  1. It's not their "engagement". It is the writers who tweet this stuff that make the rumors. Just once, I would like to see the TC media ask the Twins owners and FO some tough questions. Make them squirm a little bit. The mouthpiece apologetic tone in which they are handled is patronizing to life long fans.
  2. Almost every playoff game your pitching doesn't have much wiggle room. It is nip and tuck all through October. I agree, their bats weren't great, but the pitching just flat out wasn't competitive save for a handful of innings from Berrios and Ordorizi. Even in their starts, there was this feel that the Yankees were just waiting for them to make mistakes and pounce. Eventually it happened when they couldn't execute "pitchers" pitches and had to groove.
  3. This article is good. However, it misses on the fact that this FO didn't have a ton to do with the players that are now on the MLB roster. Like him or love him Terry Ryan's crew was the one who drafted and developed most of our starting lineup. We have yet to see how Falvine's drafts play out. Will Lewis be a league leading SS? Can Graterol by a top end starter? How about Kiriloff? Is he Jason Kubel, or something more. Remember, Buxton, Sano, Berrios, Polanco, Rosario, Kepler, Aareaz, Rogers, Garver. It's not fair to give this FO credit for these guys, the guys that are making it happen. Heck Billy Smith made some excellent international signings. The book is still out IMO on these guys as far as drafting and acquiring players goes. Also, as far as player acquisition and trading goes, what exactly has this new FO done any different than ones in the past? They are still not going after the top guys, playing the reclamation project game, signing older players to 1-2 year deals, not trading valuable prospects for high end guys, and using their system to supplement. I don't see anything different on this front from Terry Ryan. What is different is the approach to player improvement, analytics, etc. That has been MUCH, MUCH better and the reason we can put our trust in these guys going forward. They should most definitely get credit for helping what was already there perform to their highest abilities, or should at least get credit for hiring the coaches that were able to accomplish that.
  4. I'm also fine with however they want to get a contending rotation for the upcoming season. If they would rather use some of their prospect capital or some of their offense to upgrade the pitching staff, I am all for it. I would get to it though before all of these FA are signed. Once they are, other teams will also pivot to the trade route, once they do, it will cost more to pry players from teams with the right assets.
  5. This was in reference to an earlier part of the discussion that talked about trading for him years ago. I know we were not getting Cole or Stras. I did think the next tier was or is attainable though.
  6. AGREE!! Years and years of not adding, not going for it, cheaping out + the weather is hard to shake.
  7. Also would be interested going after Snell or Sale. To me, the rest are not worth any of our top prospects. That said, if they can be had for less(guys outside our top 4-5), then go for it.
  8. That's just it. There isn't alot out there as far as trade targets go IMO. Their best chance was last year with Syndergaard. I would go down that road again if I am the Twins. No, you can't have Buxton and Lewis/Kiriloff. But, yes, you can have one of them and a guy from 4-10 from our prospect list. That is a good offer for him that they would have to seriously consider.
  9. Right, it is only December. That said, you have Madbum who is likely out of it for us with other teams jumping in. Ryu, who is an injury risk and the trade route. Who out there in a trade profiles as better than those 2? Also, teams will ask for our top prospects for controllable pitching that would be considered "impact". Are the Twins willing to move them? We haven't seen it in the past. In fact, this last trade deadline was a very good example of how I expect this FO to move forward on the trade front.
  10. This as a philosophy is just fine, and actually what most here realize is the case. We also realize that, as you say, we must get more per dollar than larger market teams do. That said, you can't be 100% rigid with any philosophy and expect to win the big one. Twins are in dire need of starting pitching right now. They are not really in need of position players as a whole. They have lots of money available to use, and lots of high end prospects as capital. Does it not make sense to utilize all the capital you have in order to produce the best team you can? Or can winning only happen here when you stick to the "value" philosopy of roster construction. My argument is that it takes both. It does no good to carry that money with you, nor does it do any good to carry prospects in areas where you already have young guys manning their positions. By spending what you can, and using your prospect capital, my opinion is then and only then are you actually maximizing the potential of those assets.
  11. No, not same old stuff. 101 wins or more. Heading into a matchup with the Yankees. Cole throws a 3 hit shutout backed up by a 1-2-3 Rogers 9th. Twins up 1-0 and now they turn to Jose Berrios for their next start. That is NOT the same old thing. Twins come home either 1-1 or 2-0 and they turn to Ordorizi who gives them a solid 5 with 2 runs. Oh shoot, we lose that game. Thats fine, time to turn to Gerrit Cole again.
  12. OK, they are signed. Time to make that offer. I don't see them bidding him up. I see him signing for 5/110. Twins will offer 5/100 or 5/90. They have to realize their only leverage is offering more money. 5/120 and he's a Twin right now without question.
  13. False. The weather sucks there too. That is what people are talking about all the time right? More crime? Highest murder rate in the nation? What exactly is so much better about Chicago?
  14. I don't think anyone thought we would get Cole. My hope was that he would go National league. 90% of Twins fans want or wanted Wheeler or Bumgarner with a possible #4 type guy added in as well. No one is asking for the moon. We are all asking for a little faith and for the FO to take a chance. At this point, they either blow someone out of the water cashwise with an offer, or they get completely out and start working trades.
  15. Who would want to live in Houston? Hot as hell, dirty town, nothing much to do. They get guys. It is just as big of a hinderance to play in sweltering heat as it is to have to show your face some when its cold. PS Chicago is almost the same temp-wise as Minneapolis. The Cubs never have problems getting Free Agents to sign. Wonder why that is? Can anyone figure it out?
  16. I don't see anything mentioned about money in that tweet. If the market for Madbum is 5/100, Twins have to offer 5/120. That's just the way it is and the only way it will get done.
  17. Yes. And this also takes the Twins out of the running for Madbum most likely. They waited too long.
  18. Oh come on with this. We have been hearing such a such a year is what we are shooting for, for as long as we have been fans. Circumstances change. Doesn't matter if they thought 2021 would be their year. 2019 was and now 2020 is setting itself up that way too. I agree with the rest of your post, except the part about 4 solid starters being worth just as much as a higher end guy, etc. Yes, you are right, throughout the course of 162 that might hold true. But when it comes down to 5 or 7, you need those studs.
  19. I agree with the premise of the first part of your post. I think the rotation improving has alot to do with Berrios improving and turning into one of the best 7-8 pitchers in baseball. Odorizzi though? I think him performing the way he did last year would be about as good as we can expect. Signing a guy like Madbum or Ryu IMO, is more about quality throughout the rotation, than it is about signing one of them to be your ACE. A #2 guy is about all we can expect out of either of them. Berrios, unless we sign Cole or Strasburg, will still be this team's #1 guy. As far as getting any pitcher to sign for 2-3 years that doesn't profile as a 4th-5th starter. It's not gonna happen. You want one of these guys I think 4 years will be the absolute minimum it will take to get them.
  20. You are assuming that the Pohlads taking a risk by upping their payroll would 100% result in smaller profits. That is assumption more than fact. What happens if they up the payroll and make it to a WS? Then the investment made by them would more than be wiped out by the additional revenue making that kind of run would afford them. No one is asking this team to run on slim margins or to lose money all the time. People in Minnesota, generally are pretty frugal and understanding people. All the fans are asking is that when the time is right, like it is now, like it was in 2010, like it was 2006, or in the early 2000s, that they bet on their team, coaches, and fans and go ahead and take that chance. Pay more, move a few prospects if needed. Give it everything you can to make that run.
  21. Then I am totally, 100% behind this signing. It's too bad, our catcher position had to be the best in baseball last year, or close to it, they were amazing together. In fact, it was so good that I am not sure the capability for it to be that good again is there. My guess is we see a fairly large regression offensively from Garver this year. Hope not, he was studly last season.
  22. Most likely. This guy is actually gonna be a pretty good backup catcher. But I just don't know why you would mess with something that went so extremely well for you last year. Especially when you know Castro isn't going to command a ton of cash. Now, he might want to start somewhere and then that is totally acceptable. To not bring him back though because he was gonna cost a little extra dough though is inexcusable.
  23. Good move. I like this guy as a backup catcher. I am very curious though why more effort wasn't put into retaining Castro? Last year's catching situation was flat out, the best in baseball, offensively anyway.
  24. I am extremely glad they got this done. I felt this is a move that simply had to be made. Happy they didn't wait around for other teams to get heavily involved and brought him back. I, like almost everyone else here though feel that now we are back at last years level for the rotation.(I do think Berrios turns the corner this year though). Add 1 more guy that is high end and we are looking pretty good. At worst, add 2 guys you feel can give you a chance.
