  1. A pitcher that actually strikes out batters? Hey, let's hold on to him! And I also like the idea of May becoming the team's closer next year. All in all, a very nice game. Effective pitching and timely hits. Wish we had more like that this year.
  2. Like everyone else I'm disappointed the Buxton has been injured so often and hasn't put up better offensive numbers. But look at the player selected before him in the draft. Carlos Correa of the Astros. After a sizzling start to his career he's battled injuries this year and is only hitting .238. Not the end of the world, but it still shows you that even talented players will have their ups and downs. At this point, i'm just hoping for a healthy Buxton in 2019, and one that can finally put it all together. We need him.
  3. I have to admit that I like it too. I love the fact that teams are willing to mess with "conventional wisdom" and try something a bit different. Let the "started" pitch an inning or two and then turn it over to another pitcher ... or three. I think it's worth trying.
  4. I thought the Pineda signing was a savvy one. I'm a patient guy. But I'm also disappointed that he got injured again and couldn't pitch a few games, even out of the bullpen, for the Twins this year. As for next year, can we honestly expect him to contribute? That would be wonderful, but at this point I'm not counting my chickens.
  5. At this point in time I say no to big contracts and aging free agents. The Twins should try and target the hidden gems out there, players who could thrive if given the opportunity. I'm thinking of players like Max Muncy or Scooter Gennett, or Blake Treinen, or even an older reclamation project like Johnny Venters or Edwin Jackson. Even a Daniel Palka (now with 26 homes!) type can be useful. No sense spending big money on the Logan Morrisons of the world There's gold in them hills! Just have to dig deeper.
  6. Somewhat off topic, but you mentioned Grossman. I've never had strong feelings either way about him --- I can pretty much take him or leave him --- but he seems to be hitting very well the past month or so, one of the stronger bats in an otherwise weak lineup.
  7. I think the Twins would have needed Sanchez and a more quality players to have even come within sniffing distance of a playoff spot this year. On that note: Go Braves!
  8. At least we weren't beaten by the heroics of Drew Butera this time.
  9. On a retro note, seeing the list of Previous Twins Daily Minor League Starting Pitchers of the Year, the winner in 2012 caught my eye: B.J. Hermsen. I have to admit that I have zero recollection of this guy. Whatever happened to him?
  10. At this point, I'm waiting to celebrate the end of this thoroughly dreadful season. I'll say it once: man, this is one boring team. I had so much optimism at the start of the year, but following this team --- and cheering for them --- has become too much of a chore. Yeah, I suppose I should watch the handful of prospects who have been called up, or the scraps from the trades we've made, but I just can't get very excited about any of it.
  11. I'm glad that Tom brought up the subject of Berrios and his recent struggles. I can't remember the last time he had an impressive start, but it must have been well before the All-Star game. Not sure what the answer is? At this point I don't know if shutting him down will do that much, so might as well let him keep pitching and work on whatever he needs to work on. Any other ideas?
  12. Amidst all the conjecture about Mauer and Buxton, this comment really struck me. How tarnished do you think the front office's reputation has become in the past year? I have no inside knowledge to know as to whether that's accurate or not, I'm just curious. And if they have garnered a bad rep in so short a period of time, I think we should all be worried.
  13. Rating managers is such an inexact science. As others have noted, it's nearly impossible to measure with any sort of accuracy. I was also a huge Atlanta Braves fan a few decades back and watching Bobby Cox manage games used to drive me nuts. Most people thought he was some sort of genius, but I always thought his decisions were very puzzling if not maddening. If he hadn't have had so many teams loaded with talent I don't think he would be the great manager that people seem to think he was. I'm sort of in the middle of the pack regarding Molitor's managing ability. Don't hate, don't love him. I think he does a good enough job but has a few weak points too. That said, I don't think any manager could have done much better with this year's raggedy team and the variety of injuries and woeful performances that have occurred.
  14. Blank Blanks Reds The only thing that could have bettered that headline was if he had defeated a team called the Blankets!
  15. Two poor starts by Stewart, which is obviously very disappointing and unimpressive, but I say keep him up for the rest of the season and see what he can do. Let him take his lumps, get shelled some more, maybe gain some confidence by a good outing or two, whatever. But at this point I think the big league experience can only help him, plus it will give the front office a better idea about what to do with him, and whether they think he will actually be part of the team's future or not, either as a starter or in the bullpen. In a lost season like this one, I think the team can afford to be patient with struggling youngsters like Stewart.
  16. The first pinch-hit homer by the Twins all year?! Yikes! Now I'm depressed all over again.
  17. In a lost season like this one, these sorts of feel-good moments (Mauer's pinch-hit homer in particular) seem all the more sweeter. A fun game indeed.
  18. I'm not suggesting that we try and tank for the remainder of the season, but that would be preferable than trying to reach the .500 level. I mean, the worse we finish the better chance we'll have in the June draft, right? I think that matters more at this point.
  19. Yes indeed, it certainly makes you wonder. As noted in previous posts, the development of each player is different, but it appears that both Lewis and Kirilloff are special cases and "rushing" them to the majors may not be such a bad idea. I'm all for patience and caution when the situations warrant it, but it would also be refreshing to the Twins promote guys like these two who have shown unusual aptitude.
  20. Hmm, not a bad idea. Let's emulate Tampa Bay's strategy!
  21. Like most everyone else on the board I'm very surprised if not shocked by the move. But I also love it. Just the fact that the head office is doing something unexpected and daring gives me hope. Sure, Thorpe and/or Gonsalves probably earned a callup sooner than Stewart, but current circumstances have combined to make this an understandable move. Good luck to him!
  22. Good article, especially noting the "unfairness" of some of the stats and results that Kepler has this season. I'm basing my opinion on only a handful of clips of Kepler I've seen in the past month, but his approach at the plate looks better/smoother (more fluid?), and that all-important self-confidence seems to be kicking in as well. Hope he continues to make progress. We need him in that outfield.
  23. I agree. I think he's earned a September callup if nothing else.
  24. I'd rather see the team hang on to Odorizzi. I think we'll need another dependable arm in the starting rotation next year, and overall he's been fairly good this year. As far as Rodney, I'm happy to see him go, "veteran presence" or not. Sure, he's a fun player to have around, one of the few that still seems to have a zest for the game, and at his advanced age he's still a relatively effective reliever. But as others have stated, he's not going to be part of the team's future, or even of much need next year, so might as well get something for 7 weeks of his services. Good move.
