  1. Obviously Cole is the big stretch here. Wheeler (5/100) & Ryu (3/60) might be more realistic and cost close to the same as Cole in total AAV. You could still do the Boyd trade and he’d nudge Dobnak out of the lineup. Since were betting the farm here.... let’s do it. Wheeler Berrios Ryu Odorizzi Boyd Let’s play
  2. Since we are going for broke.... Do everything you said but Move Sano to 1st Trade Buxton, Kiriloff, Balazovich for Matt Chapman (who says no?) Sign a defense-first CF free agent That’s roughly payroll neutral to the original proposal
  3. Could be... but where is the point where the Twins (or any other team) would deem it an acceptable risk. I'm sure Dyson doesn't want to go an entire calendar year without getting paid. Sign him to: 2020 - $2M 2021 - $3M That's probably a little more than is necessary, but that probably gets it done on Dyson's side. At that point you're competing against all 29 other teams, so a little overpay (if you want him) will likely be required. You might get Dyson toward the tail end of 2020 and you'd have him for 2021. If Dyson gets fixed, then $5M is worth it. If he's not fixed, then you're lighting $5M on fire.
  4. Interesting thought experiment.... Would you rather have: Odo and Pineda - for $36M or Cole and Smeltzer - for $36M Feel free to replace Smeltzer with any of the other guys like him (Thorpe, Gonsalves, etc)
  5. Except he's had league average start duration, but above average start results.
  6. Here's a link to an MLB Trade Rumors article about potential QO Players. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/09/forecasting-the-qualifying-offer-market.html
  7. Seven QO in 2018. https://www.mlb.com/news/list-of-players-who-got-qualifying-offers-c300130990 Keuchel Corbin AJ Pollack Grandal Ryu Harper Kimbrel Ryu was the only one to accept it. Nobody else ended up with their original team
  8. Yep. This. If the Twins want him back, the best way to accomplish that would be to use the QO as leverage. Not in a mean way, but as a "Listen, Jake, we want you back, but we can't let you go for nothing, so if we can't come to agreeable extension, then we're going to have to QO you." Perhaps he calls their bluff and doesn't mind the 18M 1 year deal. I mean, that's obviously more than he'd get for AAV on the open market. And on a 1 year deal I doubt the Twins would be too worried about that $18M either. Not the ideal spend of $18M, but very little overall risk associated with it.
  9. Only ONE TIME has Ober given up more than 1 run in a game this year. Not even just earned runs.... any kind of runs. July 14th must haunt him. 3 whole earned runs
  10. I mean, I agree with you that it would be incredibly surprising to see him called up, but.... why not? Obviously we've got some 40-man implications, but for a second let's just ignore those. Ober has never not dominated. Never. The only thing is, he can't stay healthy. Maybe he's injury prone, maybe he's just been really unlucky, but right now, he's healthy. Once someone is making a joke of AA, then for me, it's time to try them out in the majors. Maybe the guy's body has 1000 good innings in it. Then let's get as many of those 1000 at the major league level as possible
  11. Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhd Bleeeeessssssssssss Amerrrrrrrrrrrrricaaaaaaaa.....
  12. What is it about year 4 that makes you say that? Almost all of our top 10 prospects are at AA or higher. With a reasonable hit rate and the remaining players from our current roster, the window should be longer than 3 years. Not that I think that should preclude us from acting aggressively now, I’m just curious why you think the window is that short.
  13. Generally, I agree with you, but the existence of Ian Kennedy and his contract makes us relatively sure that if the Twins were willing to pony up money (and almost nothing in terms of prospects), they could make a significant improvement to the bullpen. For most other guys, I agree with you. You never know what other teams are asking for.
  14. This may have been stated but people are typing as fast as I can read this thread, so I skipped ahead... If the trade deadline comes and goes and nothing happens, that's just unacceptable. Ian Kennedy is the reason I'll be mad. We know that if a team offered KC a C-level prospect for Ian Kennedy (with no salary relief) the Royals would jump at it. Basically, all he costs is money. Is Ian Kennedy worth 16M next year? Of course not, but at that point, it would just be about the money and that's not an acceptable excuse for the Twins at this point. Not that I need it to be Ian Kennedy, but I just don't see any other team that is desperate enough to say "yeah, we'll take on that whole salary" so, taking on Ian Kennedy's $22M remaining money is the absolute floor of acceptability. If you're not willing to part with the required prospect capital, then you need to part with actual capital.
  15. People seem to be conflating "replacement level" and "league average" WAR isn't like ERA+ and OPS+ where league average is literally manipulated to 100. As an example Max Kepler was considered below league average offensively the last two years (OPS+ of 95 and 97), but still had a positive oWAR (1.4 and 1.7)
  16. Yeah... Feels about right, assuming the Diamondbacks aren't overly concerned with Graterol's shoulder. Now, assuming both teams would take that deal, would you rather trade that package for 1.5 years of Robbie Ray or 2.5 years of Matthew Boyd
  17. I feel like the "something else" would have to be a little more highly thought of than Gordon as opposed to the way you lay it out which makes me assume you're talking about more of a 16-25 ranked player in our system.
  18. Robbie Ray feels like a very slightly better version of Matthew Boyd with but one year less of team control.
  19. I wonder if we turned back the clock to last November and replaced “Romo” with “Cron” the threads would read almost identically.
  20. This feels like the kind of deal that’s made to get an incremental amount of leverage on other teams you might be dealing with to get relief pitching
  21. Not that it really matters, but it stinks that Kepler gets tagged with a big negative WPA on that Buxton play, when he actually accomplished what we needed him to accomplish.
