  1. People often need personal stories to connect with a larger situation. For those of us with toddlers or those that have raised toddlers, it doesn’t really get more personal than that photo.
  2. My foster daughter turns 22 months old in three days. The blood boils. I can't even type, my hands are shaking.
  3. Interesting. Is this a rule in baseball contracts or just the Scherzer deal? If this is correct, that changes things quite a bit. The Twins wouldn’t owe Scherzer any additional money until... 2025, I think?
  4. Frankly, I’d almost prefer two good relievers but I’m certainly not going to complain about a good reliever and a good starter instead.
  5. All for the low, low price of ~$120m for 2.5 seasons of play. For Scherzer to even be considered, a lot of money will have to come along with him because Washington structured his contract to make it all but untradeable. He doesn’t even get half of his 2015 paycheck until 2022. And half his 2016 paycheck until 2023. Continue for seven years.
  6. It depends on the definition of “some” but I’m not entirely against the deal in theory, just against a straight trade because it’s unrealistic. And the deferred money is not only half of his 2019-forward salaries. It’s an extra $15m every year he played for the Nats, too. Oh, and his $50m signing bonus appears to be spread out over the entire contract. So that’s another $15-35m tacked on depending on the details of the bonus, which are vaguely written in reports (it’s unclear whether $50m is spread over seven or 14 years). It starts to add up, doesn’t it?
  7. Go get them both. The Twins need a a good arm with bullpen experience and another good starter never hurts.
  8. Negative. To even contemplate such a deal with that kind of prospect haul leaving Minnesota, the Nationals would have to pay most/all of Scherzer's contract and they're incredibly unlikely to do that. His contract details are absolutely bonkers. He has roughly $500 trillion coming in deferred money through 2028 (only a slight exaggeration). https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/washington-nationals/max-scherzer-5166/
  9. Any team can knock out another team once the postseason begins. In the past four seasons, a Division Series has been played 16 times. The lower-seeded team has won six times (37.5% of the time), including the Wild Card winner three times (also 37.5% of the time). People really underestimate how unpredictable baseball is over five or seven games.
  10. Yikes. 26 years old and all of 10.0 MLB IP in his career.
  11. Astudillo rarely makes things look pretty but he does an okay job of getting it done.
  12. Yeah, I never get this take on expiring players. The likelihood of a team needing a second baseman rental while also having expendable pitching (really, there's no such thing down the stretch in baseball) is microscopic.
  13. Assuming no trades or injuries change the landscape, I'm moderately comfortable using Arraez to start the 2020 season with a back-up of Gonzalez and/or Gordon if things go south. Mid-market teams need to roll the dice like this on occasion so you can spend money filling positions of larger need.
  14. Pizza Ranch, for the win.
  15. 1. Longoria is owed a lot more than $25m. Doing the math in my head (and deducting the $2m per season paid by Tampa) so the numbers might be off by a couple of million, his contract will cost between $55m-60m at minimum (assuming the team opts to buy out that last season and not keep him aboard). 2. Not much. Forsythe only made $9m that year so the Twins took on $4m, tops. I vaguely recall it was less than that but can't remember the specifics. Not enough to really move the needle, basically.
  16. If the larger size included time spent demoted in AAA and the conversation is about how the well the guy is playing today, yes, the smaller sample size is the one to use. Since returning to Minnesota, Astudillo has started three games and played in four games, accruing 13 plate appearances. His slash is: .308 .308 .538 .846 Super small sample size there but he's been just fine since the recall.
  17. The price would have to bottom out to take on that contract.
  18. This is a great example of how lazy reporting runs rampant through our institutions. https://arstechnica.com/science/2019/06/debunked-the-absurd-story-about-smartphones-causing-kids-to-sprout-horns/
  19. No worries, if it's incorrect, any of us could have fallen for it. We'll just wait it out and if we ultimately deem it inaccurate, we'll lock the thread.
  20. Yeah, this is a little surprising because he wasn't playing badly. Oh well, also not something I'm going to get worked up about. He'll be back.
  21. I fully agree, at least certainly in baseball, which has much more variance game-over-game (for example, on any given night it would not be surprising to see the Orioles beat the Astros).
  22. Great teams are "great" largely because of sequencing and luck. Or do you think the 91 Twins were great out of sheer determination? Because that's not actual reality. Literally one lucky bounce and a deke determined that entire championship.
  23. Last I saw, Astudillo graded roughly average as a catcher and marginally sub-par in the field outside playing catcher. If that guy hits, he's a useful player. I'm saying this as a person who is NOT an Astudillo fan, just a person who wants the Twins to field the best team they can.
