Rosario runs well. He plays the outfield well too. I'm not saying your idea wouldn't work, but I think the guy has plenty of speed to play a corner outfield spot, doesn't he?

Article: Standing Pat as a Strategy
Battle ur tail off replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What do you suggest as an option to get good ballplayers in here then? Wait for AAA help and sign washed up guys and dumpster dives? Why dive for junk? Why not let your home grown guys fill those holes if you are so confident in them? Save the money and use it for high end talent, rather than spread it out on alot of middling guys. I don't get what you want either. Will some FA deals or trades fail? Yep! They sure will. What about minor league guys? How many of these fail to produce? Lots, right? I don't think anyone here is opining that the Twins need to spend huge all the time, bring in the biggest free agents, etc. People just want talented players on this team. That might mean spending some money on a free agent once in awhile. Or "gasp" trading a few of your top prospects. Imagine the return they could have had trading Buxton and Sano when they were lighting up AA? HUGE This team hasn't produced a high end pitcher since Santana and really hasn't had a bopper come out of their minor league system either since Morneau. When there is a chance to get a young stud pitcher or hitter, I'm fine trading away a A or AA guy you think has a "chance" to be a stud. I'm also fine with signing a guy to a 3 or 4 year deal for big money. -
100%. Cruz gets on base and hits the ball a mile. He also guzzles down steroids and is good at hiding it so his old body can play for a bit yet.

Article: What's the Plan with Tyler Austin?
Battle ur tail off replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm really not sure why you say this. This Cron character doesn't inspire me at all. I look at him as another Logan Morrison, and I'm guessing that is what we will get. Strikes out alot, hits for power, no one wants him, dumpster pickup. Don't expect alot from this guy. Let him and Austin fight it out in Spring training. Put Cave in that group too. You can keep 2 of the three. None of the 3 of them are must haves. Let a couple win the job and one guy lose it. -

It's flat out silly to not go out and sign the 2 best relief pitchers out there in free agency. This can be done for a fairly decent price, and generally low on years. They should not be looking at guys like Soria, they should be ALL IN for Britton, Familia and Herrera, or whomever they feel are the absolute best guys out there. NOT, who is "value" or "payroll friendly". Get the best guys, period. Someone offers 3/40? Offer 3/55. Get some damn balls and bring in some studs that throw hard and strike guys out. Get the turds off your roster who just take up space and chew bubble gum out there behind the outfield fence. -
I'd sign Cruz and Ramos and no to the other guys. The others are just players that will eat up payroll and give you the same type of production you can get from your own home grown guys. We don't have a bat in our system, except Sano with the type of power and onbase skills Cruz posseses. We don't have a catcher in our system period, except one that is hurt all the time and has a terrible bat. Go after the talent, leave the mediocre guys for someone else to overpay.

What you are forgetting is that guys like Austin or Cron are nobodies. They are cast offs, 26th men types. They are the definition of dumpster players. If they were so valued, we couldn't get them for a song. There will be warts, large ones on both of those guys or they wouldn't have been let go for nothing. Have the 2 of them compete for the spot. The one who doesn't make it, gets relegated to the minor leagues and used in case of an injury like the other teams that let them go did.

ZERO idea? Are you sure about that? I think most of us here have an idea. And by the sounds of what this article states, they have a pretty good idea also. It's not what any of us want to hear, but my guess is that one is softer than Charmin and can't be counted on, and the other is lazy as hell and won't put in the work to improve. The Twins may have backed the wrong horse with these two. I hope I am wrong. I REALLY want to be wrong, but right now, it ain't lookin good. -
It wasn't a big trade though. They missed opportunities to package Hicks up and bring back real talent. Instead they dumped him at his lowest point for a catcher that is flat terrible. At some point you have to take risks. Whether that is trading your best thought of "prospects" or signing someone to a big dollar deal, or trading some of your best players for prospects you think might be something special. Always going the easy/safe way has put the Twins in the same positions they always are. Either miss the playoffs totally, or make them then get bounced right away.

Article: Where Are We Now?
Battle ur tail off replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's just business as usual here in Twins territory. One year deals on mid level guys. Yippee. Just bring up guys from the farm if this is the approach. Unless those free agents are complimentary guys, then I guess whatever.- 112 replies

I'm with you as long as the plan then is to add real ballplayers in free agency and trades. If you do as you're suggesting, but then "fill in" with Rondell White's or Ricky Nolasco's and Logan Forsythe's, you will continue to be perpetually mediocre. Sign or trade for high end guys or fill in with your own is what I would like to see. That doesn't mean you don't make some of these mid level signings, but signing mid level guys to bat 4th or 5th in your lineup, or be a top 2 starter in your rotation has got them in trouble for years.

Yours is the right approach IMO. Twins should always be looking to upgrade, every year with guys that can be here for a few years. People say they aren't ready to contend next year. Yep, they probably are not. But getting a 26 year old stud pitcher should pay dividends for 3-4 more years. When a chance to get a real stud or difference maker is there, if your team can make it happen without screwing up your roster or sadly payroll in the Twins world, you should do it. Waiting around for every player to have career years or be "ready" to contend is a never ending battle with no end in sight.- 112 replies

You might be right, I have just had enough of the Lance Lynn types, or Logan Morrison's. etc. Just feel as if these spots could be filled from within the organization. At best these types of signings turn into average or slightly below average players for us most times. Maybe you don't have to buy big name free agents. Maybe trading for the type of studs needed and then extending them would be the way to go? I just am of the belief that improving the talent level and getting ballplayers with high ceilings is in order. Is there some risk in that? For sure. But I just don't feel the mid level range type of players are going to get us anywhere.
-
No, 100%. Buy a stud, or don't buy at all. Doing what you suggest here is how you end up with Logan Morrison's, or Ricky Nolascos. I'd rather they just fill in with players from their minor leagues than shop in the bargain bin, then aim higher when they identify someone studly they want. Does it have to be this year? No, and it doesn't have to be Machado. But the C level free agent should be a thing of the past for this team unless it is filling a hole that there is no one in their system able to do so.

This is classic Twins/Terry Ryan/Cheapskate thinking. DH is a position that should hit well and for power. Not a place to put a guy that is decent at everything, but not particularly good at anything. When is the last time to Twin have employed a good DH? Get a bat. One that hits for power and gets on base. Or move Sano over there and be done with him in the field.

Give him a glove and tell him to catch the ball. 1B easiest position to fill defensively on the diamond. I'm not worried at all having someone or anyone play out of position for a short stretch to play 1B.

That's EXACTLY the kind of thing the old regime did. Offer something they know won't win the bid, then tell the media how close they were or how hard they tried. I'm not saying you are wrong in your analysis, but this new regime really hasn't proven to do anything bold as of yet. They've traded away guys that weren't coming back next year. Signed short term deals for low dollar amounts on Free Agents and traded one potential stud relief pitcher. Maybe they will, this offseason is huge for them.

Article: A Tale of Two Paths for Twins
Battle ur tail off replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is where I am at. It doesn't have to be this massive spending spree. I just want the Twins when they do decide to spend on free agent, to go after ones that will be difference makers. Same in trades. I don't like signing average to below average guys and wasting money on them when these spots can most likely be filled from within your system for little to nothing money-wise.- 87 replies

4 million for a middle infielder and 5 for a 1B? Spend this kind of money and you will get more of the same C level talent they always go for. If this is what they want to do, just fill in with guys already in your system that don't cost anything. That or go big.- 87 replies

I'll be honest. I don't care what happened. He wasn't charged and that's all that matters. If he comes to spring training in shape and ready to work, then he has done his job. Get all fussy and cut a guy like this and I will bet it's about 99% certain that some team with their crap together signs him and turns him into the stud hitter we all know he can be.
