If Mauer is done catching does he make the HOF?

I think that nonsense is almost entirely "local." Every fanbase has a certain number of people who simply get off on being contrary and they'll chip away at the best player(s) on the local team just to get attention and try to impress people with how "smart" they are. Those with knowledge of the game, even BBWAA members, know better.

Ooooooh. I'm not touching that one. Don't want to get banned. :P

I think it would be easier to create scenarios where Joe Mauer doesn't make the hall. If his career completely ended right now he would likely get the Puckett treatment since he was an elite player while in the majors. If he is good but not great at 1B for another 6-8 seasons he will go in based on elite accomplishments and decent counting stats.

The scenario where he might not go in is if he doesn't continue to hit well or play catcher but still plays. 4-6 seasons of .265/.350/.375 could bring down his averages without padding the counting stats enough. I don't think it's possible for Mauer to hit .265 though.

If the people electing him are not the commenters on the Star Trib webpage or from a certain radio station message board he has a good chance of making it. When I hear the national sports people talk about him it is usually in glowing term both for his play and his off the field persona. He kind of gets criticized here for being too even-keeled and nice, but I think the national sports people appreciate not having to deal with another over blown ego (although I suspect they would like better sound bytes...). Not that being nice or not nice should have anything to do with it (Ty Cobb), but if you are a borderline case it probably helps.

I think it would help if he played catcher part time a couple more years, but if he could play good first base for a number of years and add to some of his totals, he has a good chance.

Mr. Mauer should not even be considered to make HOF unless he can lead his team to one or more World Series appearances or wins. He has had his best opportunities for that already and he shriveled like a raisin - so he may be out of luck. All (or vast majority) of the HOF catchers were leaders of men, and of their teams, and were instrumental in helping their respective organizations obtain the only objective of the game - to win World Series titles (or at a minimum - get to the pinnacle of the game). Joe Mauer has not, nor will he, lead your favorite team the World Series.

Now, Joe Mauer is surely a fine contact hitter. However, putting a boy, who often prefers drawing a walk with men on base, over smashing the damned ball through the gap,.....into the HOF next to Men including the likes of Campanella, Berra, Bench, Dickey, Fisk would be a travesty in my opinion. These fellas got it done for their clubs and helped lead them to the promised-land.

Joe Mauer often seems content to not lead, to not get fired up when the team needs it, to not perform in a clutch manner during his playoff opportunities, and to not play what one would consider full seasons.

If the HOF selection criteria were these below - he would be a shoe in:

-playing an average of 127 games a season

-hitting 9 singles during his playoff at bats - of his 10 hits

-driving in one run during his 9 playoff games (9 games in three playoff series of course means three sweeps)

-smiling, looking quite content, flaunting a milk moustache, and seeking to be walked as his team loses 90+ games

-collect and pad over-analyzed stats in meaningless games that help the team to nowhere but into oblivion

-accepting $23 Million annually to provide the above type of leadership performance

-and, potentially becoming a first baseman (eeew!) with the above qualities

Not a native of this state and not a fan of the Twins so I can observe him without homer-driven emotion. I made a simple $100 bet with a friend (desperate Twins Homer)many years ago that the Twins will not win, nor visit, the World Series as long as this milk-drinking boy-catcher is on the Twins. Easy money.....

These are just my opinions, and Go Cards !

PS - This a good forum and over the past few years it has been fun to monitor it as the Twins suffer from self inflicted stupidity - thank you. I use your suffering as a bit of revenge for 1987, which cannot be forgiven. At least we lost to a team that year with some balls....unlike the Twins of the last 20 years.

Have a great day

Yeah. Damn Mauer for imploding on the mound against the Yankees all those years. If only he had pounded his mitt more aggressively while yelling "GO GET EM, BOYS" the Twins would have multiple championships by now.

And it's not exactly fair to point out that Joe has one extra base hit in the postseason because PHIL CUZZI.

The only travesty is the stupidity of this post. Criticizing someone because they have a likable personality? Really? Would you prefer he was a raging alcoholic like Cabrera was a few years ago?

Name one player who has single handedly lead his team to a World Series. You can't. There are 8 other hitters and multiple pitchers involved.

In case you're unaware, Mauer is a catcher. Catchers don't play 162 games a season.

I don't even know why I bothered responding to this post.

I bet this guy loves Yadi Molina, even though Molina has only just barely begun to put up the stats that Mauer has for almost 10 years. The Cards are a model organization, but their success has started with the pitching. Blaming everything on Mauer is the most homer statement I've heard from someone who claims to be a fan of another organization. On the other hand, what a weird topic for a fan of another team to chime in on.

I also don't understand why people blame Mauer for his contract. It's like it's money out of their pocket. It's not like it's his contract that's stopping the front office from spending more money. The Twins should have given him an Evan Longoria type deal long before his 2009 season, but that's the Twins fault, not Mauer's.

Every year he plays to his average helps him, no matter where. Helps if he wins another batting title (although as long as he remains in the Top 5 that is a plus). Besides, he's a good guy!

You responded because you are insecure about your favorite ballclub, mad because they have lied to you about building a winner, selling hope with new revenues from a nice new park only to give you the same old cheapskate front office and ownership, selling bitter-tasting, milk-flavored, Mauer Kool-Aid to the glazed-eyed homers to keep the masses pacified. It is a sad statement if the greatest hope for an organization is if one their local-yokels can make the HOF .....where only influential catchers should go. You simply get mad when the curtains are lifted to expose the lack of influential excellence joe actually brings to the diamond.

Joe is a nice boy, he sells milk and ice creams, but he does not win, nor will he ever.

uh.....when slappy joe moves to 1B, I am pretty sure you would rather have Miggy....and if you don't, you are silly.

have a great day

Re-read your post, then consider these facts:

- Yadi will never make the HOF

- Yadi will never have the all important stats of Joe-the-slappy.

-Yadi makes under 10Million/yr

- in the 2006 NLDS, NLCS, and WS, Yadi had 19 hits, including 4 doubles and 2 dingers, and 8 RBI - the Cards won the series (OMG - Yadi was a negative WAR that season - omg omg)

- in the 2011 NLDS, NLCS, and WS, Yadi had 20 hits, including 5 doubles, and 12 RBI - the Cards won the series that year as well

- Yadi has two world series rings on his stubby little fingers

- had joe mauer stepped up a bit during his opportunities in the playoffs, like Mr. Molina, maybe you folks would have enjoyed a bit more real success - instead of having to worry about trivialities such as whether someone gets into the HOF.

I chime in because I have lived in MN for 20 years and have been subjected to the ridiculous mauer hype for 10 years.....and I simply find it nauseatingly funny how the local team fans gobble him up even though he has the true impact of a marsmallow. joe sure has great stats...but he does not belong in the HOF, with a bust next to Johnny Bench.....ick....have a great day!

Slappy Joe?

Seriously. If you're going to post crap like that, go troll another board. Stop intentionally aggravating other posters, including myself.

I have posted nothing but facts - why so mad?

OP asked for opinions on HOF consideration for joe - I answered with my opinions- why so mad?
