I'd sign Cruz and Ramos and no to the other guys. The others are just players that will eat up payroll and give you the same type of production you can get from your own home grown guys. We don't have a bat in our system, except Sano with the type of power and onbase skills Cruz posseses. We don't have a catcher in our system period, except one that is hurt all the time and has a terrible bat. Go after the talent, leave the mediocre guys for someone else to overpay.

What you are forgetting is that guys like Austin or Cron are nobodies. They are cast offs, 26th men types. They are the definition of dumpster players. If they were so valued, we couldn't get them for a song. There will be warts, large ones on both of those guys or they wouldn't have been let go for nothing. Have the 2 of them compete for the spot. The one who doesn't make it, gets relegated to the minor leagues and used in case of an injury like the other teams that let them go did.

Article: Standing Pat as a Strategy
Battle ur tail off replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
ZERO idea? Are you sure about that? I think most of us here have an idea. And by the sounds of what this article states, they have a pretty good idea also. It's not what any of us want to hear, but my guess is that one is softer than Charmin and can't be counted on, and the other is lazy as hell and won't put in the work to improve. The Twins may have backed the wrong horse with these two. I hope I am wrong. I REALLY want to be wrong, but right now, it ain't lookin good. -
It wasn't a big trade though. They missed opportunities to package Hicks up and bring back real talent. Instead they dumped him at his lowest point for a catcher that is flat terrible. At some point you have to take risks. Whether that is trading your best thought of "prospects" or signing someone to a big dollar deal, or trading some of your best players for prospects you think might be something special. Always going the easy/safe way has put the Twins in the same positions they always are. Either miss the playoffs totally, or make them then get bounced right away.

Article: Where Are We Now?

It's just business as usual here in Twins territory. One year deals on mid level guys. Yippee. Just bring up guys from the farm if this is the approach. Unless those free agents are complimentary guys, then I guess whatever.- 112 replies

I'm with you as long as the plan then is to add real ballplayers in free agency and trades. If you do as you're suggesting, but then "fill in" with Rondell White's or Ricky Nolasco's and Logan Forsythe's, you will continue to be perpetually mediocre. Sign or trade for high end guys or fill in with your own is what I would like to see. That doesn't mean you don't make some of these mid level signings, but signing mid level guys to bat 4th or 5th in your lineup, or be a top 2 starter in your rotation has got them in trouble for years.

Yours is the right approach IMO. Twins should always be looking to upgrade, every year with guys that can be here for a few years. People say they aren't ready to contend next year. Yep, they probably are not. But getting a 26 year old stud pitcher should pay dividends for 3-4 more years. When a chance to get a real stud or difference maker is there, if your team can make it happen without screwing up your roster or sadly payroll in the Twins world, you should do it. Waiting around for every player to have career years or be "ready" to contend is a never ending battle with no end in sight.- 112 replies

You might be right, I have just had enough of the Lance Lynn types, or Logan Morrison's. etc. Just feel as if these spots could be filled from within the organization. At best these types of signings turn into average or slightly below average players for us most times. Maybe you don't have to buy big name free agents. Maybe trading for the type of studs needed and then extending them would be the way to go? I just am of the belief that improving the talent level and getting ballplayers with high ceilings is in order. Is there some risk in that? For sure. But I just don't feel the mid level range type of players are going to get us anywhere.
-
No, 100%. Buy a stud, or don't buy at all. Doing what you suggest here is how you end up with Logan Morrison's, or Ricky Nolascos. I'd rather they just fill in with players from their minor leagues than shop in the bargain bin, then aim higher when they identify someone studly they want. Does it have to be this year? No, and it doesn't have to be Machado. But the C level free agent should be a thing of the past for this team unless it is filling a hole that there is no one in their system able to do so.

This is classic Twins/Terry Ryan/Cheapskate thinking. DH is a position that should hit well and for power. Not a place to put a guy that is decent at everything, but not particularly good at anything. When is the last time to Twin have employed a good DH? Get a bat. One that hits for power and gets on base. Or move Sano over there and be done with him in the field.

Give him a glove and tell him to catch the ball. 1B easiest position to fill defensively on the diamond. I'm not worried at all having someone or anyone play out of position for a short stretch to play 1B.

That's EXACTLY the kind of thing the old regime did. Offer something they know won't win the bid, then tell the media how close they were or how hard they tried. I'm not saying you are wrong in your analysis, but this new regime really hasn't proven to do anything bold as of yet. They've traded away guys that weren't coming back next year. Signed short term deals for low dollar amounts on Free Agents and traded one potential stud relief pitcher. Maybe they will, this offseason is huge for them.

Article: A Tale of Two Paths for Twins

This is where I am at. It doesn't have to be this massive spending spree. I just want the Twins when they do decide to spend on free agent, to go after ones that will be difference makers. Same in trades. I don't like signing average to below average guys and wasting money on them when these spots can most likely be filled from within your system for little to nothing money-wise.- 87 replies

4 million for a middle infielder and 5 for a 1B? Spend this kind of money and you will get more of the same C level talent they always go for. If this is what they want to do, just fill in with guys already in your system that don't cost anything. That or go big.- 87 replies

I'll be honest. I don't care what happened. He wasn't charged and that's all that matters. If he comes to spring training in shape and ready to work, then he has done his job. Get all fussy and cut a guy like this and I will bet it's about 99% certain that some team with their crap together signs him and turns him into the stud hitter we all know he can be.
-
Twins need to identify the 2 best arms in free agency or trade and get them. Overpay or deal your guys to get them. Preferably guys under the age of 30. No low end guys, fliers, etc. Get the cats in here that throw 97 with hammer breaking balls. They won't because they are the Twins. But this is the quickest way to get yourself back to being in contention IMO. And it's simple. Most likely all it costs is money.

Battle ur tail off replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
False, you are cherry picking to make him look bad. Look at his career numbers. Then realize he's got a cannon for an arm and plays his ass off every game. He's slugged around .500 the last few seasons. The guy has serious pop in his bat. I will give you the plate discipline, but here you have a corner outfielder with pop, plays pretty good defense and is in his prime. -

What depth is that of what you speak? Buxton? Kepler? Cave? So far none of them are better than average or below average outfield pieces. Rosario is the best hitter in this lineup and plays a good outfield. The outfielders you are counting as depth are either in the minors, or play at best at a replacement level. Aim higher for once, seriously. It would be one thing if Kiriloff was up here and producing, but the guy hasn't played about A ball. There is as good a chance he flops, than he is a major league starter capable of playing as good or better than Rosario. Trading Rosario only happens for me if you get an ace pitcher back. That is it, he is untouchable in my eyes. Rosario + Gordon or something for Degrom? Maybe then, but that's about it. You know that won't happen. I would see the offer for him being some kind of BS prospect and a middling type ballplayer. Not worth it. Go for high end talent or go home. Kepler, I just don't see him bringing back enough to make it worth trading him. He is worth more to us than anyone else. -

Trade Rosario?? I am going to have to strongly disagree with this kind of thinking. Always playing for the future sucks. "Our prospects will take over!!" Or, "let's play some 5th outfielder fodder and try to pass them off as major league corner outfielders? Don't like it. Here you have an above average outfielder that is a hell of a hitter, he's young. plays with fire every game and you want to move him? Kiriloff, if you haven't noticed is in A ball. Might he make it and be better than Rosario? Yes, he might, but chances are he WON'T. Kepler? Why move him for what will probably amount to a bench player type? Because that is all he is worth on the open market. I'm sick of getting smoked in every trade we make. -
I think it MIGHT be time we admit the fact that Sano is never going to play the field. And I also think it might be time to admit that Buxton will never hit. It was plain as day the first week he was up, that Buxton possesses little to no hitting skills. He just doesn't. I don't know how scouts could have missed on this guy so bad, he has no clue at the plate. Sano needs to just focus on hitting and not worry about playing the field. DH him and be done with it. Take the extra reps at the plate and become one of the best hitters of this generation. All he does is get hurt when he plays in the field anyway. If it were me, I would work on Buxton bunting the damn ball, hitting it into the ground, and stealing bases. He will never hit for power the way he is constantly guessing up there. This isn't Rickey Henderson here, he's very similar to that guy the Royals had a few years ago that could run like hell and field, but not much else. I honestly hope I am wrong here, but if what we have seen so far is any indication, this might the road to take. It sucks, but these guys probably have 1 year left of full time player status and then its time to move a different direction. All of that said. There is NO WAY I give up and trade these guys or release them. We have seen it happen too many times and even as bit players, these guys are plenty valuable. Keep them around. But be prepared if it doesn't happen this year to move from them being your cornerstones.
