  1. Obvious to me as well. His pull rate isn’t as high (until this year) as you might think...but he does TRY to pull everything. Everything. Result: balls hit to left of center are almost always poorly struck and the result of him getting beat by a pitch that he’s trying to pull. With his approach, sustained improvements mostly limited to the BB/K ratio and HR rate.
  2. College pitcher or big-time bat, I hope. I know only the toolsy guys tend to go super early. But I, for one, will not be upset if we take a bat with true top-end potential with number 13...regardless of where he projects defensively. We've got enough toolsy middle infielders and center-field types in the system who may or may not hit. What we don't have much of are guys that can flat out rake. If dude ends up being a 1B/DH only, so be it.
  3. Still emerging. Several realistic candidates, which is a good thing.
  4. I agree that there are reasonable arguments/reasons/scenarios for a 12-man staff. And hope that that is what happens. But I don't think that will be the decision/outcome...at least not for the majority of the season. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
  5. Lot’s here think the pitching staff will go to 12 when the second of Sano/Astudillo become available? Why? Seems counter to recent history and trends especially as we get out of the cancellations season and into the makeup season. I’m sceptical that the staff will be 12 for anything other than brief periods going forward. I mean, they want 13 in early May, but will want 12 in June because...it’s become too hard to chose which hitters remain?
  6. So here’s the question...batter gets no credit for RBI when grounding into a double play. Does he get the RBI when flying into a double play? If not, I’d make the goofball that got himself thrown out trying to advance buy me dinner after the game.
  7. Garver s—ks! He’s horrible! (If we all do our part, we can keep this thing going. Come on, all you keyboard heros hiding behind your screen...let’s be heard!)
  8. Agree. Kirilloff being real, and Kepler taking even one more half-step in his development...would be a nice problem to have, as they say.
  9. You sure? After the Twins got good in the late 80's, it seemed inconceivable that the outfield of Gladden, Puckett, and Brunansky would be broken up. But the FO was able to leverage Brunansky's value to obtain Tommy Her-- No. Wait. Never mind.
  10. I'm fine with that . But like I posted earlier...I knew Perez would get chances to start against a weak team (or three...our division is full of them)...but I still never expected to see results that good in terms of being in control, avoiding hard contact, getting deep into the game, getting K's, etc. I'm in Brock's "he's probably not THIS good...but it looks like he's legitimately/materially better than the old Perez" camp.
  11. Not sure how it would impact Lewis. In fact, Baddoo is known to take a lot of pitches, which would be good for Lewis. FWIW...Baddoo has been a better offensive player than Lewis so far this year. Both have under-performed, but Baddoo is hitting for extra bases, and has 4 home runs which is 4 more than Lewis, Larnach, and Miranda. Granted, OBP is exceeding low for a lead-off hitter...but I don't think the organization cares that much what that might do to the likelihood of winning A+ games.
  12. The large majority of those that can do that while playing major league shortstop are already on major league rosters.
  13. We’ll see. And that’s the point. It will be interesting to see how the Twins look at it. So far, the only person the Twins have put at SS other than Polanco is Adrianza. And that includes games where a hot-hitting Astudillo was available to play 3rd. My guess is the Twins would be willing to give him the random game at SS to spell Polanco...but wouldn’t want to make him an everyday player there if Polanco went down.
  14. I didn’t like the signing...figured the Twins were well stocked in no 5 starters, some with higher potential. Now, it’s May 6 and that’s two Pérez starts as good or better than the best start I figured he’d have for the entire year. I’ll be glad to keep track as the season continues.
  15. As an everyday shortstop? I’m pretty sure the entire organization would beg to differ. It will have to be a player that can be better than replacement level defensively at that position.
  16. Cave is the first. Makes the team even more right-handed. Meanwhile, there's little to suggest the staff will be anything less than 13, at least for any meaningful period of time. I'd guess we are 4-6 weeks from finding out a couple of things...how comfortable are the Twins with Gonzales filling in at SS to spell Polanco? How comfortable going with Gordon in the event of an IL stint for Polanco? If the answer to either of these is negative, I don't see them parting with Adrianza. Hopefully, we find out...because that would mean no injuries to other players making the questions moot.
  17. Yesterday, I noted that it seems like Rortvedt is a better hitter than Jeffers at this moment in time in their development. Today, I say to Jeffers...You’re welcome.
  18. Weird that Thorpe's starts seem to have only been amazingly great or horribly awful. No in between. One day I want him called up immediately. The next, I'm completely counting him out as an option with the big club. It's unusual to go back and forth the way he has. Struggling to get a feel for the 'new' ball might be plausible, here?
  19. Interesting that Jeffers would get the extra at-bats at DH, and Rortvedt not be considered for that as well. Says something to the early perceptions we develop of players. Rortvedt was struggling offensively in professional baseball as a teen. If the first we had heard about Rortvedt was as a 21-year old raking at a mid-tier college (like Jeffers), we'd probably think of him as a hitting prospect, not 'just' a catcher. At this particular point in their development, Rortvedt certainly appears the better hitter, SSS notwithstanding. Walking more way more, striking out way less, hitting for more extra-bases (even HR's)...everything. And Rortvedt is younger. Yes, I get the power potential with Jeffers bat. And to their credit (at least IMO), Gardenhire/the organization is, in fact, not shorting Rortvedt PA's relative to Jeffers. They have almost the exact same number there. Meanwhile, they are both (especially Rortvedt) throwing out base-runners at a very good clip. It'd be interesting to hear/see early reports on Jeffers' receiving skills.
  20. Regarding the state of the Yankees, the HR was symbolic more than anything...the Yankees were already somewhat buried at that point in the season...and were headed to a stretch of extended irrelevance. When the Twins have been legitimately better than the Yankees, they’ve beaten them...trouble is, that hasn’t happened in this millennia. But it was the case for a stretch of 6 or 7 years through about 1970 and then again for a shorter period in the earlier 90’s. The Twins are better than this injury-depleated version of the Yankees, and need to take advantage.
  21. With the warped numbers in the FSL, it ruins normal context. The hitting, as bad as the numbers are, isn’t that much below league average. The opposite with the pitching. As good as the pitching numbers are, they’ve been good, but not outstanding, relative to the league.
  22. I figured if Perez got 20 starts this year, he'd never have a game that good, or even close to that good when you factor in the innings pitched, pitch count and the opponent.
  23. I'm sure Johnson (and his ilk) have put a lot of thought and research in the ways this can be done while still minimizing that risk. But, I think you're right...it can't eliminate that risk. Two weeks before Gonsalves's elbow blew up, or kinda blew up, or whatever it did, Johnson was quoted in a story that he had Gonsalves "on a road to 95" (mph) velo.
  24. I'll wait for more than 86 PA to declare Buxton has turned the offensive corner. He's OPS'ing 765 now, which would be very ok if he can sustain that. But agree with Howie above, that the leash will not be short for either Buxton or Sano. For now, I just want them both playing extended months of healthy baseball...for their sake, and also for the sake of the club being able to make more informed decisions regarding their future.
  25. Is it just me? In prior years, I don't remember Pineda looking like....he looks.
