  1. The phrase I have always heard is that it takes 40 games to really determine what type of team you are. We are almost there, and it isn't pretty. The SP is starting to come around. The BP has been a roller-coaster. Injuries have decimated the lineup, but Lewis and Castro back should help. There is time, but they really can't slide any further back then they currently are before the mountain becomes too big.
  2. A little late to the party, but I think there are a lot of things that Falvey gets blamed for that can't accurately be put on him. Knowing what we know now, the Pohlads have been in sell-mode for the better part of 3 years. Falvey has had to operate within the limitations that have been placed upon him. I will be interested to see what happens if he is still around when the ownership changes.
  3. Clemens is a pure placeholder. Bride may continue to play himself into a longer term roster spot. I have to imagine the patience with Julien is about gone.
  4. The Joe Pohlad question is real. Any new owner will know that he is a liability, not an asset. Joe knows that this is his last chance to be involved with baseball, as no other team would ever hire him. That being said, I can't see the Pohlads unwilling to sell the team for the right deal just to keep Joe employed.
  5. It took 5 whole comments before the "we need to fire everybody comment that attempts hijack an unrelated article" appears. It might be a new record!
  6. New Owners: You don't need to be smarter than your predecessor. You just need to remember that fans are passionate and loyal to owners that are passionate and loyal. Just act like you care about the on-field product and the fans will follow.
  7. It is less of a college issue nowadays and more of a HS issue. Southern kids pitch almost year round (as the weather allows) where northern kids are more limited. Camps and showcases can be killers
  8. Another "we are running out of quality things to write about" article... Was there anyone, anywhere (outside of Paddack's mother) that raised the possibility the Twins should send down SWR over Festa?
  9. Assuming he gets healthy and he wants to continue pitching, he will get an opportunity somewhere. Too much talent for every team to ignore.
  10. Though you don't seem to grasp the meaning of the article or my comment, I will nonetheless try to give you some context: This article only covers 2000-2022, but you get the jist: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/3340279/2022/05/31/twins-top-prospects-injuries/ Other names we can add to this list include: Jim Eisenrich John Castino Danny Thompson That was without doing too much research. The Twins have a history of touted players getting injured or otherwise. Add it to the other Minnesota sports lore issues and you can argue "curse".
  11. I to feel like this is a list of solutions looking for a problem. That being said, how many players does this really effect over the course of a season. I mean REALLY effect? I am talking the DFA, claim, DFA, claim in a short period of time? Maybe 5-7 over the course of the year? Do you really think the MLBPA is going to force changes on something this minor that effects so few?
  12. I have long thought that Duran would be a great trade candidate. For all the noise around his speed, he brings a lot of Eddie Guardado to the closer role. Lots of tightrope walking, little dominance. The hope is that Varland can continue to be successful. The trade opportunities that would arise out of that happening could help this team immensely.
  13. Whoa there cowboy... let's not put the cart before the horse. Varland is off to a good start, but he has a long way to go before anyone can consider him truly reliable. The phrase should be "cautiously optimistic". Let's revisit this in July.
  14. I am going to bet that there is little to no data on scoring from 2b on a single, or other non-obvious advances around 3b. IMO, 3b coaching has been the biggest baserunning liability for YEARS!
  15. In a bubble, your argument has merit. But I don't think cherry picking portions of the season like this is a very accurate picture of a team. So many things go into each game: what happened the day before, what is happening tomorrow, injuries, player availability. A team could have a bad record versus a specific team because their pitchers were on the IL during that time... Any number of things go into each game. I understand the point you are trying to make, I just think it is a much smaller piece of the overall puzzle than it sometimes is made out to be.
  16. Any potential light will only show up once ownership sells the team. The lack of sale is basically holding up any potential change, be it coach, FO, player signing or major trade. All other screaming at the wind aside, nothing of consequence will happen until that deal is done. The Pohlad's do not care about the team in any way unless it affects their checkbook. Wins are a byproduct to them.
  17. Considering this team does not have the capability to go out and spend $150m on a SP2, this is what you get. Like it, don't like it, teams that are hamstrung financially need to find lightning in a bottle where they can. Paddack wasn't brought in to be an SP1, he was expected to be an SP4. Same with Mahle. If either of them performed at or above expectations, the narrative would be different. They didn't. The team keeps looking. It is hard to say with any confidence the Twins did not get a below-value contract with Correa. The amount of team options alone on this deal for a player of his caliber is staggering. Taylor - Good Margot - Bad Bader - Good (so far, though Buxton has been healthy too) As much as every team tries, there is only one Tampa Bay organization. Personally I would rather see them take runs at guys like Mahle and Paddack, then sign Rich Hill.
  18. Until they truly give reasons for the big 6 to forego money today for money tomorrow, this will never be fixed. A major problem here is that while teams like the Dodgers are netting hundreds of millions of dollars per year, teams like the Twins are content to make $25-100m per year. The lower teams are still making money (either through cash or valuation growth) so they are content. You can blame us sheep for continuing to accept the status quo and shell out money.
  19. This issue is bigger than Minnesota. MLB as a whole is losing this generation. Game speed changes have helped, but they need to find a way to nationalize the youth game more. It is harder and harder for large, densely populated cities to support strong youth baseball programs. Lose the youth, lose everything. Tack on high prices for everything (do not compare this to football: 8 home games vs 81), a messed up national vs. regional viewing process, priority media coverage of the coasts and Chicago vs the league as a whole.... nothing new here, but still scary for the MLB future.
  20. I am not sure the issue is due diligence. Looking at the totality of the tenure, it feels more like calculated risk. Look at Correa and Buxton. They got below market deals on these guys knowing there were health issues. They have made efforts to have capable backups (to varying levels of success). At the same time, when on the field, Correa and Buxton have generally been very good. Because of the financial limitations imposed on this team, I understand the need to take these sorts of risks. But when they don't work out 100%, and the wheels fall off in other areas, the optics look really bad.
  21. Even if the Twins were successful, the Pohlad-as-owners would still be hated. Pretty much sums up everything.
