The roster purge begins

The Twins will drop to 39 or 40 at the end of the Series when their two or three free agents leave the roster.  They will then need to make additional moves to create space for the five or six prospects that need to be added and open spots for the handful of free agents they sign.  Much of the work has been done, but they were the easy moves.  Going forward there will be some difficult decisions, some of which will have us shaking our heads.

The roster is at 42 right now (including the 60 day IL guys).

Pending free agents Simmons and Pineda will be automatically removed at the same time that the 60-day IL guys are reinstated, so they're basically at 40 already. (Declining Colomé's option would further drop it to 39.)

The next date to watch is Friday November 19th -- that's the deadline this year for adding minor leaguers or leaving them exposed to the Rule 5 draft in December.

It is all about dropping guys for necessary roster spots. Lewis, Miranda, Winder, Sands, maybe Enlow.

Smeltzer, Stashak, Thorpe are BIG decisions. (I would get rid of two of these).

You can trim the outfield. Garlick probably gone, Refsnyder also. Cave on the bubble. Rooker a possibility if you sign a free agent. (I would egt rid of two of these, possibly three.)

Astudillo is not necessary. (Filler for now, gone if you sign a quality free agent).

Thielbar or Coulombe are not necessary if you sign another quality lefty. (Both could be keepers).

Jax and Garza could be on the bubble. Gone if you sign a free agent starter and a quality bullpen arm).

I see no reason to keep Dobnak on the 40-man. No team will claim his contract, or if they do, are you crying tears? He can still remain Twins property. (Gone especially if you sign or trade for a quality starter).

You don't need to remove ALL of the above, only 3-4-5 at most, and then jettison others if you sign free agents or claim some minor league free agent better than that particular person.

If the Twins are truly going to compete, stay away from the Rule 5. Also, stay away from minor league free agents that need a 40-man roster spot. I look back and AAA/AA were filled with non-Twin prospects last year.

If you aren't competing, look for that Rule 5, yes. But I would also closely look at who on the roster CAN actually contribute in plus ways in 2022.

I think you keep Stashak, but there is no reason to keep Smeltzer or Thorpe.

Garlick, Refsnyder, and Cave should all be gone (Buxton, Kepler, Kiriloff, Larnach, Arraez, Celestino, Martin/Lewis) is plenty of outfielders, not to mention you can easily find a Garlick/Ref/Cave clone in Feb/March if you really need to

Agree on Astudillo

Thielbar 100% needs to be kept--he'll barely cost anything, had a very solid year last year, and is a lefty.  If Rogers isn't healthy/is not on the roster, he might be your only lefty.  Even if Rogers is here and pitching, having Thielbar to match up against lefties in the 6th/7th allows you to keep Rogers for truly high leverage situations.  Coulombe can be gone.

I'd like to keep Jax and Garza if possible, particularly Jax as a guy who can pitch 2-3 innings in games you're winning/losing by 3 or more to save the bullpen.  If he can be more, that's a bonus.

Dobnak would 100% be claimed if waived.  The Rays/A's would be all over him, as would any other team looking to fill out a rotation.  He has a career 4.42 FIP, and is owed less than $9M over the next 4 years.  Waive Dobnak, and he'll play for someone else, without question.

Since the Twins are essentially already at 40, losing Smeltzer, Thorpe, Garlick, Ref, and Cave should leave you with enough room to add the MiLBers you need to protect.  After that, you can cut Astudillo, Coulombe, Garcia, and Jax if you're signing someone better than them, otherwise they stay.
