Front Page: Assessing Jose Berrios' Pitch Arsenal
jkcarew replied to Cooper Carlson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
From the very beginning of the year, he seems to have been more aggressive throwing the ball over the plate to get ahead early in the count. The results have been pretty predictable. Walk rate has declined a bit, and hits allowed rate has increased a bit. The extra hits have not resulted in more HR’s allowed. And the aggressiveness in the zone has resulted in an improvement in pitches per PA, (although probably contributing to a slight decrease in his K rate.) Other than that, his results are almost identical to last year’s. He’s improved marginally. He’s good. But, he wasn’t a legitimate Cy Young candidate as of 7:00pm on Tuesday, let alone 9:00pm. -
Interesting responses to this. IMO, Berrios has been neither horrible or particularly good (by number 1 standards) in this stretch. The stretch includes one or two 'great' starts along with this clunker. He hasn't given up a ton of runs in this stretch, but nor has he done a great job of consistently pitching efficiently and deep in a manner that would shut down great lineups and/or protect our weak bullpen. I'm simply stating that, in games where our best pitcher pitches, (and often faces the opposition's better pitchers), the Twins are 3-7 in their last 10 games...only beating very weak opponents. My opinion...it will be a challenge in the post-season...and the Twins should be aggressive in trading (in the off-season, since the trade deadline is gone) for more top-of-rotation pitching.

Semantics. Let's go with avoidable, instead of reckless. There have been many center fielders in history that were aggressive in attempting difficult catches. Many knew how to mitigate risk while doing so, and, in fact, were rarely injured. Others, including Buxton, don't/didn't know how to do that. Agree that some of his missed time has been unavoidable...the hbp, etc. But, much has been avoidable.
-
Twins now 3-7 in Berrios’s last 10 starts. The wins coming against the Royals, White Sox, and Marlins.

Also worth maintaining some perspective on where Davis was doing what he was doing. Rochester's team OPS is .829...and Jake Cave was OPS'ing .984. In his 250+ PA at Pensacola this season, Davis was still very good, but the numbers/results were not stupid like we're seeing in AAA this year. At Pensacola, his results were basically the same as Travis Blankenhorn's this year. Relative to Blankenhorn, Davis showed slightly LESS power and slightly more BB/OBP...(and fwiw, Blankenhorn is two years younger than Davis). Still, it seems obvious Davis has hit a new level in his development. He will be an interesting one to watch. I hope he does well...he's earned the opportunity.

Front Page: Buxton’s Body and Cave’s Opportunity
jkcarew replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The backup outfielder debate....if he performs like a starter, we want him in the lineup every day instead of whichever starter is slumping that week. If he doesn't perform immediately, we want any number of other minor-leaguers and/or prospects to replace him. This isn't 2018 where we were forced to play Robbie Grossman. With the make-up of the 2019 club, Cave isn't going to have to play anywhere close to every day, until/unless Rosario or Kepler were to go down. Hope that doesn't happen...but, until it does, it's probably a good bet that Rocco is fine with options like Gonzalez, Cave, Arraez, Adrianza...and doesn't feel like he needs to take still-developing guys with zero major league experience and plop them into the middle of a pennant race. Doing that...or going with a guy like Wade, who is a below-average offensive player in the league he's already playing in...are desperate actions that could be warranted down the line, But we're not there yet, and I hope we don't get there.- 39 replies

In following the Twins minor league clubs this summer, I'm reminded that the Twins have 3 of their most important developmental operations stationed at the very rainiest spots on the continent. That's a statistical fact regarding the areas of the gulf that include Pensacola and Ft Myers....homes to the clubs lowest-level rookie, A+, and AA operations. I assume (almost) all the games get played eventually...although many end up being of the 7-inning make-up variety. It can't help overall development....or, it at least makes some fundamental aspects of development more challenging. (Graterol's current rehab work with the GCL Twins comes to mind, as well as the always-challenging task of managing pitchers' in-game developmental opportunities). Meanwhile, there's zero chance the Twins shift to the southwest and give up the spring-time revenue associated with the Ft. Myers location.

6-4 220 vs 6-3 195 (Baseball Reference). But, you have a point. For whatever reason, he strikes me as significantly shorter and especially slighter of build than that when watching him on TV.

You're walking down the street...next week somewhere outside of Milwaukee. You're not a baseball fan but do TV and social media. Walking in the opposite direction, you pass Nelson Cruz, CJ Cron, Jose Berrios, Kyle Gibson, Miguel Sano, Max Kepler, Michael Pineda, Luis Arraez, Mitch Garver, etc., etc...and Devin Smeltzer. You immediately determine these must be members of a professional sports club, and you assume Devin Smeltzer is... a) equipment manager b. assistant to the assistant team manager c) team statistician d) team physician e) agent or legal representation f) lost g) kid seeking autographs h) star of recent match/game I'd struggle between c) and g)

Yeah. From what I've read, Bauer Units means nothing, in itself, in terms of quality of pitch or amount of movement, etc. Instead, it just means that the nature of the movement you have is going to be different for those with high BU vs those with low BU. So...BU value is high, you should work your fastball middle-up...and if low, you should work your fastball middle-down. The long-term hope for Smeltzer is/was/will be...not just good command...but exceptional command...of multiple pitches. Easy guy to pull for, that's for sure.

Javier has a month-plus remaining in his 4th professional season, and he's just passing 400 plate appearances. I think it's going to be hard to tell for a while if he's going to be a bust...or simply a late-developer based on the extreme injury issues he faced early on. Meanwhile, I wish there was a lower league for the high school kids that sign. Part of the problem is that I don't think there are enough HS kids that sign any more. The GCL is mostly 2nd/3rd-year HS signees and late-drafted college guys. Many (most?) of the first-year HS signees are not Lewis or Kirilloff...they're not ready for the GCL, let alone the Appy or Midwest leagues. Case in point...Keoni Cavaco. I'd like to see him playing games regularly, and I'd like to see him succeeding some when he plays them. Neither of those things are happening at this point.

Kepler 2018 vs 2019 OPS+... 97 ; 129 K%...15.7; 15.7 BB%...11.6; 9.7 BABiP....236; .251 HR%....3.3; 6.5 Kepler career BABiP: .255 Christian Yelich career BABiP: .358 Kepler's improvement is almost completely tied to balls in the air traveling over the fence. That may or may not be sustainable (the ball, contact quality data, etc.). But, would love to see him improve at hitting balls hard to left and left-center and see him get more 'relief' from the BABiP.

Front Page: 2019 MLB Trade Deadline Review
jkcarew replied to Cooper Carlson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Fair way to look at it. My take... The post-season competition for the pennant is a tournament. The three possible participants against which the Twins would be substantial underdogs: the Yankees, Astros, and Red Sox (although currently 2 games out in the WC). Against 2 of these three teams, our odds probably got slightly better. Meanwhile, I don't think our odds to win the central are materially worse. I like what the Indians did...but especially, I like what it did longer-term for them. Not a disaster, but primarily because of what other teams failed to do...not because of what the Twins FO WAS able to do. -

Due to deferments and other bonuses, there's much more than $75M owed to Greinke. David Adler, MLB.com... "Greinke is owed the prorated portion of his $21 million salary for 2019, as well as what’s left of the final two years of the deal, which comes out to $112.5 million (including deferred payments) when you also include two $3 million bonus payments he is still owed, as well as a $2 million trade bonus."- 206 replies

Front Page: Twins Acquire RHP Sam Dyson from Giants
jkcarew replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The thing I'll give Houston credit for...they've been way better at executing the tank strategy than any other MLB team to date. They were at the vanguard of the tanking movement and executed that strategy in a big way...accumulating draft picks and selling high on what talent stumbled their way. Then drafted and developed well, amassing a tone of capital. Then aggressively spent capital when the window came. It will be interesting to see how long they can sustain it, as they accumulate pennants/rings, but go through a ton of their capital while doing so.- 206 replies

I kinda agree. But, therein lies the problem. The sellers aren't moving the high end arms. If they were, the Yankees (at least) would have landed one by now. Still, I don't know why the Twins wouldn't have been aggressive on one more mid-tier reliever. Couldn't have hurt, and you're going to end up moving/exposing some of these prospects sooner or later, regardless.

Should be fewer 'hard' choices at Diplan's position than Diaz's position, though. Diplan will have a couple of months to audition to keep his 40-man spot at a position of need, and it didn't cost anything. Not what this thread is about, but good nevertheless.

My reaction, to at least some extend, would depend on what I see the other contenders do. If multiple teams in the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Astros, Cubs categories can't make a 'big' deal for pitching...to me, that would be an indicator that this year was unique. I still think that's unlikely...but with 4 hours to go, and counting...it's looking at least possible.

Article: Is Alex Kirilloff Expendable?
jkcarew replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think I would consider Kirilloff my most valuable trading chip. More valuable than Lewis at this point in time. I'm basing this on the assumption that the FO/staff consider Kirilloff as having the best Hit tool in the system...by a significant margin. That's an assumption that I don't know to be true. But it's realistic...and, if that's how the club evaluates Kirilloff, then there are very few scenarios that would warrant parting with him. The hit tool trumps everything...by a mile. See Luis Arraez.- 31 replies
