You heard wrong.

Officially there is no such thing. The MLB rule book makes no mention of check swing. None.

A swinging strike is "an attempt to hit the ball"

I do appreciate your point about the lack of a rulebook definition.

Isn’t the “plane of the plate” standard *by far* the most commonly recognized though?

I certainly haven’t heard another one. Sure, maybe it wouldn’t have to apply to certain crazy swings, like the batter offering way up high on an eephus pitch. But there is room for ambiguity in many replay review already…

Feels kind of akin to the period before a new word is in the dictionary but after it becomes commonplace in speech and text…

I remember back in the day where the evidence for a check swing strike was whether or not the batter “broke his wrists”.

It was a 1-2 count so even more egregious that he threw a middle middle pitch.  He had two pitches to waste to try to get him out.  Also, walking a faster equivalent of Vazquez's batting skills didn't help the situation.

Agreed, what happened to his vaunted out pitch sweeper. He didn’t throw it once in that at bat.  Maybe he was afraid of throwing it away with a runner on third. I don’t know, but he should’ve went with his strength in that situation I believe.

Jax should have went after Ruiz instead of trying to make him chase something, he obviously wasn't swinging, especially after ball 2.

It would have been a highlight reel catch had Bader made it, looked like the ball, the glove, and the ground all met at the same time.

Route?

Bottom line - The Twins are not a very good team. 81 wins is a goal with 85 and a playoff spot a dream. This is clearly preferable to what Colorado Rockies fans endure, for sure. Is it enough for you?

BS. Trades are never made on the very last performance. Never. Whatever the value is, it is still there in whole.

Never and always.

I remember a 4 man rotation and a 15 inch mound.

Water, however vague the rules may be dejure, having watched baseball for "a vast amount of" years...that's a frickin' strike defacto! I think, either consciously or unconsciously, the fact that the call would have resulted in the end of the game may have had a part to play in the no-call. It's a sad ending, but the Twins played very well against one of MLB's best for the second day in a row. What a strange team and what a strange year...

Betts is a superstar. LA is the superpower. I came away from the "no swing" call with the same conclusion. I replayed it a couple of times. 100 out of 100 times that is called a swing ..... in a different inning.

Nevertheless, Ruiz is as close to an automatic out as the Dodgers roster. Jax has a terrific fastball and he throws a 3-0 sweeper for strike one. Ruiz was not swinging until he got to 2 strikes. Brain freeze.

The Twins played hard, played to win versus the Dodgers. Keirsey Jr. steals second and third base base. The Twins haven't even attempted a single steal of third base until yesterday. Agree about the Twins being a strange team. Effort and concentration was good in the last 3 games. Where was that against the Rockies? Pirates? What will we see this weekend?
