David HK Verified Member Posted March 23, 2023 Posted March 23, 2023 I sent a customer "service" email to mlb just now. Maybe I'm just another old fuddy-duddy, but dammit, I'm PO'd about their ridiculous idea of hiding the box score. I thought maybe it was just a spring-training tryout glitch, but I'm worried they're going to carry through with this nonsense all year. I can get more of a sense of how the game went by a quick peruse through the box, something I've done since I was in short pants. OK, I sometimes still wear short pants, but what the heck? It's beyond ridiculous that I have to 1) search through the page to even find the link to the box, then 2) find it squeezed down one side, only one team at a time, and have to access 2 different page sliders to get through the whole thing! I want the whole thing displayed in one swoop! Maybe even both teams side by side! There's plenty of room on the page for that- and that's what they've always done in the past. FFS, I understand trying to reach casual folks with pretty pix, graphics and viddys. But what's the problem simply displaying a whole box score for the old folks- especially when that's what we've selected to do? Of course, I don't expect even a simple response from them, I never get one. But if anyone knows a site where they still display it like the old daze, post it, would you? And maybe send them an email, too, and we can gang up on 'em. Here's my text: What is up with your squeezing the box score onto a little side margin of the page, where I have to use 2 different sliders to view the whole thing?!? Why do you insist on displaying huge video links that I've already declined to see- or perhaps have already watched. When I click to see a box score, I want the whole thing, readily displayed! Don't you give a rip about your long-time fans? Did you even ask anyone if this is what they want? Go ahead, give the casual fan the pretty pictures, but when we click on the box, get rid of them! You guys are ridiculous- not only a bunch of nonsense new "rules," but completely dissing the very people who have supported you year in and year out. I've been a fan since the '65 Twins, and an annual mlbtv subscriber, but it seems that since you've already got my money, you don't have to care! Get in the game!

Definitely a little "old man yells at clouds" here, but we all have our things that upset us so I'll try to help out a little. Fangraphs usually has a pretty straight forward box score. They don't do them for spring training games so I can't promise they haven't changed them, but here's an example: Baseball reference also has one, but it's got a little extra data on it: Those are the 2 most basic that come to my mind
waltomeal Verified Member Posted March 23, 2023 Posted March 23, 2023 David and Fox Mulder get it. Box scores on newsprint are magical. The only scene of the only episode of the X-Files I have any memory of.
IndianaTwin Verified Member Posted March 23, 2023 Posted March 23, 2023 Box scores are a thing of beauty. When I think of all the magical things about this game, I don’t know why I’ve never thought of the joy of trying to decode names like “WdsRchsn” and “Clstno” in 6-point agate. I”m guessing when I first saw, “Hrbek, 1b,” I thought his name was something like “Heartbeck.”
