    Classify impact player. They brought him in as a potential bench player and organizational depth at a few positions. Players like this can't be ignored because he may earn a MLB spot out of ST. If not, and he stays in the organization, he might see any number of AB throughout the season and bring a veteran presence to the MiLB teams. Most every team brings guys like this every year. He could easily play some sort of role for the team this year. That is all I am saying here. Him seeing MLB time does not equate to this team being the CWS this season.

    IMO the health of the big six throughout the year will determine the success of this team. If they all stay relatively healthy, the Twins could be a legitimate threat. Unfortunately history is not on their side. Blewett could be the first RP call up from AAA after the season starts, depending on how the rotation shakes out. I would not be shocked if Paddack ended up in the BP. I don't see both Julien and France making the team. They are both very limited and somewhat redundant on the field. Gasper's potential impact can't be ignored here either.

    The Pohlads care as long as they own the team. The shaking of the financial trees as of late (as small as it is) may be an indicator a Twins sale is closer than we know.

    IMO the biggest issue regarding this was not addressed: What is the viewership for the pre-game and post-game shows? I am guessing that there are not enough people watching these to make them worth the cost and effort. If the viewership was high enough, the Twins would have found a way to keep the longer shows around.

    If this is the case, then why is the entire TD staff treating Varland like a BP is the only option here? There has not been one discussion of him as a SP (what we as fans are hoping for is irrelevant).

    I know Varland was relegated to the BP at the end of last season, but has there been any news (official or otherwise) that the Twins have given up on him as a SP or are we all just assuming? I ask because I do not recall seeing anything from the Twins on that front.

    A hard no on Lewis and Jeffers, unless you can get them on a very favorable extension with inexpensive team option years. I like the idea of extending Ryan and Ober. Quality pitching, even SP4/SP5 guys, is insanely expensive right now and will only keep going up. There is a pretty good idea of their arbitration costs over the next few years. You buy out one-two FA years at a below-market price, with possibly another market priced year that is a team option. You aren't paying a premium for guys in their late 30's. We are talking 4-5 year contracts, not 7-8. There will always be risk in these types of deals, but this feels like acceptable risk IMO.

    When he was signed, I don't think the intention was to have Santana be the full-time 1B. His performance kind of forced the issue. I don't think Julien is a realistic option at 1B. It feels like his Twin's career is on fumes at the moment, with this year being a make-or-break scenario. He is probably a prime candidate for a change-of-scenery type move. I agree that we have every reason to be optimistic about Miranda. Playing him at 1B seems like a logical decision. However... I am not one of those ready to hand him the keys. His inconsistency at the plate and field is what is causing this ruckus. Bring in someone that can adequately handle 1B along with 2B or 3B as insurance.

    Stop bringing facts to an emotional argument... Take out the horrible PH stats and those numbers would go up (but yes, PH is part of the story). Players gotta perform when given the opportunity.

    I am sure I will get hammered for this, but I have a few questions: Why is everyone so sure that the rotational philosophy is 100% Baldelli, or that it is his preferred method? The Twins have been hammered by injuries the past few years to go with some pretty poor performances from players expected to more strongly contribute... sometimes you need to play the hand you are dealt. Many times making the right decision doesn't result in a positive consequence. There is a thought process that the middle innings are just as important as the end innings. This is why the Save statistic is pretty worthless. What is more important/valuable: coming in to pitch with the bases loaded and 1 out in the 7th up by 1, or coming in to start a 9th inning up by 1? The same argument can be made for positional changes. That being said, I would also like to see if the Wallner/Larnach/Miranda group can learn to improve their splits and become better hitters. I also thought that continuing to run Margot out there as a PH did nothing for his confidence. Could things be done better? Every team would tell you yes. I am sure the inconsistencies of many of the younger position players is not helping Baldelli's confidence in extending some rope to the younger players.

    You can't look at the Bader signing in the context of the entire Twins lineup. Bader was signed as a projected 4th OF, primarily as a defensive CF backup. The Twins decided that they value his defensive skills and veteran presence more than anything else. The Twins filled a hole they could fill from FA. They are not going to get a starting position player better than what they currently have for what they paid Bader, so you fill what you can fill. The Twins are relying on Miranda, Lee, Martin, Julien, Lewis, et. al. to perform in the infield. Don't blame Bader for their deficiencies.

    Torii feels to me to be in the Hall-of-Very-Good. Such a strong career, seems to fall a little short. Nathan is a product of playing for the Twins and not winning a championship. He was underrated his entire career. It is a travesty to see guys like Billy Wagner get in and not see Nathan in that discussion. If only Santana had not thrown 1000 pitches in his no-hitter. He was really never the same after that game. He was the best pitcher for a short period of time but could not build up the counting numbers that the HOF tends to need. Unfortunately he will probably end up with Torii in the HOVG.

    Sorry Doc, gotta disagree with you here... Bader blocks nobody. He was signed strictly as Buxton defensive insurance. The Twins view on Keirsey is pretty obvious as they kept running Margot out there last year with Keirsey on the wings. Bader may or may not have been the Twins first choice, but IMO he was the best option of the four. I am happy they avoided Tommy "Josh Donaldson V2.0 Clubhouse Cancer" Pham

    I agree that, on the outside chance the Twins make a move for Cease, moving Ryan or Ober to improve another position has some logic. However, you don't make that move unless you are 100% sure Festa or Matthews will pitch equal to, or better than, those two. I am not. I would rather see them move potential than proven. I ask about Casas because we as fans assume a he is being moved for defensive liability reasons (though I did not see any mention of that anywhere and I admittedly do not know enough of Casas to judge). Is he CJ Cron or is he Rowdy Tellez?

    Could someone please tell me why everyone is so willing to trade Ryan or Ober for anything that... well... anything? I have zero understanding of this. Two inexpensive, cost-controlled for multiple years, proven, above average starting pitchers. This team is watching every penny it spends and people think that these two are basically disposable? I don't know what else to say... simply amazing. As for this article, he is probably worth a mid-level prospect, possibly Matthews (if he can field at least on average). But as others have posted, why is Boston so anxious to get rid of him?

    The answer to this has always been easy, but the execution is extremely difficult: The regional broadcast approach that baseball takes has created an uneven playing field for their teams. A national, leaguewide broadcast approach similar to the NFL and NBA creates parity. How else can a football team from Green Bay be insanely popular nationwide while (up until this year) a basketball team in New York be lost in the entirety of the sport. Once you have a semblance of income parity, you can discuss salary caps, etc. Baseball has dug this huge hole where a small handful of large-market teams drive the entire market. The Twins sign Correa to a huge contract, and Minnesota news explodes for weeks. If the Yankees signed Correa to that contract, it would be a normal Tuesday.

    Feels a little bit like a square peg in a round hole situation. Push hard enough and it will fit, though not well. CF is one of the most important defensive positions on the field. Hoping that someone (basically a rookie nonetheless) suddenly gains the correct instincts to play the position doesn't seem right.

    NFL injuries are caused by the sheer violence of the sport with half of the players carrying 30-50 lbs more than their body is designed for. NBA injuries are generally orthopedic in nature due to the constant stress the game puts on all of the joints. MLB, especially pitchers, are due to repetitive stress at unnatural angles with max effort. The repetitive torque of swinging a bat (again with high effort). The start-stop flow of the game also contributes to injuries as it can be difficult for the body to stay loose while standing for 10 minutes. People discount the role genetics play into injuries as well. Look at an athlete like LeBron James who is a genetic freak combined with a great work ethic. The amount of miles on his body is staggering and he still competes at the highest level with virtually no injuries. Others, like Byron Buxton, have bodies that seem to be predisposed to injuries as their bodies (for whatever reason) do not hold up over time. Teams try to remedy this in various ways. The Twins have had a mix of bad luck and rolling the dice on previously injured players, combined with normal baseball injuries over the past few years. At some point, this needs to swing the other direction.

    Yes, yes.... time to be optimistic. Glad to hear everyone is supposedly on track. The cynical part of me is saying wait until things start to matter.
