off hitter is supposed to do. Amazed me for sure. Sometimes you just can't figure things out. As for Gunnar, his power has mostly disappeared, but he is hitting again. Who have been MLB's purest lead-off hitters? Guess I'd start with Ricky Henderson. You fellas add to the list.
  20. Maybe Vlad Sr and Witt Jr can hot those pitches. Jeffers sure can't. Right now he can't hit much of anything.
  21. Jeffers leads the team in HR's but has done precious little since May. Maybe the most disappointing hitter on the team this season (despite the HR's) His 'd' hasn't been very good either. This game had 'L' written all over it, right from the start. Regroup and get it done tomorrow.
  22. barring a 9th inning rally which seems very improbable (not impossible) our go-to hitters had some very weak AB's today when it mattered. But thats the 'fan' talking. Sometimes good pitching stops good hitting, right? There are days when erasing a 3 run deficit doesn't seem too big a task. Then there are days like today when a 3 run deficit seems like a 10 run deficit. One of those games where Twins honestly look like they want to get it over with.
  23. I guess pitchers do get some credit here but Twins have had some real lousy AB's today. They really have never been in this one, Two chances to get a clutch hit and...nothing.
