  1. Fangraphs mid season for comparison Poppen - Not Ranked in top 46 Wiel - NR Ober - NR Stewart - NR Maciel - 31 (25 in MLB.com preseason, 27 in fangraph preseason)
  2. I don't see Cleveland selling at the deadline. They have stayed within a game of the wild card so far and this is without vintage Kluber, Carrasco, and Clevinger. With Clevenger back and Kluber throwing again they could easily make a run at the wild card or more. Interesting side note, they had a 39-33 record this time last year compared to 39-34 now. Plus look at their schedule leading up to the deadline. Detroit - 7 games Kansas City - 13 games!!! Baltimore - 3 games Toronto - 3 games Cincinnati - 2 games Minnesota - 3 games Houston - 2 games Texas - 1 game 26 games versus really bad teams and just 5 against good teams.
  3. I do like his strategy of screaming profanities at the players that hit homeruns off him.
  4. He has already been taking batting practice since it happened. Baldelli called him 90% and said Buxton wanted to play through it. Seems like this FO doesn't take unnecessary risks and would rather see him at 100%. Can't be too serious and pretty low on the worrisome meter.
  5. Luis Castillo should not be available. The Reds have made it clear that the rebuild era is ending. They should be trying to compete again in 2020 and Castillo will be a part of that.
  6. He has been successful in past postseasons but his last postseason was 2016. That was before this slow decline had begun. I would not be comfortable saying he will replicate that same postseason success this season. 2016 2.74 ERA, 3.24 FIP, 3.54 xFIP, 3.36 SIERA 2017 3.32 ERA, 3.95 FIP, 4.07 xFIP, 3.94 SIERA 2018 3.26 ERA, 3.99 FIP, 4.32 xFIP, 4.42 SIERA 2019 3.87 ERA, 3.98 FIP, 4.08 xFIP, 4.09 SIERA
  7. 2018-2019 BABIP of .286 and 19 homerun in 378 PA 5.02% 2017 BABIP of .375 and 28 homerun in 483 PA 5.08% I can see his BABIP increasing over time which was my original point but I don't think homeruns are causing the 75 point decrease on his career BABIP. BABIP isn't a perfect vacuum to measure but if he can continue to hit the ball hard his BABIP and average should pick up a bit. His sample size is small enough to make this kind of a silly discussion but 2 less homeruns would make his rate really close but less than 2017, if both those homeruns instead fell for hits he would be about .320 BABIP. A "normal" homerun rate still wouldn't have him at career levels. Look at Joey Gallo, career highs in homerun rate, hard hit%, and BABIP
  8. Its not like he found his homerun stroke this year compared to 2015-2017 when he posted great BABIP numbers. For someone who consistently makes hard contact he should see a higher BABIP. His homerun totals shouldn't explain his decrease in BABIP. His homerun to flyball rate is pretty much what it was in 2017 but his BABIP is 100 points lower.
  9. Sano's BABIP might explain some of his low batting average. His batted ball stats are pretty consistent over his career. His hard hit% is 13th highest for players with 60+ PA but his BABIP is 5th lowest of the top 30 Hard Hit% leaders. No reason his BABIP can't be around .350 with what he is doing now, a little boost in BA might be coming. 2015 .396 2016 .329 2017 .375 2018 .286 2019 .286 Career .345
  10. Not sure wrist strength is his problem with check swings (I bet he has more wrist strength than most players on the team). Improving his pitch recognition would help so he can see the breaking pitches earlier.
  11. Puig strikes me as one of those guys that isn't playing his hardest unless he wants to. Like this year when he played his old rival San Francisco, he was trash talking their players and saying how much he loves getting booed by their fans. He went 10 for 22 against them. He hasn't seemed very fired up the rest of the season. He would also get into these ruts with LA until he started losing playing time and it would seem to light a fire in him.
  12. I like Stroman too, a little bit of an injury history but I'm on board. Toronto is in an interesting position though with that extra year of control. They have hardly any financial commitments and the clock is started on Vlad Jr. Would they already be looking at 2020 to make some noise with Vlad Jr and possibly Bo Bichette? 2021 is probably more realistic but they might have something to think about.
  13. They are very likely to move him but it sounds like its going to take a big overpay to get him. It is telling that even the Yankees with a clear need for starting pitching "might not be enamored enough with him to pay the necessary price" according to MLB.com. The Giants are saying that they aren't going to settle for an offer they don't like. They don't absolutely have to move him either. Easy Qualifying Offer candidate, could re-sign him too since he is "their guy". San Fran has needed a large scale rebuild for a few years now and they have been dead set on buying their way out of it, re-signing him isn't that far-fetched. Maybe the new GM will operate differently or maybe its the owners that keep saying fix the team we have.
  14. The Diamondbacks have the 3rd best run differential in the NL. Plus no team in MLB has played more games against teams above .500 than them. A wild card seems well within their sights especially if their schedule evens out. I think they need to go for it unless things change drastically.
  15. Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic on Bumgarner's asking price. “From what industry sources are telling me, Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi already has had a dialogue with some contenders, including the New York Yankees, and he made it clear the Giants will not treat Bumgarner as a yard-sale item that must be cleared off the driveway before moving day,” Baggarly writes. “The Giants will get the value they are seeking or they won’t move him.”
  16. The biggest disappointment for the Twins so far this year has been an advertisement on the radio broadcasts. The one about Twins tickets. The one about Twins tickets. The one about Twins tickets.
  17. The 5th place Reds record of 29-35 is respectable considering their recent history and the run differential of +33 suggests it should be better but the Dodger trade is looking pretty bad for them so far. Combined WAR of the 4 players is -0.7 for what was clearly a win-now move. Yasiel Puig .207/.252/.378 (.630OPS) -0.2 WAR. Free Agent at end of year Matt Kemp .200/.210/.283 (.493OPS) -0.9 WAR. Released and signed by Mets Kyle Farmer .221/.265/.455 (.720OPS) 0.4 WAR Controlled thru 2024 Alex Wood - has not played. Free Agent at seasons end Its looking like the Reds traded 2 good prospects (ranked 7th and 17th in LAD top prospects) for a controllable backup catcher. Smooth sailing for the Dodgers so far in 2019 as well, they don't miss anyone from this and added to their always good farm system.
  18. Pressly was pretty good at times with the Twins but not in the same ballpark as he has been at all times with Houston. Pressly himself credits Houston with unlocking his potential. Its a night and day difference. Hopefully the Twins analytics gets there and this case seems to have amplified our efforts to catch up to these teams. The newest Astro was open to input. With the Twins, he had wondered, “Why is it not clicking for me?” Now someone was offering answers. And it wasn’t just anyone; it was the Astros, who had won the World Series the year before and had a history of acquiring and improving much more accomplished pitchers, including former Tigers ace Justin Verlander, the best AL pitcher of his era. “I was just curious to see if this works. … It’s like, maybe I should pay attention over here,” Pressly says.
  19. Houston made Pressly into the elite pitcher he is now. He would not be performing at this level if he was still with us. His track record with us 2016 3.70 ERA 3.74 FIP 2017 4.70 ERA 4.36 FIP 2018 3.40 ERA 2.95 FIP with Houston 2018 0.70 ERA 1.49 FIP 2019 0.93 ERA 2.25 FIP No more than fifteen minutes after he finished unpacking in the clubhouse, Pressly was summoned into a meeting. In attendance were Astros pitching coach Brent Strom, bullpen coach Doug White, and multiple analysts from the front office. The Astros, Pressly learned, had a plan for him to be better, and the analysts launched into the details. “They sat me down and they put up all these x, y charts and all this other stuff,” Pressly says. “It almost sounded like they were speaking in a different language. https://www.theringer.com/mlb/2019/6/3/18644512/mvp-machine-how-houston-astros-became-great-scouting
  20. Plus Pressley's general track record at the time of the trade wasn't very close to Giles. Pressley is on a different level now than he ever was with the Twins. It was known he had high spin rates but he was inconsistent and didn't start striking people out until 2018. Giles has been mostly dominate his entire career.
  21. Not even a mention of the injury that ended his all star season. He is still recovering from the fallout of that metal rod in his leg and the long inactive recovery period. Not a mention of the injury that cost him the beginning of this season. Then the blog brushes aside his strong season line of .250/.348/.625 as if it is only decent and he is in decline. His stat line is currently better than his career line and his all star 2017 season. I guess some people just want to write him off. He is performing extremely well and I don't think we have seen his best yet.
  22. E-Town is going for their 30th consecutive winning season this year. (If the Bio on their website is up to date)
  23. SS is a loaded position lately. Machado's fWAR of 1.1 ranks 17th among Shortstops. His OPS ranks 16th among qualified SS. More teams have a statistically better shortstop than Manny than do not.
  24. Seems like you could get a great fielding but average bat without spending 300M.
  25. Interesting on June 5th 2018 Philly was 32-26. June 5th this year 34-27.......What a difference! Washington has been a top 10 run scoring offense since activating star player Trea Turner and is gaining in the standings 8-2 in last 10 games.
