  1. Maybe Falvine needs to trade a couple guys away to inspire the others. Angels went with the more traditional approach
  2. "Gotta keep the ball down" Funny how they never say that when people hit a low fastball for a HR.
  3. Nevermind... tried to embed a Tweet with the lineup. Failed https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DI56FnjXkAAIWZH.jpg
  4. Maybe I'm just not remembering correctly, but these big defensive shifts weren't a thing in 2010. Seems to me that they really ramped up in 2013/14 or so. I've always felt that the Mauer shift played a big part (along with of course the concussion) in the decline we've seen in Joe's numbers
  5. I bet he gets some games next year. He probably didn't want to commit to games when they were making the broadcasters' schedule because he was still hoping to have a team call him.
  6. Maybe the disagreement lies is the threshold for "small market" I wouldn't call the Twins a small market team. Perhaps others would.
  7. For reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Metropolitan_Statistical_Areas
  8. Obviously calling the Houston Astros a small market team in silly. They aren't. For a few years when they were bottoming out, they acted like a small market team, but that was part of their strategy (like the Cubs did). Having said that, even though they are in the 5th largest market, I wouldn't call them a large market team either. I could see Houston having a little issue with their media market size to fan base size because of the fact that such a high percentage of their population are transplants. And, you know.... Texas loves football. Market size doesn't mean everything. The Detroit metro area isn't much larger than the Twin Cities (4.3M vs 3.6M) but they have 200M payroll and the Twins have a 100M payroll.
  9. Why can't they QO all those guys? Who's going to accept it? Obviously not ALL of the free agents but Cain, Moustakas, Vargas, Hosmer.... none of those guys are accepting a QO
  10. Cain is certainly getting a QO. How good of a prospect would a team need to forego a 1st round supplemental pick? It's an interesting topic actually.... The idea of a top 35 pick is seemingly far more valuable than when you actually make that pick and a real person (with a real ranking) is associated with that pick. For the Twins, a comparable person would be Rooker. Would a Rooker for Cain rental get laughed out of the Skype chat? Probably, but that's realistically the type of prospect they will probably get in 9 months.
  11. My understanding (from a passing comment earlier in this thread) is that if he finished 5th or better in the Cy Young voting in 2019, then 2020 would kick in. You could certainly argue that if you had a pitcher finish in the top 5 of the cy young, you don't mind having him on a 1/28 contract for the following year.
  12. It will be interesting to see if he actually opts out. The market this past winter for bats was very weak. He's got 4/88M left on his contract. Do we really see him getting more than that?
  13. Seems kind of unnecessary. Now both threads lack the context of the other.
  14. In light of the Upton deal, the "Detroit doesn't dump salary" takes seem.... poorly timed
  15. That's not what I heard. They were hoping to hear an update on IF he was hurt
  16. ..... or a good 7th inning guy
  17. My question to those with this line of reasoning is: Who? Who is that Free Agent pitcher who will be going for 5/100M this winter? I don't necessarily disagree that this generally might be better option, but I'm not seeing a guy out there that would make sense. Also, don't forget that we'd almost certainly be giving up our first round pick in this scenario.
  18. This is where I'm at. The fact that he went through waivers means that teams were worried Detroit would let him go for nothing. No prospects just $56M in payroll for the next two seasons. So, the starting point in my mind for the question of "what do we have to give up" is: $56M and a flyer prospect. As the negotiations progress and some part of that $56M gets picked up by Detroit, the level of prospect(s) changes. The only way the prospects get anywhere close to the "Gonsalves and Gordon" level (which I don't think Falvine would allow it to get to) is if Detroit was picking up at least half of what owed. So now we are talking about $14M per year for the next two years. But lets even say that the Twins are picking up all of the salary.... As some people have stated above, they think that a younger $15M Free Agent pitcher might give just as much value as Verlander. While I probably disagree, let's dig deeper into that. Do you think that those younger $15M free agents will be looking for a 2 year deal? I highly doubt it. You're likely looking at 4-5 years. Now were starting to get into those high-cost years of our young core. At the end of the day, I can't say whether they should do the deal or not because I don't know what the deal is. I don't think a $56M investment in the next two years (plus about $5M remaining this year) will overly hamper the ability of the Twins to be successful, but if that $56M investment also came at the price of some high level prospects, then I'd be a strong "NO"
  19. Seems to me like he's throwing offspeed more and with my untrained eyes, I swear he's getting way more downward movement on it.
  20. Technically isn't everyone an MVP candidate?
  21. It'll probably make the Stubhub/Seatgeek maps a pain in the butt, but other than that...
  22. The changes look logical
  23. How do you know they aren't trying?
