I'd take either. I think the play is to sign one of these guys, make sure Odorizi is locked down, offer Pineda a fairly cheap deal and tell him he owes us, then make a trade for a younger arm you think you can slot into the top 3 of your rotation for quite a few years. That way, you would have 5 pitchers ready to go. Of course, Pineda woulnd't be able to throw right away and even when he is, you will have that minor league depth to help out if and when someone gets hurt.

This kind of describes the way I feel. I'm sure others do too. I just don't trust Twins ownership to ever shed the cheap and dumpster diving tendencies that have been around for years and years. Basically, show me you have the seeds to do something significant, and then I will buy all in.

Yep, 70 mill is alot. Let it rip and use up all of the money if you think it can help your club. Play for now for a change. If every there was a time to go after it, it is now. Worse case a few of the guys you sign don't take you anywhere. Well, then they can be moved again in a year or two for more prospects to make up ground in the area you lost a few of your own by not signing, trading, etc.
-
How does it miss the point though? My point is that, if you are top bidder, you will get them signed more than 75% of the time. I don't believe in this player or that player would take less money to be on the coast, etc. I'm fine with what you suggested by the way. Getting on that second tier early is probably the smartest play. There is realistically very little chance the Twins come away with Cole or Strasburg. They just won't commit the type of money needed to get them here. Make good offers to the best of the rest and let's get them before the Yankees or someone throws stupid money at them. I'm also with you on Ryu. Don't want him unless he would sign a 1-2 year deal, which he wont.

Exploring Five Twins Extension Candidates
Battle ur tail off replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
And that is also why when someone comes a callin for one of those prospects and is willing to give up something of value for them, you don't clench them with such a tight fist. I like Rosario and feel he should be kept here until he reaches free agency. That said, he is pretty much Jacque Jones and I kind of feel he should be treated the same way Jacque was. Pay him what he's worth when he's here, but when its time to part way, its time.- 38 replies

I would never give up that kind of ask for Syndergaard. I don't believe that is what it would have taken to get him though. One of those top 2 guys, maybe a guy in that 7-15 range and a throw in lottery pick most likely would have done it IMO. And I am all for those types of trades if they are available. Young pitcher, amazing stuff, controllable for a couple years. To be clear. I also don't trade our very top guys unless the talent you bring back is also high end. Marcus Stroman. Yep, I think beating the offer made that ultimately landed him wouldn't have hurt us too bad. That said, this type of guy isn't someone I'd sell the farm for, and he most definitely is not worth someone of the caliber of any of our top 3 prospects.

I brought up Archer and think he fits that bill. Sonny Gray is another one that could be had in that range. Those are just a few off the top of my head.

Exploring Five Twins Extension Candidates
Battle ur tail off replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The only reason IMO it would make sense to extend Rodgers is to try and buy out his abitration years for less money. I would't though. I feel like there is a much better chance he washes out than he is still a dominant reliever by the time he is into his 30s. Just a feeling... If he is still dominant at the end of arbitration, you can use him as a trade chip that season if needed, make a decision about signing him then.- 38 replies

If Cole's best offer were 6/200 and we offered him 6/225, he'd be ours. It's that simple IMO. I don't think we will get him. But if we are the highest bidder, I'd bet we do. Might not be the best investment towards the end of his deal, but I don't agree that players turn down more money very often to play somewhere they feel the weather is nicer, etc.
-
Thanks and I agree with most of what you say as well. I just am not of the belief that there should be players or prospects that are off limits when it comes to improving a team such as this that has a real chance with a roster full of young talented ballplayers. If that means as Ace comes at the hand of trading one of our top 3 guys, then do it as long as you have someone on your MLB roster already manning their position.

Our 5-10 ranked prospects in our system would be worth a fair amount IMO. Packaged up, there is no doubt in my mind they could bring back a player in the mold of Chris Archer, or someone of that stature. I don't believe trading these type of guys is a good idea all the time. Far from it. But when you are in the position the Twins find themselves in now. Young team/lineup on cheap deal, ready to contend, minor league full of talent, I think it's time to use a few of them to add those missing pieces and attempt to take things all the way. Will it be risky? Sure, of course it is. That said, if you see your team as that true contender and have that chance, it only comes around once every 10 years or so as we have seen by following this club. Just go ahead and go for it. If you have to move some of your veterans in a few years to re-stock, then by all means go ahead. The time is now though, the iron is hot. Let's not waste this chance.

What the hell does FV mean? He traded prospects that were way down the depth chart in our system. Wake me up when a difference maker is brought in and "gasp" they have to give up an actual MLB starting level player to get him.

Nice article and as said, a great idea. These are the kind of guys I love taking a chance on. Young, talented, had a bad year, but a strong bounce back candidate. I also agree with how you are looking at it. If he comes in here, he comes in with our club thinking he will be a back of the rotation type guy and if you get more great. Throwing all you eggs in his basket as your top pitching FA/Trade guy though would be risky IMO.
-
I hope we keep this guy around. He reminds me of Carl Pavano. Nothing that suggest he is a #1 type guy or anything, but the type of cat that will go out and give you a solid 5-6 almost every game and once in awhile jump up and give you more. He's a perfect #3 type guy. IMO, he has lots of value both here and on the FA market. One of those guys that you pretty much know what you are going to get from him every game. I mean he's pretty much been the same guy his entire career. He was good in Tampa and he has been good here. With the situation the Twins are in, even if he decides he doesn't want the QO, I would make almost 100% sure this guy is on the roster for the next few years. Can't afford to let him go.
-
It wasn't though and you know it. That's the thing guys. Look what rental players and players in general get traded for. Generally, it is never anywhere near what the Twins media team reports as what was asked for from our club. I agree though, if that were truly what happened, he wouldn't have been worth Lewis. He's worth a shot now to add as another lefty in our bullpen though for sure.

Minnesota Twins 2010s All-Decade Team
Battle ur tail off replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The 90's were bad, but do you remember 92? They were pretty dang good that year as well. I agree with the rest of your post though. The 2010's were pretty bad. Lots of terribleness in there. LOL Except 2010. They had a nice team that year. I also feel like it was a wasted chance, a pretty good offense with no one to head the rotation. This was the year they messed up a chance to add Cliff Lee. Huge blunder.- 12 replies

Hoping he accepts or that we are able to sign him to like a 3 year deal. Be awful tough sledding if he ends up walking. He's the largest resigning need the Twins have IMO.
-
I understand he may have cost a little more, but my point is I don't care. Quit hording multiple prospects and pony up. I will give this organization the off season to prove themselves. If it results in a stand pat or move backwards direction, I will be the first person in line to skewer the FO and ownership(not that I mean anything to anyone LOL ). This core needs supplementing in order to take the next step and be a postseason contender. It's time right now. Don't let a replay of the Santana/Hunter/M&M core replay itself.
-
Should have traded for Will Smith. The FO overthought this one. The best reliever on that team was Smith. He was a rental, but he is and was much better than Dyson. Now it bit them. I'd have much rather had Smith on the roster and trying to negotiate with him right now than what happened with Dyson. That said, he(Smith) will still be out there for the taking and probably would be a pretty good add to our bullpen.

Assessing Eddie Rosario's Trade Market
Battle ur tail off replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You don't trade starting players off of your team when you are contending unless it brings back someone that helps you win now. If Rosario is traded, it MUST be for someone they can plug into the rotation or the back end of the bullpen. If that takes other prospects to do so, fine. If not, then go ahead and just write his name down on your lineup card for next season. Just silly the amount of people that seem to want to be rid of this guy and would be willing to give him up for not much return. Crazy IMO. Don't worry, your dream minor league outfielders will be here hitting .215 soon enough. -
It's more my distrust of the organization and the cheap way in which they have operated forever. I don't trust that they would even use the savings to add talent. They would probably say they needed it to give Ordorizzi his raise. My point is, the Twins have more than enough money hanging around where they don't have to start a Jake Cave or an unproven prospect in left field when they are in contention. Keep Rosario unless he is part of a bigger package for some studly pitching. If the Twins move him for minor league players with the situation this team is in right now, it will just reinforce my belief that they are cheap and miserly.
-
Give Cave an everyday job and he will get slaughtered. Plus, if you think Rosario's defense was bad, Cave is worse than that. Rosario is also a middle of the order bat, while Cave is most definitely not. I already said I'd be fine with moving on from Rosario if its to go after some pitching talent. However, if you get rid of him and sign the type of guy you would likely get with Rosario's 8 mill, it's not worth it. Those types of starters grade out as a much worse version of Kyle Gibson at best.
-
I wouldn't feel good, but I am with you on those other guys. I would rather go big or go home. If we are signing guys like this to be our #4 and 5 starters, I would just as soon roll with someone in our system. I have said this all along. I think if you are going to bring in free agents, bring in high end guys. Fill the rest of your holes with your system. In this case, aim for guys that you think have the talent to be #3 or better pitchers whether it is in FA or trade.
