  1. Hope this is sarcasm. He's a been a beauty both this year and years prior.
  2. For sure, I'm with you, that would have been my move too. Just the same, the decision to bring him out for the 7th was a good one as well.
  3. I was at a couple games last week and he had a few balls hit to him where I was thinking to myself, we have to catch that ball as an MLB outfielder that he let drop in, or some others I though to myself he made that harder than it had to be. That said, definitely not a butcher out there. He makes the plays he is supposed to make, but isn't going to give you plus defense IMO.
  4. I'm fine now going either way. What you don't want is to have to get more than 7-8 outs. When the Twins get into trouble is when they are asking their depleted BP for 9-12 outs. They are setup now to use 3 guys if they have to, to get the final 6 outs.
  5. Boom. No need to waste bullpen bullets when your starter only had as many pitches as he has and given up nothing. Sonny has actually pitched into the 7th in 4 of his last 6 starts, and the other 2, he went 6 full. He is the MVP of this pitching staff this year IMO.
  6. 60 pitches. Don't give Rocco any ideas. He's got it and another.
  7. Trying to crush every ball. Looking for that HR or double every. single. time. Just give us good contact off the barrel of the bat Carlos.
  8. At this point it looks like that would have been the correct move. Held him out until he was ready, then used him at CF and DH while having Taylor get at least half the starts in CF. Maybe starting him later in the season would be preferable at this point no matter how he looks at the start of the season. Let's have his best from July-October.
  9. Then why is he there? DFA and select someone else to the 40-man and give someone a chance. He sits there and collects dust, chews sunflower seeds and possibly conversates with the others but is of not much use to the BP other than that, unless we are losing a game by 6 runs. I'm also fine with brining Varland up and sending one of these other pitchers with options down. Use him as a swingman, this seems like common sense right now.
  10. This is 100% a problem. But rather than beat your head into the wall, maybe your manager has to adjust(I think he has some) but in the playoffs to rely on your strength(starters), more than your weakness(bullpen). Even if this "gasp" means letting a starter go 6 or 7 in a playoff game!
  11. You're right on. His post sounds crazy to me. We get fleeced last season and basically nothing to show for it and this year, yes they didn't do much but we also didn't give up someone like Austin Martin, etc to try and find lightning in the bottle or gamble on another injured guy with lots of upside. Where I think the Twins are rippable with their bullpen this year is their inability to address anything in it prior to the season starting and then being unwilling to give up on guys like Sands, Gallo, etc in order to try someone new from AAA. Or being flexible or trying something new. Varland might be effective in the pen or move him into the rotation, Maeda in the pen, etc. Try something different. Games in which we only get 5 from our starters are mainly losses as we only have a few truly "trustable" BP arms.
  12. Agree on Correa but still think his play at SS is fantastic and not terrible with the bat. Hate the way his approach has been lately though, swinging for the fences and trying to pull everything, he has been an easy out lately. Buxton, at this point, it might be worth it to have him not play at all until June. Try to have him healthy for the 2nd half and IN CF the entire time he is available. I don't know, this sounds crazy, but nothing they have tried has worked with him, he is basically a china doll.
  13. I'm not sad they didn't mortgage the future for some relief help. My frustration is that they didn't address it at all at the beginning of the season. They also have arms in AAA that could help but refuse to part ways with guys like Sands, Gallo, etc.
  14. I would rather he give it up than burn up your whole bullpen and still lose. He breezed through his last inning of work 1-2-3 with 2K's FYI. I honestly would love to see the stats I asked about. Surprised Rocco's IPAD doesn't show him.
  15. We flat out DONT WIN games when he pulls the starter in or right after the 5th. Someone please look up numbers, but I would LOVE to see how many times we've had a lead in the 5th the last 2 years, pulled the starter and still won. I bet it's less than 30%, probably much less.
  16. I'm with you bring up Martin. I still give MAT plenty of starts though. I just feel like he is a solid player. That said, ride the hot hand. Use it up until he loses it. Give him a taste of a pennant race. If he has to go back down so be it. For me the DFA would be Sands or any number of other losers from the bullpen. Then if Martin cools or doesn't produce, we just option him and call back up whichever pitcher on the 40 man is doing anything decent at all.
  17. Yes, as a function of a whole season, analytics, 100% helps win games. On a game by game basis though, SOME instinct and baseball sense is also needed to close the deal on wins. Finding the middle ground is what I would like to see more of. That and building better bullpens. They have not really been addressed in the offseason ever for this FO and it has hurt us now a couple years in a row. HAMMER BULLPENS WIN GAMES.
  18. Rosters with better payroll, pitching staffs like this one has and not as many holes in the lineup(Jason Tyner DH anyone), Gardy would have won more than he did. They ALWAYS had good bullpens. Don't care what folks say, old Terry could build bullpens and I didn't like the guy very much. Here you have a real contrast, both TR and Gardy were "baseball guys" and didn't use analytics much at all, while the couple we have now, are computer, analytics, spreadsheet guys and don't rely on gut/feel very much at all. Both have had about the same success when it comes down to it.
  19. Hitting, obviously has hurt this team. More than anything IMO. Bullpen, has hurt this team, alot. Both of those show up in the stats you've shown. I would argue also that when the bullpen stats are as bad as they are, and starter's stats as good as they are, decisions like Rocco made last night SPIT in the face of what this team really is, whether there is some advanced stat that says he should pull them etc. I will give him some credit. For the most part, he has let his starters go deeper into game this year. But there are still too many times when he tries to get 4 innings out of them, when they are good for 2 possibly 3 that day. THAT loses us games also and should be taken into acccount.
  20. Some would argue this roster is built for October. The pitching staff certainly is. 1 more stud relief pitcher and another right handed bat for next year could be added, but this pitching staff(at least the starters) is playoff ready.
  21. I agree with you in the sense that they may have to make room for younger players in the infield. I am NOT interested most likely in an extention for Jorge, but that option year next year might be hard to pass up, especially if he is healthy. Worse case the Twins bomb next year and he can be moved for possible prospects if he indeed produces himself next season.
  22. Their approach at the plate this season IMO, has cost them a few wins. Or maybe it hasn't when we average it out, that would be something over my head or at least not something I want to look up. Either way it is obvious the approach is to hit a few balls really hard for XBH or HRS rather than keep the line moving, swing for contact with 2 strikes and/or runners on, etc. All the strikeouts and huge swings game after game isn't as fun to watch though, that is for sure.
  23. I didn't watch any of the Saturday game but was there at TF yesterday. He looked really good in the 9th, like he had it all back. Also, he changed speeds more I thought. Saw more of the 88-87 mph stuff. Seemed to help him.
  24. During the playoffs, IMO Vasquez rides the pine. I'm sure he will get a start here or there, but in a series that goes 5 games, I want Jeffers catching for 4 of them. We will see what Rocco does then. I agree, the younger guy outperforming, he should get 60% of the starts. Even Vasquez should see what is going on here, Jeffers is turning into a solid ML catcher or at the very least he is hot and having a great year. Ride the hot hand. PS I'm fine with some 1B starts(especially over GALLO!) also if that's what it takes to keep his bat in the lineup.
  25. Guys are figuring him out some. Advanced scouting, etc. The know not to offer at his offspeed stuff if they can help it and try to be on time with the gas. If he is missing or behind in counts, like he has been lately, a ball down the middle if a hitter is sitting on it can be hit and has been. He needs to adjust and get his command back. Some rest would be fine, but let's get a few games we don't need our studs to throw in. Let Cole Sands or whoever eat up some innings up 4-5 runs.
