Littell is my pick to gain more high leverage. With the way the pitching staff is shaping up, I'm expecting to see him a lot in the 6th and 7th inning this season. Mostly the 6th, but he could get the 7th if a couple guys aren't available. I think he's ready. The second point kind of makes be short circuit. What?! Steps back!? How could you even suggest it?! I'll bite though and go with Trevor May. The only reason being that I think he is more inclined to get wrong between the ears from time to time. Maybe it's just that tendency to talk to himself on the mound after bad things happen.

I will be surprised if Ryne Harper starts the year in MLB pen, unless a barrage of injuries hits. He was effective in the first half, but he appeared to get figured out in the second half. The numbers and usage support this. If Sam Dyson hadn't been injured, I doubt he would have collected the 17 innings that he did late in the year. It's way too early the throw Wisler under the bus. Sure he's a failed starter and the ERA doesn't look good, but he has improved since moving to a bullpen roll at least on the peripherals. A quick glance makes him look to be more of a fly ball pitcher which didn't bode well in San Diego and Seattle with the all the defensively challenged corner outfielders being trotted out to play each day. Healthy years from the trio of Buxton, Kepler and Rosario could make him look like a steal at $900K or whatever they ended up paying him. I wouldn't be surprised to see him used as an opener either.

How does Southern League MVP Max Kepler not beat out Gordon and Gonsalves? Neither ever achieved his national ranking high. If it weren't for Flash and Dee, this would have never happened. Wait are you trying to build prospect helium, so that Gordon counts for more points on the trade simulator.
  4. MMMordabito
Yeah, let's not trade him. This was awesome!

I just started watching this after a co-worker suggested it several times over the course of a week or two. I'm only 5-6 episodes into season 1 and it's really good. Other than some obvious tokenism, it is really well done so far.

I'm hopeful that you will have more faith in Duffey and May a couple months into the season. Both pitchers have electric fastballs and they can control it. Trevor May really took a step forward after that mid-season rough-up when he kept throwing that curveball that wasn't fooling anyone. Take a look at his season trajectory after giving up his fourth curveball home run - a three-run 0-2 shot to Dominic Smith on 7/17. He was lights out, except for a bad day against Chicago, in August and September (34K/6BB). Tyler Duffey has worked to use his pitches more effectively. This is probably the best article that I have read about it. The improvements have made him a real weapon. They both have to come back and do it again in 2020, but I like their chances.

Hey, baby steps. We crossed the threshold of never seeing Hildenberger on lists anymore. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Sano/Polanco/Arraez/Castellanos = Odds on favorite for worst starting infield in MLB 2020

I'm all for any of these bounce back options. Walker, Wood, Sanchez and Nelson all fit the bill. I'd prefer deals with options. Rich Hill is fine too, as long as he isn't the only one. Stash him on the IL. Let him mend. Again, I would want a 2021 option. I do agree with spycake though. I don't think you will get more than Hill and one other of these guys to sign. You may not get the options either. These guys will want to get a lot of opportunity to showcase that they are back and effective. In return, they will probably be willing to take a couple games on the chin with a team like Florida or Detroit. I don't care about the Hill incident. He was just standing up for his wife and has already acknowledged that he was out of line and had an emotional reaction. It would be pretty hard for me to pass judgement on him due to that incident alone. I know I've behaved worse in my lifetime.

I was just using a recent quote to support the idea that Graterol may likely be forced to participate in some type of MLB rotation duty due to the FO's apparent lack of interest in the available FA options. However, I did mention several other player's after naming Graterol, so I could see where that would lead it off track.

... and they want to upgrade the bullpen too https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/white-sox-rumors-bullpen-relievers.html The good news for Sox fans is that the team still hasn’t even topped its previous record payroll, however. There isn’t a name among the best remaining relievers that the ChiSox can’t fit into their budget — and that’s all the more true if owner Jerry Reinsdorf is willing to push spending levels to new heights as he strives to emerge from the long-running rebuild, as one would expect. The White Sox’ offseason moves to date have already made the AL Central race much more interesting, and it seems a few more additions could be on the horizon.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/quick-hits-dombrowski-twins-moore-26th-player.html The Twins have “kicked the tires on the top remaining starters,” as per SKOR North’s Darren Wolfson (Twitter links), and also looked at several other pitchers who have since signed with other clubs, though “never really pursued any aggressively.” Minnesota entered the offseason with a severe need for starting pitching, and while the club has brought back Jake Odorizzi and Michael Pineda, at least one rotation spot must still be addressed. With so many top arms already off the board, Wolfson feels the Twins might need to swing a trade in order to add any further pitching upgrades. In another tweet, Wolfson notes that the Twins didn’t have any interest in left-hander Matt Moore, who is off to Japan after signing with the SoftBank Hawks earlier today. That blurb makes it sound like the likely plan for Graterol and Thorpe/Smeltzer/Dobnak is to get some major work in the rotation, unless a trade can be pulled off. I suppose Jhoan Duran is also a wild card as well. He's on the 40 now, so opportunity is only a phone call and a flight away.
  13. MMMordabito
Sanchez would be a decent high-upside addition, but it has to come with a 2021 option. 2020 could be slow and go after that shoulder surgery. I'd expect some spring IL stints.

954 career OPS (1.084 at Target Field) ... Yes, yes he does.
  15. MMMordabito
That's just great. They get a guy with a career 954 OPS against the Twins. That 30 win advantage is really starting to evaporate.

Probably the most reasonable pair of sentences that I have read on TD today.

Up the offer to Donaldson in the wake of this news. His addition to the offense would make it downright scary. Replacing Schoop and Cron with a full season of Arraez and Donaldson is a massive upgrade, IMO. If Donaldson still signs with the Nats, does a trade pursuit of Josh Bell or Starling Marte make sense? Could Eddie Rosario start donning an infielders glove or first baseman's glove a bit more (yeah, that's thinking out loud)? I don't really want to trade Eddie, because I like him. I still think they need to sign a veteran pitcher to eat some innings, but I'm definitely starting to understand the takes that the Rays way is in the picture. Do Smeltzer or Thorpe comp to someone like Ryan Yarbrough? He pitched 141 innings while only making 14 starts. I'll definitely put myself on the "ignorant" side of not thinking the off-season is a disaster. There is still value out there, and the trade market could still be taking shape. Odorizzi wasn't acquired until well after the holidays. This has been a faster moving market, but it's far from complete.
  18. MMMordabito
Gordon has gone from getting drafted ahead of Aaron Nola to having his fans hoping he is possibly called up to be a backup utility infielder.
  19. MMMordabito
Great article and summary of why we should be excited about this part of the team. I did get a little worried when I saw "Slinging Frisbees" though. I thought it might be a "Pining for Hildenberger" piece.
  20. MMMordabito
OK (throws personal evaluation of carbon footprint in the garbage)
  21. MMMordabito
I like this signing. The depth of quality bullpen arms could be going well into the AAA roster. Anyone with an option out there house left of the batter's eye should be figuring out what they will do with all the frequent flyer miles.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/mlb-players-union-files-grievance-on-behalf-of-jacoby-ellsbury.html I really hope this does not go the Yankees way. I loathe the team and always hope for the worst for them. It's so easy to do when they go sign one guy for $345 million while at the same time trying to screw another player out of $26 million. I also wouldn't be surprised if Scott Boras agreed not to comment on the Ellsbury situation if the Yankees sweetened the deal for Cole. He would typically have something to say in these situations, as much as he runs his mouth. Evil Empire indeed. Brett Gardner being a nice guy with the Altuve's home run ball does zero to make me feel any different.

Hamilton to a minor league deal is interesting, but pass on the rest. The aging, lost-a-step, OBP-challenged Pillar has especially little appeal. I might go so far as to say a full season of Cave PA's and defensive production would outpace Pillar and very likely flirt with Ozuna.
  24. MMMordabito
When using the word "need", I would say Dobnak, Smeltzer and Thorpe as things currently stand.
  25. MMMordabito
With the way things currently stand, we are probably looking at something like 1) Berrios 2) Odorizzi 3) Dobnak 4) Thorpe or Graterol opening for Smeltzer 5) Alcala or Littell opening for Thorpe or Graterol That's F$#%#$ scary. The schedule isn't kind early either. That 5th turn out-gettting gameplan will be needed right out of the shoot. Only 1 off day in the first 14 days. Teheran, Cashner, Bailey or even Nova would look good at least until Pineda gets back. Something's gotta happen. That rotation plus four days of banging sounds in Oakland doesn't exactly scream "Yeah, baseball's back!!"
