  1. That's some sad news. Wishing his family, friends and teammates the best while they deal with his loss.
  2. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/11/braves-sign-will-smith.html That would have been too rich for my blood. Braves are obviously pushing in for a run. EDIT: I guess it's technically $40-52 mill with the buyout
  3. Awesome! ... and Wheeler rejected, so he's officially there for the picking. Go get it done Falvine!!
  4. I didn't even think of this. It would interesting to see a formula for this part of the risk/value equation.
  5. This is valid, but I'll offer a little on each point that could be in consideration. A good year: He will still get to pitch against Detroit, KC and Chicago a lot. Possibly throw in a Lindor-less Cleveland. That makes it easier to bet on yourself. I also think Baldelli will continue to manage him in a way that allows him to pitch with his best stuff for most of his innings. A healthy year: This is always a risk, but I think we've seen that playing for Baldelli means any hint of injury gets rest. Well, unless you pull a Buxton and go kamikaze. Market Value: You'd have to think the market value rises on the lack of draft compensation alone. You could argue the extra year of age works against that, but good performance should make that one year of age a non-issue. Just my thoughts.
  6. Next seasons market appears better for him and no draft strings attached.
  7. This is probably the best blueprint I've seen that appears to be realistic. I like the Vogt idea, especially since he's more likely to go for a 1 year deal. Most of the catchers are on the wrong side of 30, so his age doesn't really bother me. Coming of 835 OPS against RHP is definitely attractive. I think it might take a little more AAV to keep Odorizzi, but even if that was 3/$48 mill with a possible club option attached, it wouldn't break the bank considering your conservative start. That's one of the better Rosario trade proposals that I've seen. Enlow has a huge amount of upside, so the Marlins might be inclined to invest. A change of scenery for Urena isn't a bad gamble, especially when Caleb Smith is the prize return. I'm curious on not protecting Celestino. He broke out in the second half, and I could see a team like Detroit being willing to throw him to the wolves. Do you think there will just be too many pitchers valued high enough in the rule 5 that he will slip through? Do teams get to pull back a player after the first round, or is that only in expansion drafts? I'd personally rather outright Hildenberger than Harper, but that's splitting hairs with the 40th guy.
  8. Sign Teheran to be the 4, and then delete Pineda's agent from the contacts list. Still need a 1 though.
  9. The hate runs deep .... Former Twins farmhand Nate Yeskie says no to Yankees. Love it.
  10. Looks at most of the available catchers, and they are all on the wrong side of 30. I would welcome a Grandal signing. You could probably just let Cron walk, if that happened. A Garver, Grandal, Sano, Gonzalez, Adrianza rotation at 1B would be completely sufficient. With that said, it needs to be an AND signing, not an OR signing. The pitching upgrades must be paramount. Sign Wheeler (let the pick go) Trade for J Gray, Archer or M Gonzalez (if available) Resign Odorizzi Sign Grandal The Twins would look well-stocked heading into 2020.
  11. I won't be happy to see Pineda in a Twins uniform. He can go screw over another team. Sorry to spoil the choice of adjective.
  12. Epic pitching matchup for Game 7 .... Hope it's a good one.
  13. Likely this Deadspin piece including the horrendous burrito-eating method witnessed in the comments.
  14. Twins will sign someone like Homer Bailey and trade for someone like Marco Gonzalez. That's about all we'll see added. I like buying low on Archer, but I don't think the Pirates will offer him up low enough. The other three will be too expensive in either prospects or actual money (Kershaw). I just won't believe in a splash until I see it. What's the most salary the Twins have taken on in a trade? I know they haven't ever spent more than $50 mill and change on an FA (Santana or Nolasco were the highest, IIRC).
  15. ... which is starting to sound like believing in the Easter bunny .... Everytime you think you see him, he hops into the hedge (shoulder first). Buxton isn't going to have the case that Bryant does. His injury history printout probably weighs as much as the title for Johnny Cash's Psychobilly Cadillac. It's way to much to point to as legitimate reason for not calling him up. Tony Clark just can't be reached, so you get what we've had here the last several years which is the way Tony wants it. Well, he gets it. And I don't like it any more than you (wo)men.
  16. I think I remember Levine specifically stating that they thought his bat was MLB ready, but his glove was where they wanted to see more improvement. This was after his AA breakout in 2018. The glove and conditioning/health seem to be what's actually holding him back. If defense is what you're looking for, Gordon appears to be a major downgrade from Adrianza. Have the Phillies called up Aaron Nola yet? ... oh wait. Is that Trea Turner hitting leadoff for the team that's up 2-0 in the WS? I need to go check my glasses to be sure. Speaking of infield defense .... Matt Chapman sure looks good at the hot corner!
  17. The Redskins aren't that good. I thought the score wouldn't be that close. Looks like lots of penalties and failed redzone opportunities. Definitely can't do that against the tougher competition.
  18. I don't think I would like this Taubman guy very much. He probably fancies himself above the law or untouchable due to talent. I hope Karma goes looking for him. However, I think using his actions as a reason to root for the Nationals over the Astros is silly. If one was already rooting for the Nationals, I guess this can serve as a little more fuel, but I can't see flipping due to this. I'd like to think a guy like George Springer and all the good that comes with him would more than offset this jackass.
  19. I just fear that Astudillo is way better on camera - you know, high-fiving kids and marshmallowing into walls or onto the dirt - than he is in the actual production department. He is versatile and beloved. Castro should definitely be an option, but I hope the Twins look at others (particularly left-handed hitting options). Astudillo seems the perfect 26th man, if the new 15 day rule on optional assignments allows the team to keep him there.
  20. Lewis Black always said the best things to do if your team doesn't make it gamble on outcomes or pick a team and root for their demise. The latter is so easy to do with the Damn Yankees. I could care less if Brett Gardner is a good sport.
  21. Using 2019 playoff performance as a reason to move a player would work for every other hitter on the team not named Polanco, Cruz or Arraez. Arraez still had a negative WPA and made the WPA for some of his pitchers worse as well. If Eddie's 923 OPS is an "absolute abomination", then the Twins are pretty much screwed. It's funny, Ted, how you can point to the small sample sizes of the Twins playoff games to condescend Twins fans who are fed up with playoff futility, but then turn around and twist the timeliness of how a single player's small sample size is organized across that small sample size to deem his production abominable. ... and Souhan's a shmuck? There's this old story about removing the plank from your own eye, so you can see clearly to remove the grain from your peer's. Just sayin'.
  22. I was left with a lot of unanswered questions, but, apparently, that is pretty much status quo for the Wayne Williams case. Dark and creepy indeed. Not enough to convict, but enough to close? Makes one wonder.
  23. Except for thorough homework on Sam Dyson Based on articles written and personal information divulged by both of you via different sources of media, I'm pretty certain that mikelink has been a baseball fan at least twice as long as you, Ted. This smug, condescending castoff really says a lot about you. Now, go get busy with your next piece on how Trevor Hildenberger is going to be the centerpiece of a successful 2020 bullpen. I'm sure your rosy glasses will bend the light in a way that makes that look possible.
