  1. Haven't updated lately. This shows why no Twins fan should give up on hopes of qualifying for the postseason. AL East: +60 NL East: +21 NL West: +7 NL Central: -12 AL West: -15 AL Central: -61
  2. I strongly believe that he IS busting it down the line as fast as he can but is being slowed considerably by the PF.
  3. Maybe, maybe not. We won't know until the contract is up.
  4. The Twins are my team, have been since I can remember (and I can remember at least a little of 1961), and always will be. I think the most difficult year was 1982. I was in Ohio for school and the Twins were an important part of my identity as a Minnesotan. That summer was a rough one to be a Twins fan.
  5. You want to have reserve players as ready as possible when they are needed. Generally that won't happen if they don't get an AB at least a few times a week. All players need days off from time to time, especially catchers. It's just a question of how often. If it's 7 or 10 AB's I generally concur. But some players do particularly well or particularly poorly against certain pitchers or certain types of pitchers. AFAIK no two stadiums have exactly the same outfield dimensions. For example, when you're playing in the Bronx it's good to have left-handed pull hitters in the lineup, especially those who tend to hit fly balls. When you're on the north side of Chicago pay attention to the wind. If it is blowing out, fly ball hitters are good. If it's blowing in, not so much. Is there an advantage to having a set order game in and game out? Maybe. But to me, it would be foolish not to take these factors into account when setting a batting order. And thanks for having this discussion.
  6. Regarding batting order, there are many things that vary from game to game, not the least of which is the opposing starting pitcher. Is he right handed or left? Do any players have a history of success or failure against him? Which players are hot and which are not? Who needs a rest? Who needs to get some AB's? Does the stadium favor any particular players? Does the weather favor any particular players? And I'm sure there are more factors that I'm leaving out. A manager's goal is to get the most out of his players and in order to do that the batting order should change from game to game.
  7. I don't think it's the front office. And I don't think it's Baldelli. I think it's the players themselves, Correa and Buxton in particular. They are significantly underperforming relative to what almost everyone expected. And by almost everyone I'm referring to almost all knowledgeable baseball people. I think it's safe to say that if those two and Polanco were hitting like people expected we would have a nice cushion in the division. I don't know why this problem is happening but that's the problem.
  8. This reminds me of a trivia question that can stump a lot of people: name the man who played for the New York Yankees, the New York Knicks, and the New York Rangers? (In the same season.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Layton
  9. I think it goes back to one of the things Tom Kelly is known for saying: put your players in situations where they can succeed. In Pagan's case, it's lower leverage situations. Avoid late and close. He usually does OK as the earliest reliever. Try to limit him to that. We can quibble about verbiage, but while this role isn't necessarily an important one, it's still necessary to have a pitcher who can succeed in that role so that the high leverage guys can be available when needed. I think about LaTroy Hawkins. The Twins knew he could be a good major league pitcher, and they first tried to use him as a starter. That didn't work. Then they tried him as a closer. That didn't work. Then they tried him in other roles in the bullpen. He succeeded. When he went to the Cubs after leaving the Twins they tried him as a closer. Again, that didn't work. But once he was put in situations where he could succeed he wound up having a really good career. I'm not saying Pagan can be the next LaTroy Hawkins. But with the pitches that he has he should be able to fill a role in a major league bullpen if he is used properly.
  10. I'm at home, and I'm sure I have better things to do, too.
  11. At this point in the season, about the same.
  12. Dick: "Are you kidding me?" Everybody else: "No."
  13. Jinxed. On the first pitch. Will we never learn?
  14. I think this plan IS a success story. It has long been thought by many baseball people that there are almost always enough good relievers available to construct an effective bullpen on a year by year basis. The key, obviously, is identifying and signing the right guys.
  15. That looked ominous as hell. I fear TJ #2 is in his future.
  16. I was going to try to make a joke regarding her husband, Mister Olemnis, but I decided it wouldn't be very funny.
  17. If your team has a big lead or a big deficit WPA underweights good performances and bad performances, especially late in a game.
  18. I'm sure he's on the Twins' radar, as are all pitchers who play for teams that will be likely to sell at or before the deadline. I think any reliable bullpen arm would be welcome.
  19. This will never happen, but this piece reminds me of something Reusse proposed a number of years ago: a "baseball only night" promotion. The scoreboard would show only the line score, the count, and scores of other games. The only sounds coming over the PA system would be announcements directly relating to the game (lineups, batters, pitchers and so forth) and the organ. No kiss cam, no mascot race, no TC, none of that folderol. I would attend.
  20. Winnah! Let's put an extended streak together now. We fans deserve it.
