  1. I wonder what he thinks of Royce Lewis' swing.
  2. Once again, I said they shouldn't be ignored, but titling an article "Can the Twins Fix Royce Lewis's Swing?" based off of what a bunch of writers said is a bit quick on the trigger.
  3. When these writers (Law, McDaniel, Longenhagen) with no field experience start getting into the mechanical stuff, I have to take a bit of a pause. I'd like to see their credentials on kinesiology and biomechanics before accepting that something needs to be "fixed". I'd like to hear more from coaches or people who actually played the game before getting too worried about a swing issue. I'm not saying they should be ignored, but they aren't delivering The Art of Hitting Redux. If they're writing about plate discipline or something like that, it's easier to assume their expertise. Ball is or isn't in the strike zone, and the players are or aren't swinging at said ball more often than not. That's black and white and can be analyzed by a writer.
  4. I would like to think that he would at least give the Twins a chance, but he may want to be in the spotlight or in a warmer part of the country. I hope there is some common ground. If Falvine can't figure out how to keep a career Twin in a Twins uniform, then maybe we don't have the right guys.
  5. You can, but if I had to choose .... What do you think it would take? More in the Arb years? More in the FA Buyout year? Only one option year?
  6. Which Twins fan doesn't want Jose Berrios wearing our favorite team's uniform for a long time? I'm guessing it's somewhere around Tom Steyer's current polling rate. What would it take to keep him for several years? I tend to look at the Aaron Nola contract, but I'm feeling it will take a little more. Jose isn't stupid. He knows we love him. He also knows his services would be in high demand come FA time. My proposal: 4 years/$49 mill + Option 1 of 2024 @ $20 mill w/ $2 mill buyout + Option 2 of 2025 @ $23 mill w/ $5 mill buyout There could also be bonuses in there for All-Star appearances, Gold Gloves, Cy Youngs and Series MVP awards. 2020: $7 mill 2021: $12 mill 2022: $14 mill 2023: $16 mill 2024: $2 mill/$20 mill 2025: $5 mill/$23 mill So it's really 4/$51 mill with a potential for 6/$92 mill Who says no? Berrios would be sitting right between the current ages of Bumgarner and Ryu at the end of the max, so he would still have a chance for another big deal barring health or downturn. I would honestly rather make a deal like this than sign any of the remaining Free Agents. I know it doesn't move the needle immediately, but it sure as hell keeps the window open longer.
  7. Yep, just start with the Nola deal and then adjust until an agreement is inked. I'd rather overpay a bit on a 25 yo that has a track record with the team anyway. Name - 2020 Age - bWAR last three years Berrios - 26 - 9.1 Bumgarner - 30 - 8.0 Ryu - 33 - 8.5
  8. It will be a Ted S article too. All stats that show anything other than "rose-colored" will be eliminated from said article. Also incoming will be a pipe dream Kris Bryant: Trade Target article.
  9. Sounds like a deal could be in the works for Elieser Hernandez. The Twins hot stove season is saved!!
  10. At least the Yankees were the first team pillaged in the Rule 5 Draft ... That's doesn't help much easing 0-16, but it's something.
  11. Yeah, I should have read that first. I just immediately responded to the "left in the tank" part.
  12. 32 mill a year for someone that "might still have some left in the tank"? No thanks. It would have to be something like the Zack Cozart deal, only way bigger. Their pipeline blows, so they'd probably have to send a couple guys and cover at least 10 mill a year.
  13. It's interesting how the FO has been so right on most of the guys they dropped or left unprotected that were mourned so heavily. A quick glance at the latest production from Chargois, Burdi and Rodriguez backs them up pretty well. Now, if you include MiLB trades, cough, cough .... Nick Anderson ... cough, cough, it doesn't look quite so shiny.
  14. Rockies are extending Oberg. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/rockies-extend-scott-oberg.html Looks like a good blueprint for the Twins doing the same with Taylor Rogers, IMO. Might have to go 3/$15 mill with a $9-10 mill option in 2023, but I'd lock up Lefty Piece, if I could.
  15. There were definitely some Thorpe moments, but Graterol disposing of Rendon and making him look silly doing it in one of those late season Nationals game was my favorite let's-hope-this-young-guy-becomes-all-he-can-be moments.
  16. As far as the Twins go, MLBTR is behaving like that girl at the bar that gives you the doe eyes, allow you to buy her a couple drinks and then quickly runs off with her friends. There's an NSFTD term for it, I believe. Anyway, it's annoying reading the "The Twins are interested in ...." -> Buh-bye and "The Twins are looking at ....." -> Buh-bye.
  17. Great article! I'm as excited about Dobnak as any of the current younger players that debuted this past season or may this next season. Along with a mid-90s fastball and some very nice complementary pitches, he also has a mound presence and pace that makes him fun to watch. With all that said, I'm not sure I agree with the part about not bringing in another back end guy with experience to sweeten the deal for a top end guy. Dobnak surely has some seasoning ahead of him, and then you have the quarter of the season with no Pineda. IL stints will certainly come into play at some point as well. A one year deal or one year with an option on said vet to cover the possibilities that Dobnak busts or Odorizzi walks would probably be the best type of deal. Finding the right pitcher to sign that deal would be where the work needs to and hopefully is being done.
  18. bWar shows that Boyd would be a huge improvement over Gibson or Perez based on last season. I hope that's not all they do, but I would welcome a trade for Boyd and his full set of arb years.
  19. Has anyone else had the naughty thought of hoping Gerrit Cole's career mirrors that of Jacoby Ellsbury from here on out? I am glad he took $324 million of Steinbrenner cash, but I hope his future success is realized off the field. I know I'm a horrible person.
  20. At least these high end pitchers are signing with National League teams that the Twins played last year so far. Cole to the Mets. Ryu to the Braves. Bumgarner to the Marlins. Sounds good to me.
  21. I wonder who we think he is at 9 figures. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/madison-bumgarner-reportedly-asking-for-nine-figure-contract.html
  22. Hearing the Twins are in doesn't do much for me, as I'd assume they should be somewhat in on any starter that projects to earn positive WAR in 2020. I'd consider Ryu a good target though. However, if the Twins do sign Ryu, they need to be looking at having a couple experienced options competing with Smeltzer, Thorpe, Dobnak and Graterol for the 5th and 6th spots. Ryu likely won't make 30 starts. We already know Pineda won't make 30 starts. More darts please.
  23. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/ted-simmons-marvin-miller-elected-to-baseball-hall-of-fame.html Ted Simmons was inducted into the Hall of Fame via the "Modern Era" route. He had a long career with roughly 2000 more PAs than Mauer, but the only places he really bettered Mauer were All-Star appearances and some counting stats. He did have more power (or at least utilized his power more), but his career OPS is about 40 points lower than Mauer. He also never won any Gold Gloves, MVPs or batting titles. Like Mauer, he retired without a World Series ring. Being a Midwest guy, I've heard many calling for Simmons to get the call for awhile. It was usually along with Ron Santo who finally did make it in 2012. It's probably deserved, but I'd group him in there with Harold Baines. If these guys are getting in, Mauer shouldn't have much of a problem.
