  1. Payroll outlay being salary and luxury tax. I have done my homework, you do yours.
  2. The Suns total payroll outlay this season is almost $100m more than the next team. You can't complain about their willingness, of lack thereof, to spend money.
  3. The Suns will pay about $188m in luxury tax this season. The next highest is the Wolves at $105m, followed by Boston at $65m. Still think they aren't willing to spend money? I can give you 2 pages on why the Suns were a 6th seed last year, but this is a baseball site. Needless to say, money is not a problem here.
  4. Here is a reason to be optimistic about these two potentially coming in as owners: Last year the Phoenix Suns paid more in luxury tax penalties than the entire Twins payroll. They get it. Keep your fingers crossed.
  5. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5992891/2024/12/13/billionaire-ishbia-brothers-emerge-as-bidders-for-minnesota-twins-source/ I might be wrong, but I believe the Phoenix Suns paid more in luxury tax penalties than the Twins had in salary last year. We can only hope...
  6. Don't confuse bad clubhouse guys with agitators. Pierzynski was anything but a bad clubhouse guy, yet other teams hated him. Think more Josh Donaldson, hated by all. Clubhouse contentment can go a very long way. While you may not see immediate results on the field, strong clubhouse culture can help younger players improve and play a huge role FA recruitment. Only teams that have an extremely established culture from top to bottom can truly integrate bad clubhouse guys. Josh Donaldson with the Twins was a key cog and he knew it. He could get away with anything. Josh Donaldson with the Yankees was an extremely small part. He had to conform. Correa brings gravitas, but the Twins are young. There needs to be a lot of caution with bringing in guys with a bad clubhouse history.
  7. Another Stu article that is more truth than satire. Keep digging Stu!
  8. My only response here is that it is still very early in the offseason. It would not surprise me to see something happen as late as Spring Training when every other team has a better idea of their strengths and weaknesses. That being said, I have zero expectation to see any major move of consequence, on or off the field, that will impact the fans in a positive way. (Short of selling the team that is)
  9. If the Twins were willing to commit some money, they should: - Look to extend Lopez 1-2 more years - Lock in Ober and Ryan for 1-2 of their FA years - Be willing to keep Paddack SP will keep this team competitive. They have other issues, but a strong SP staff will always have them in the discussion.
  10. I agree with most of this post. However, in professional sports, less financial obligations when selling a team can be an advantage, not a disadvantage. Look at the Mets: A new owner comes in and tries to be the savior of the team by spending lots of money. Bad teams can become good teams very quickly in pro sports. The on-field product for the Twins has a very optimistic future: - Young talent on great contracts at the MLB level - A young, strong SP core under contract for a few more years - A strong MiLB system, with Jenkins potential lighting up the future - A (currently) very manageable payroll A new owner could come in, spend some money, and with potentially 2-3 moves make this team a legit WS contender.
  11. My first thought upon seeing the title of this article was "Just three?" How are the Twins going to repair fan/team relations? Are the Twins going to extend Ober? Ryan? Are the Twins going to go full youth movement and trade anyone outside of arbitration? Is there any realistic FA the Twins could sign today? How does the potential sale of the team impact how business is being done today?
  12. Not necessarily. If the Twins like what they see in Spring Training, they can make a trade to keep him and not be subject to the Rule 5 rules.
  13. With the skyrocketing price of SP, it makes financial sense to keep Paddack on the roster as a possible SP4/5 or heater out of the BP. He would essentially be pitching on a make good contract, and if he starts the season well the Twins could look at an extension on a player they know (which is very big in Minnesota territory). On the other hand... With the skyrocketing price of SP, moving Paddack makes sense. The Twins have a relatively inexpensive veteran they could move to a team needing a SP3/4/5 and probably get a decent return. For a team looking to keep costs down, this makes financial sense, especially if they feel Festa or Matthews is ready. Seeing both sides of the argument, I would be fine with either decision.
  14. Keeping in mind the rules in place for Rule 5 selections, if there is someone they like/pick, expect some sort of trade to soon follow so they do not have to keep them on the MLB roster all season. Teams are always looking for depth, especially pitching. If there is someone the Twins see as an possibility, they should make the move. These are generally very lost cost options, especially for THIS team.
  15. Agree this would be a good time for this discussion. You have to wonder about how a pending sale impacts the Twins signing long-term contracts at the moment.
  16. My takeaways: Whether they admit it or not, every FO takes every call on every player. There is only one "untouchable" player in MLB right now and that is Ohtani (because of the Japanese connection he brings to California). Discussions do not mean actions. Everybody needs to chill out until more concrete news comes out about a potential trade. Correa is the best player and heart/soul of this team. There is no argument about this. I agree with all the comments stating that if they do move him this offseason, they might as well waive the white flag and go complete rebuild. Any Correa move will result in prospects in return, not impact MLB ready players. You move Correa, you move Lopez, Duran, Buxton, probably Lewis and anyone 2 years away from FA. Regarding comments on this article being TD clickbait, this is an instance where I do not agree. This is not a pie-in-the-sky article about who the Twins could get when everyone knows it will not happen. The team brass made a public statement about listening to offers, this needs to be addressed.
  17. Movie theaters do not really make money on movie tickets, just like convenience stores do not make money on gasoline. Their main income comes from the inflated prices of the goods the sell.
  18. Similar to movie theaters, fans have just come to expect exorbitant prices on food at ballparks. When you have a captive audience and set the rules, there is no reason to change. I have not seen any studies on this, but I would bet that stadium food prices have a negligent effect on attendance figures, meaning if you lowered all food prices by 20%, there would not be a comparable change in attendance figures.
  19. I agree with the premise that a trade may be the only way the Twins attempt to make a substantial upgrade this offseason. That being said, I am really not sure who they would move that would result in an upgrade. You have untouchables (everyone from Correa/Buxton to Ober/Ryan to Keaschall/Jenkins) that would require complete organizational upheaval to move. You have players that should outperform their salary (Lewis, Miranda, Wallner, Jeffers) that do not make logical sense to move. Salary dumps: Paddack has limited value, Vazquez is a slight over-pay on the current market. Not sure what a solid move would look like
  20. Clicky McClickbait. Other articles for the immediate future: Why trading Buxton and Correa for prospects (while paying their salary) is a good thing How the Twins will sign Juan Soto and Pete Alonso. Do we need to trade Walker Jenkins now? For the record: I did not read this article, I only clicked on it to comment.
  21. I am sorry to burst your bubble, but all professional sports are entertainment. The "competition" is secondary to enjoyment and making money. The age of podcasts have really shed light on the behind-the-curtain aspects of professional sports in America, but especially the NBA. Hearing the players talk about how games are officiated, how rules are enforced, etc. is amazing. If MLB was more concerned about the competition itself, it would legislate out manager/umpire arguments, on-field fights (especially RP running in from the bullpen), umpires grandstanding on the field, and anything to do with time restraints.
  22. Considering they have a handful of RP slots to be filled and at least one SP slot to fill (along with two stashed in AAA for injury support), I would argue they are in no position to move a pitching prospect unless they get one back in return. (Paddack is in the wind, SWR will be given the SP4 slot, but is still in prove-it mode IMO)
