  1. This is such BS it's not funny. I hate this argument, absolutely hate it. Yes, if the offers are the same, then players will pick where they want to go. However, when you are in the position the Twins are, you have to identify EXACTLY who you want and blow them out of the water with a deal. Madbum gets 4/85? Offer him 5/110. He won't turn it down, I will promise you that. It cannot be done all the time. But doing so when you are in this position is more than acceptable. You are paying a guy 4 or 5 years for basically the performance they will give you in year 1 or 2. Don't like doing that? Fine, draft and develop pitching that is able to fill that role. Or "gasp" trade some of the zillion positional player prospects you have in order to balance out your organization. Having piles of good position players doesn't do you any good if you have no pitching to go along with it.
  2. Not against it, but I would see this as kind of a "meh? move. A #3-4 starter candidate. If he is signed, plus another move is made, I would be happy. I still think it's imperative to get a starter that profiles as better than Odorizzi and can be slotted in behind Berrios if the Twins want to have a true chance at competing. Probably gonna have to come in trade or an overapay for RYU and hope he stays healthy.
  3. I would feel the exact opposite here. Berrios for the first half of the year was that ACE. He was great, one of the game's best. All he has to figure out is how to sustain it for a full season. He has been tabbed as one heck of a hard worker also, I think between he and the Twins training staff, they can figure this out. Buxton hasn't done anything yet at the plate. He's a great defender, but a China doll when it comes to being durable. I don't put a ton of faith in him. That said, if he does ever hit his potential, watch out.
  4. Honestly, they should have taken the chance last year. They should have said OK Mets, fine, you can have 1 of Lewis, Kiriloff, or Buxton. Now pick a guy in our 5-10 prospect range. That trade would have been accepted almost assuredly. I am not sure why our FO is afraid to do something like this to get in a pitcher of that caliber.
  5. I wouldn't go that far. Trade deadline 2018 they made a lot of trades. Most of those guys are fairly highly ranked in our farm system. Those could turn out to be fine or even great trades. We won't know for another year or two. One thing I will give them credit for it look like(assuming 2018 would be the norm), that when they have an asset they know they won't retain, they are way more willing than Terry Ryan was to dump them and get what they can.
  6. Won't get that out of him. Only will get what we "wont" or "can't" do. As has been said zillions of times on here before, Twins have a pitching problem. There are 2 ways to correct it if you want it to happen quickly, sign or trade. So far it looks as if the FO wants to do neither. Or at least neither involving high end guys. This is a problem if you think we can compete, truly compete next season or the year after. It's my opinion this FO is perfectly happy waiting on their own prospects to develop in order to fill out this pitching staff. In fact, I would bet you see them trade someone away for more pitching prospects before you see them give up prospects for someone that is producing right now.
  7. Exactly, trading him now you aren't going to get a ton. Have him play a full season and OPS .900 or so with 40 bombs and all of a sudden he's worth a pile.
  8. I like keeping this guy around because of his attitude alone. He knows what it takes to win. His performance? He does well, but not a guy I want in the 8th or 9th most times. That said, his slider is still really tough to square up. Either way, he's worth a roster spot and I could care less that the Twins might have had to give up some money for them. They have cheaped out enough. Pay the man
  9. Doesn't really matter folks. Twins are thinking the same things we are. The only difference is, they are unwilling to pay the "stupidity tax" that has been talked about here. My guess, Twins offer 3 years/55 mill. He will probably sign for 4/75 or so. That is my guess, take it with a grain of salt. This whole process should have taught us something by now. This group will NOT overpay for someone, they need to get value or they are not about it.
  10. This kind of post should make your front office happy. Trade one of our cornerstones for prospects and lottery tickets to build for the future. You also said they could then get someone cheaper to play 1B. How fun. Keep kicking the can down the road, it's a certaintly this Lewis kid is the next coming of A-rod. They trade Sano, it better have an ACE attached to the other side. Otherwise Target field will probably be burnt down.
  11. If this is true, why aren't the Twins working their tails off to get him signed longer term? Why, after making him the QO, didn't they work on getting him locked in for 3-4 more years? If he is truly that kind of pitcher and they were willing to go 5/100 with one of them, then why aren't they looking long term with Jake?
  12. I agree. Plus you have to factor in the rest of what he is dealing with in this organization. You think he doesn't see whats going on here? Competitive guys are not going to want to stay here when the management structure doesn't feel they have to compete. Santana flew the coup as quick as he could once he figured out the real value he had. This is the same situation IMO.
  13. Better look again. Every FA they've been rumored to be after for the last 3 years has been this. They also haven't signed anyone to a deal longer than 2 years since Falvine took over. I'd say there's plenty of evidence.
  14. Then why IN on him? Why try? Why worry about it? Shouldn't have even said they wanted him if he's that bad. So, going 4 was A OK, but going out to 5 is a disaster? If he is declining and our FO and analytics team feel as though he isn't worth having around, then there shouldn't be any reports that the Twins want him. That we are "IN" on him. That we are one of a handful of top suitors. Just say you are "OUT" and that you will look to other avenues to fill your pitching staff.
  15. Do you think a high end pitcher is willing to take a discount deal to stay with a team that isn't willing to go all in and surround him with what it takes to be a champion? Berrios once he gets to free agency if he continues the path he is on will far eclipse the kind of money Bumgarner just got paid here.
  16. If it was so "dumb" then why the reports they are going after him hard, Twins among top 2 suitors, etc? Either they LIE or you are wrong. They wanted him. Don't act as if they didn't. They however wanted a DEAL like they do with everything they do. We all know Madbum would likely not be any good in year 4 and 5 of that contract. WHO CARES we are paying for year 1 and 2 a guy to pair with Berrios in a playoff matchup.
  17. Either way, it probably doesn't matter. If this is what is being reported, that means one of the teams balked at an offer. To me, anything better than a bucket of kentucky fried chicken is a good return for Jake Cave. I'm certain Miami wanted something else in the deal.
  18. Then they must develop their own. If they can't develop their own, they must trade position players for them. You have to do one of those things or you won't compete for anything more than wild card spot or division crown. Once you get the playoffs, you get STOMPED. The core is there. It needs to be supplemented. Doesn't matter how it happens, but since there has been an organization failure to produce top pitching the last how many years, it must be righted for this group of players in order to compete. If it isn't done, it's a hardcore slap in the face to the roster.
  19. You didn't watch last year, did you. Nothing says they can't, other than they didn't last year. They both had their chances and the Yankees toyed with them until they had to give in. Once they did and started grooving pitches, they were in trouble. Hope and prayer gets old.
  20. Then what, exactly is your plan to make this club competitive now? Are you willing to PUNT on this core because they don't have pitching? Do you think it's best to wait around and waste these guys while we wait for our pitching prospects to develop? I understand where you are coming from with the examples you give. I'm not all for signing big name guys when they are older for big money. But what exactly do you propose they do in order to help this team now and the next 1-3 years? I mean, they could trade for top of the rotation pitching, but we all know that will require Lewis or Graterol or both. Twins have never shown the want to move these types of prospects. Basically, they really have never taken a chance. It's always been safe play, focusing on getting in the "mix" with no real eye on actually going for it. The way this team is set up. It is time to spend big either with your dollar bills, or with your prospects. We are all waiting for them to take some risk. My gut tells me though that whether it is Pohlad or the FO, they don't have the guts to actually go for it.
  21. Puke to all of them. If you are going to sign retreads and bargain basement guys, I would rather they just give the job to one of the younger guys in our system that has earned it. No need to waste money on this type of signing when you will get the same production from your system at the league minimum.
  22. Just a waste of time IMO for the Twins to even be worried about trades like this right now. Go after these guys after the dust has setttled. Of course, maybe they were just blown away that someone would even want Jake Cave. Maybe that is the reason for them to even have this discussion. Either way, this kind of low end move is typical and something I feel will have little to no impact to the team. They should be using their time to pull out all the stops to get who they want in Free Agency, or to trade for guys that are actually worth something. This guy here is another #5 starter type.
  23. If we have not signed him and or any of the guys left that are worth a snort by now, it is surely because they are out fishing for higher money deals from the bigger clubs. I will go ahead and act as if I know something like half our Twins covered media does and tell you my sources say the Twins are "OUT" on Madbum, Ryu, Donaldson, and Keuchel.
  24. I doubt we get either and I don't really care. Both are old. Both will take 4 years to get deals. Both are injury prone. I've resigned myself that this club just isn't gonna sign any top end Free Agents. I think it's time they pivot over and realize you are gonna have to dump 2-4 of your top 10 prospects to build this club. Their cheap attitude and thirst to "win" every transaction they make has backed them into a corner. It is either send out your honey prospects, or roll with the same team as last year at this point. No amount of low end free agents, pickup of projects, or signing guys getting into the twilight of their career can help them at this point. It is looking to me like there is only one way to improve this club, and that is by letting go of some young guys.
  25. Well then that just strengthens my point. And my hope, is that the change in developing these guys is what bears fruit. We all know in the long run the way to sustain competitiveness is to develop your own guys, specifically pitching. The last FO didn't produce a ton of pitchers, or at least not many high end guys. Hopefully these guys can bring the best out in the pitchers they draft and develop.
