5 Players the Twins Can Deal Before the Trade Deadline

Twins got Jhoan Duran in the Eduardo Escobar trade a couple years back. Hasn't done anything for the Twins yet, but he's predicted to start contributing shortly.

Just off the top of my head, I think trading Ryan Pressley for Jorge Alcalá and Gilberto Celestino in July 2018 could end up looking pretty good, assuming Alcalá continues to develop into a reliable late-innings reliever.

It is a little early to start looking to sell everything.  Our team can perform much better than they have.  So many teams have gone on long runs this year both winning and losing, it has been a crazy year in baseball for that.  We could go on a long winning streak or winning even 8 out of 10 type streaks to get back into it.  

That being said, if we do not start to turn around quickly, I would look to sell any piece that you can get a decent return on that you do not plan to bring back next year.  Buck and Berrios I would hold off until off-season to see if you can bring back, they both have a full year after this so teams will still look to take them in trades.  You will not lose a ton of value for waiting in my opinion.  

Pineda could fetch a nice return and Rodgers could bring back maybe a piece.  Cruz, he will have limited landing spots being he will only DH, but if you can get a prospect back and you are out of the hunt do it.

If this is just about shedding salary, meh.  I don't care about how fat the owner's wallets are, I care about the team's ability to compete in the future, and yes that includes finishing out the year respectably.  I get it that when a team is doing poorly, for some people their minds automatically go into sell mode.  But what kind of player return would the Twins get?  I honestly can't remember a good return the Twins got in one of these trades, though I admit I don't keep track of how every player came to the club.

It just simply never happens where a team sheds 20% of their salary one year and adds that to the budget in the next year, so I admit I don't see the point unless a good player comes back to the team in the trade. 

Guardado for Mark Hamburger

Escobar for Liriano

Duran for Escobar. Marciel is still a prospect

Little for Garcia was useful

David Ortiz was a PTBNL deadline deal

Joe Mays for Roberto Kelly

Bobby Kielty brought back Stewart. He wasn’t a prospect but did have a couple of good years

Cruz, Pineda, Duffy, Rogers, Happ and Simmons are no-brainers if we're out of it in July.

Trading Berrios and/or Buxton is giving up on 2022, which there's no reason to do. I only trade them in July 2022 if next season also falls apart. I'd try to get Berrios signed to an extension though. Buxton is an impossible quandary.

Doesn't look like its gonna happen . This team has no fire in its belly. Somebody (Donaldson or Cruz) should have held a players meeting by now. Errors, bad baserunning, not moving runners over, terrible relief pitching and a manager with seemingly no clue....

Toronto would be a great fit for Cruz.

I’d much rather trade Donaldson if it means being able to resign Berrios and/or Buxton. Not sure how many teams would be willing to take on his contract, though. But I’m also in the camp that any player on an expiring contract should be gone. Cruz is the only one I’d particularly want to resign anyways and he still might be willing to do it depending on how things go with where he gets traded.
