    I was thinking about this yesterday... We may be close to a point where the Twins need to send Lewis down to AAA for some work. Not because of the slump, but more because of where it seems his head is at. His public comments make it seem like he is totally lost out there and grasping at straws. This is where the Hitting Coach is supposed to step in and keep Lewis keep perspective, but that seems to not be happening. Send him down, get his head on straight, and bring him back up. Did wonders for Wallner last year.

    Gunnar Henderson is probably as untouchable as players get in today's game. What you are proposing would not get that deal done.

    Other than Santana and Liriano (who were basically automatic wins, SP3-5 were not good in 2006. The total SP WAR for the season for that group was 11th in MLB. The BP in 2006 was light years ahead of the rest of MLB, that is what kept them in things. Their hitting was average, but they had the league MVP (Morneau), 6th in MVP voting (Mauer) and peak Cuddyer and Hunter. They were almost guaranteed to score runs through the heart of the order. The 2006 lineup was about 10 spots higher in MLBN runs scored than this team. The last 25 or so games for this team have been buoyed by great pitching, but also Kody Clemens and his 1.137 OPS, Harrison Bader's 122 OPS+, a resurgent Jeffers, Buxton playing almost every day, and an effective Paddack. If you believe all of those things will continue (along with Wallner coming back hitting like pre-injury, and Lewis doing something) then sure, 71 wins is possible.

    Sorry, but no. In this day and age, you do not trade quality, inexpensive SP for just about anything. Two of the SWR, Matthews, Festa trio will be in the rotation next year, with the other as insurance.

    100% agree on the pitching. It is fun to know that when any of the big 3 pitch, you almost expect the Twins to win.

    70-38 That is what this team would need to do the rest of the way to win 100 games. Be optimistic for their current play, but be realistic when making throwaway comments. A lineup that regularly throws out 3-4 AAAA players will not continue to produce throughout the season.

    Agree with most of what is being said here. The SP group, led by Ryan and Lopez, are carrying the bulk of the load for this team. A few weeks back there was pundit discussion, with some assenting comments here, about trading Ryan to the Orioles for prospects. That take continues to look pretty bad.

    The only true way fans can protest ownership is with their checkbook. The fact that people are not flocking out to see this team should speak volumes.

    As you said previously, his career ERA is 4.33. No reason to believe he cant stay in that 4ish range. If he continues that, he will not be moved.

    Please remember we are talking about our SP4 or SP5, not SP1. Most teams would be very happy to see 6-7 IP and 4.00 ERA from that slot. I can see a trade happen, but only if I squint my eyes really hard. Teams in pennant races do not trade effective SP when the return will be low

    Thank you for clarifying. I used stopgap, but probably meant it in a different sense. I agree that somebody should be pushing France at 1B. Even the best teams have positions that have little to no depth. Here is where finding the cheap-but-usable, or 1-yr make-good, contract is important. The Twins have had some success finding that at 1B over the last few years. The immediate problem is that Miranda and Julien (options 1 and 2) have basically blown their opportunity and and Keaschall (possibly option 3) is out for a while. The "we don't know what we don't know" argument about McKusker is probably holding him back (queue the references to Keirsey being held down by the man). However, to your point, when is the last time the Twins have developed a quality 1B? Morneau? Is it institutional or a run of bad luck? I think more recent drafts have prioritized positional flexibility guys, which tend more towards the Brooks Lee type. They really don't have much in the way of bat-first (or bat-only) guys in MiLB.

    I think I get what you are trying to say: You are concerned the Twins will become or are a team full of "Ty France players". I understand that, and with a financially capped team it makes sense. But that is not the Twins. They have talent with higher expectations that either are injured or just not producing. Ty France would look totally fine batting 7th or 8th in this lineup if Wallner, Correa, Lewis, and Castro were healthy and/or producing at expected levels. My point is that every MLB team will have a handful of spots (including starters) that are stopgap players filling a position of need. The Twins have had success filling the 1B spot over the last few years while waiting for someone in MiLB to stop up and grab it. Miranda, Julien, now maybe Keaschall.

    While everybody wants to be the Dodgers, very few teams have rockstars at every position. Finding cheap, serviceable players at positions of need is very important. You can argue how "serviceable" France is, but I don't think he is the biggest problem the Twins have at the moment, especially looking at the injuries and sub-par play this team has seen from players expected to contribute. I do think Keaschall might have an opportunity to take some AB from France at some point this season (again... injuries), but there is nobody France is blocking in MiLB. Considering the cost/benefit, I am having a hard time finding an argument against France at the moment.

    Frankly I read this headline and expected to see an outpouring of negative comments attacking France and the organization. Call me pleasantly surprised to see realistic comments and expectations. While not putting up rockstar numbers, he is adequate for the moment. For $1M, nobody should have been expecting the moon. We all want the $20M masher at 1B, but you have to pick and choose with this organization. The Twins have been fairly successful picking 1B from the scrap heap over the last few years...

    Full disclosure: I am a huge Pete Rose fan. The things that made Pete Rose great are the same things that people love about Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, et. al. - the supreme ultra-competitiveness. Unfortunately with that narrow thought process comes huge warts and problems. Gambling problems is a common theme these individuals. I am not here to make excuses. Pete bet on baseball. By all accounts he always bet on his team to win, never to lose. He never threw games to make money. You can make your own decision on how fair the penalty is. The baseball HOF has always been political and rarely about quality. No clear directions on what should be considered when voting on worthiness. Guys like Greg Maddux not getting 100% of the vote because a few knuckleheads and their moronic views. MLB deciding who gets into the HOF when they have no connection to the voting process... If MLB had similar directions to the NFL (only on-field actions should be considered), this discussion would be a lot easier. I think the HOF is just as much about history than celebration. I think Pete's on-field accomplishments make him a no-brainer for the HOF. I also think his plaque should say "Pete Rose, retired as all-time hit leader, was banned from baseball for gambling". Give the good and the bad.

    You forgot "opportunity" and "luck". Some players just need an extended opportunity without looking over their shoulder. I am not saying Gasper is one of those guys, but sometimes you don't really know until they get a solid run.

    MLB has gone away from "pitchers" and is choosing "hard throwers". People forget how effective pitchers can be throwing 88 mph if they have control, effectively mix up pitches, and can call good games.

    Winning cures all they say. I talk a lot about the big six staying healthy and performing will always give the Twins a punchers chance. Lopez, Bailey, Ober, and Buxton are all doing what is expected. Lewis is just coming back and Correa has been just short of terrible. It helps to have Paddack and a few of the relievers pitching well. The offense has shown a little life, but it needs to be sustained. The Indians are pretenders, it will be tough for them to maintain all season. The Royals and Twins are somewhat similar. The TIgers are real. The Twins still have their work cut out for them if they are going to make a serious playoff run.
