  1. I once had a job with the circus as a human cannonball. One day at work I got loaded and they fired me.
  2. What would also be good is merit-based money.
  3. It has been probably more than 50 years since the ASG rosters were made up of the best players. I advocate for a formula akin to WAR or WPA to select the players. IMHO it should be weighted slightly (and only slightly) in favor of performance during the current season because players who are currently playing well deserve recognition, but it should also incorporate the previous two or so seasons to minimize the effects of slumps or periods of overachievement. No fan voting, no player voting, no coach/manager voting, no media voting.
  4. None of what you said, reasonable though it may seem, justifies using anything other than straight electronic pitch calling.
  5. What the Cardinals are saying is, "Make us an offer and we'll consider the ones that overpay the most." I don't think we are in a position to make overpaying worthwhile. I think Texas is the most likely to do that, maybe Atlanta or Toronto also.
  6. Sometimes a slump is just a slump, even when it's a severe one. If the team's medical staff felt that rest would improve his physical fitness then he would have been placed on the IL weeks ago. I think this one is up to the team's coaches and manager (and Buxton himself) to solve. But in the meantime we just can't have a batter slumping this badly in the lineup every night, especially in the heart of the batting order.
  7. Highlighting this just for emphasis. Trade any player at any time if the trade improves the state of the franchise. Period. And regarding the 1987 Twins, I also wish people wouldn't use that example. In today's American League (including Tampa Bay and its stellar record) and today's postseason format the Twins would have been the 3rd Wild Card team, seeded 6th. In 1987 they got through two 7-game series with two quality starters and good luck (like Terry Pendleton barely able to play for St. Louis, for example). That's not going to happen ever again.
  8. In the challenge system the electronic call overrides the umpire's call. So why incorporate the delay and bother of a challenge? That's just plain silly. Simply use the electronic call in the first place.
  9. Nitpick: I think GB stands for Games Behind. Shouldn't this be 2.5 GA (Games Ahead)?
  10. I'm happy and relieved about the sweep, but it's nothing compared to the disappointment I'd feel if we hadn't swept.
  11. All right! There's the first of the four that we need. Let's get it going.
  12. Interesting viewpoint with a lot of merit. This would probably distance them even further from the rest of the AL, both in the regular season and the postseason. The only question is whether they have the cojones to pull the trigger.
  13. Regarding Jax: yes, it's very tempting to want him to pitch longer in his appearances based on his current run of success, but be careful not to kill the goose that lays golden eggs. And, just as important if not more so, I think we probably need to start using Duran the same way. One inning tops, max effort, then done. Don't tempt fate.
  14. It's very common to misapply statistics. There's a big difference between saying that there will be at least one MLB pitcher who won't pitch next year and saying that one specific very good MLB pitcher won't pitch next year. The former happens 100% of the time and the latter almost never happens.
  15. OK, a bit of good luck to end that inning. Our batters need to step up, and big time.
  16. Who is Arreaz? There's no MLB player with that name.
  17. Maybe it's a band covering a Pablo Cruise cover band.
