Deduno May Need Surgery

GM Terry Ryan said on Sunday that the Twins will evaluate and make a decision on whether or not pitcher Samuel Deduno will require surgery on his shoulder, writes the Star Tribune’s Lavelle Neal.

"‘We’re making a decision on the severity of this thing and whether or not there’s a possibility of a scope,’’ Ryan said.

Deduno recently has seen a specialist and has had a magnetic resonance imaging exam on his shoulder. Indications are that he’s still battling some inflammation and that there is some fraying in the area. Ryan, however, maintained that the problem is scar tissue-related.

‘‘It is more favorable than we thought,’’ Ryan said.

Deduno, arguably the team’s most effective starter with an ERA+ of 107, has not pitched since August 29thwhen he went just three innings in Kansas City and left the game early due to shoulder soreness. Ryan also said there is a possibility of Deduno pitching in the winter leagues in the Dominican again however that decision would be left entirely up to him.

Deduno will be under club control for the 2014 season.

The possibility of surgery and the possibility of pitching in the Domincan Winter League don't seem to mesh. Obviously if he needs surgery winter league should be off the table, but if surgery is ruled out and R&R is perscribed, wouldn't you want him avoiding pitching this offseason?

How the Twins handle Deduno will actually be a pretty good indicator of how they will look at building the starting rotation for 2014. This is not a good time to be 30ish, a AAAA type etc., with any sort of arm problems. Going into the 2013 season, the rotation was in such shambles, they really had no place to start. Next year they can start with Correia, Gibson, Diamond/Albers and if he finishes strongly Pelfrey may even enter the conversation. The Twins are not going to ring the bell next season. Finding 5 healthy starters who can take the ball every five days and stopping the shuttle between Rochester and Target Field may well be enough for next season.

Aren't shoulder problems pretty difficult to diagnose even with MRI's? I wont become too overly optimistic about his future going forward until he throws at least 50 effective innings next season. Part of the reason is his pitch to contact game (and his almost half career norm HR/FB rate). He is due for regression to begin with, a shoulder problem isn't going to help.

How many times does a surgeon simply do just a scope, it's often the case that once they're in there, they start doing extra-surgeony things

We need to recruit an actual doctor to the board. There must be doctor-Twins fans. Where's Stat these days anyway?
