  1. Buxton hasn't even come close to putting a ball in play. He really looks like he needs 3-4 weeks at AAA to get some sort of rhythm/confidence.
  2. If the Twins want to have any chance at keeping pace with Cleveland they need to improve the roster. Having multiple Grossman, Adrianza, Wilson, Petit, and LaMarre caliber players in the lineup every night is just killing the offense.
  3. Looks like Hughes time with the Twins is finally coming to an end. I applaud his one great year and still cringe at the unnecessary contract extension.
  4. Buxton should still be doing a rehab assignment in AAA. He is completely lost at the plate. I'd also say it's time to give Nick Gordon a shot at SS. It's hard to score when your lineup has 4 guys who are complete non threats at the plate.
  5. I think the more likely scenario is Escobar is brought back to play 3B with Gordon at SS, Polanco at 2B, and Sano at 1B. Based on Escobar's play since the middle of last season, a more interesting question is would the Twins give Escobar a qualifying offer this off-season ($17M one year offer that gets the Twins a compensation draft pick if he leaves)?
  6. People wanting May as a starter was mainly due to two factors. First, May had health issues as a reliever that have to some extent been blamed on the unpredictability and frequency of relief appearances. The other main reason is that until this season May had better stuff than all but a couple of the guys that were starting for the Twins (Santana and Berrios).
  7. Santana's at least 3-4 weeks away which could easily be longer if the Twins rotation is going strong. I'd guess there's a moderate chance one of our current starters goes on the DL before then (in which case there's no problem). If all 5 starters are healthy and pitching well when Santana comes back it's a problem I'm overjoyed to have.
  8. I know they felt like they had to give Hughes one last chance, but those 2 starts of Hughes really wasted what might be limited Romero innings (by leaving him in AAA).
  9. Dozier is one of the most extreme hot/cold guys I can remember. He goes long stretches one way or the other and it's really painful when he's stuck in a month plus cold stretch.
  10. For the first time in 12 years (Santana/Liriano in 2006) I think the Twins might have a legitimate front of the rotation.
  11. I'd really like to see both Gordon and Wade get their first chance. It makes a lot more sense to me to give them development time than to give ABs to Grossman, Adrianza, LaMarre, or Petit. Gordon/Wade likely wouldn't stick in the majors, but they could get valuable experience while almost certainly not being worse than the guys that are currently playing.
  12. A lot of the Twins better prospects go straight from AA to the majors. Wade has over 500 ABs at AA with more BB than SO, I'd say he's likely ready for a major league call-up.
  13. Pulling Gibson just because he got to 100 pitches bothers me. He was dominant today and should have been given the chance to get out of the inning. Instead Duke comes in and gives up the game tying hit.
  14. I feel bad for Gibson. He's pitched a great game but gets burned on a wild pitch/passed ball and Grossman's defensive limitations.
  15. Grossman's defense has a tangible negative impact again. Any remotely decent outfielder would have limited that hit to a single. That's a run scored entirely on Grossman's poor fielding.
  16. If Wade hit right handed, the Twins outfield would be set through the 2021 season. As it is, Minnesota needs to find a right handed bat who is least an average corner outfielder.
  17. Grossman is fine as a bench bat, occasional DH, and once a week outfielder (who gets pulled late in games for a better defender). The problem comes when he has to play significant innings in the outfield. The Twins problem isn't so much having Grossman on the team, it's not having a defensively capable outfielder to fill in when one of the regulars goes down.
  18. I've been really curious what Garver could do as the everyday catcher, I guess we now get to find out. The scary part of the situation is the complete lack of catching prospects above low A.
  19. Twins bullpen 4-8 in win-loss record and 3-8 in saves vs save opportunities. It's going to be hard to be in the playoff race if our relief pitchers can't turn things around.
  20. I don't think Rodney or Duke are in any danger. The worst I could see happening is Rodney losing his exclusive closer role. Of the 6 bullpen guys I listed the only ones that are even remotely in question are Rogers/Hildenberg and based on their track records they are going to get a long leash.
  21. I really can't see Hughes making it to the All-Star break. He's almost certainly out of the rotation for good and is only likely to hang on to the long relief mop up roll until a couple of the young guys have success at the MLB level. The bullpen has 6 guys set (Rodney, Reed, Duke, Pressly, Hildenberger, and Rogers) leaving one or two spots. At some point a couple of guys out of Busenitz, Curtiss, Duffey, Moya, Reed, Anderson, Bard, and Baxendale will stick in the majors (not to mention May coming back).
  22. I think if the guys in the Twins bullpen were pitching better Hughes would be waived. Since the bullpen only has a couple of guys (Pressly and Reed) pitching well, Hughes will get a chance to show if he can be better than the other poorly performing bullpen options.
  23. I really liked what I saw from Romero, but he needs to get ahead in the count more often to have consistent success. He reminded me of Berrios in 2016, he obviously has great stuff, but needs trust it and throw strikes. Berrios also struggled a bit with being aggressive early in the count when he first came up.
  24. I really thought it would take at least 2-3 more poor starts (or even more if Hughes managed a semi-decent start) before the Twins would give up on Hughes as a starter. I'm also surprised that Romero is getting a chance, I figured we'd have to cycle through Sledgers and Enns (and Mejia if healthy) before Romero/Gonsalves would get a shot.
  25. In the off-season the Twins roster decisions on their high upside relief prospects were highly questionable (leaving Burdi unprotected, waiving Chargois while he still had options, and keeping Kinley). The one decision that did make sense was to leave Bard unprotected. I'm glad to see that decision worked out in the Twins favor.
