That Brian Dozier trade turned out better than expected. Smeltzer was a useful 14th pitcher on a 13 man staff, Forsythe held down 2nd the rest of the year and Raley did some stuff just not for us. Dozier didn’t do much after getting traded.
While I know the Correa trade was a salary dump we should be paying less of his contract maybe 20-25 million with atleast their # 25 prospect or a good lotto player. In that 22-30 range. Houston could still add that guy in the trade to show salary dump returns.
Stewart trade was wasted opportunity. So was Jax trade. Still puzzled on Varland trade.
II just saw that Ty France has the all-time record for highest fielding percentage for 1B with a .998 career mark at 1B. Ty France Stats, Height, Weight, Position, Rookie Status & More | Baseball-Reference.com
Trade trees are fun. Even the ugly ones. If Tait pans out and plays 10 years and gets traded this tree could go on for many years tormenting Giants fans along the way with what could have been,
The Twins need another hitter to make a run. Paddack and Ober are up and down. Lopez is coming back soon I think. I haven’t followed the team as much as I would like this season but they may as well go for it. They aren’t going to get much talent at the trade deadline so may as well win.
If we are talking 20/20 seasons then Bader has a shot. He needs to get his steals up which he should be able to do and he needs to get those 9 HRs which might be the harder part for him.
Who are the other 1B options that we had with the resources available? That tells you if this is a good signing. Odds are it was the best move available. If he knocks 80-90 RBIs that’s what matters most I guess the other numbers predict how likely that is to continue. So far the 35 RBIs suggest his signing for a million is a great value. His clutch numbers do too. He is not someone you want up to start the rally however. And for his numbers outside of RBI to be presentable, he needs to keep his average over .270. If his power numbers pick up and he ends the season with 550 AB and 30-35 2Bs and 12 -15 HRs with his average over .270 he may get resigned to stay another year. Unless Cleveland pays him 12 million to replace Santana next year….
I agree with the Ryan pick at the top. Our pitching has been so good it would be hard to do a full roster of least valuable pitchers for the team.
looking at Alcala he is like a Jekle and Hyde pitcher. He has 5 appearances where he pitched 3 innings giving up 14 earned runs and 15 appearances pitching 19.2 innings giving up 2 earned runs. That’s 2 extremes.
We also have E Rod in AAA right now. He has a .400 OBP with lots of walks. Has some power and could work his way up this year. Him in LF and Larnarch to 1B. ….. while Ty France has been ok. I wouldn’t be upset if the Twins were able to upgrade 1B and go with someone else. While not a black hole he is also not the solution for a contending team.
Looking at options We have 4 OF Wallner, Buxton Larnarch and Bader so 1 can DH if need be.
In the IF We have Clemens and Castro for 2B and one of them can play 3rd for a stretch and Keaschal can play 1B. Lewis can get demoted and see if he can get back on track. We also have E Rod getting close to being ready for a promotion. So its not like the team doesnt have options. but I would be happier if we had a better bat to add to the lineup. Someone to take time away from France and maybe play some at 3rd as well. but I dont know if it will be necessary once we get Keaschal back and if Lewis can rebound. The key is if Clemens can continue to hit. His bat came out of know where and saved the team. He has been what Lewis is supposed to be for the team.
If we are trading for a real Twins need we should trade with a team that is really going nowhere and acquire Aaron Judge from the Yankees. His bat will make a huge difference in our lineup as we work to outscore the teams our really good pitching staff is already keeping their side of the score low.
I’ll go a step further. Paddack has been boom bust he has 4 starts where he pitched 15 innings and gave up 27 earned runs. Taking this starts out of the equation you get 58 earned runs in 152.67 innings which is a 3.42 ERA. Overall Paddack has been boom or bust. Clearly you can find areas to pick apart. But he has been worth his contract with the potential to add positive value. I’m happy with that. And I will agree that I’m not opposed to trading Paddack. But even if we don’t he has been worth his contract.
