Neal: Berrios Is Impressing People

La Velle E Neal posted some ravings about 18-year-old Jose Berrios yesterday morning.

The guy looks like a clubhouse attendant when he walks around. But he has grown man stuff. His fastball is around 93 miles an hour, and it's not out the question that he finds another mph or two. And he has a good curveball and isn't afraid to throw a change.

``You can hear the ball buzzing as it comes in,'' catcher Ryan Doumit said between pitches.

Berrios and Kyle Gibson have been the most impressive through two days of b.p.

There are some other quotes about him too.

In November, 2012, Baseball America predicted that in 2016, our ace would be Gibson and our #2 would be Berrios. We'll see how that works out.

Raves != ravings. You had me wondering at first. :P

Number one starter in the Twins (and a lot of other teams) is not the same as an Ace, since Santana was traded...

I never said it was...but fine, #1. I think the point was clear, all semantics aside.

No negative comments....don't worry the thread is young!

Couldn't this comment itself be construed as a negative?

I cannot wait to see the kid next month in Fort Myers. One thing I am puzzled about is that 93 mph. After he was drafted I do remember the scouting reports saying that his fastball (four seamer) was 92-95. And reports from E-town were similar. Of course, it is Spring and he might not be pitching all out yet, but still surprised.

I'm a little relieved to hear the positive reviews. When I interviewed Terry Ryan for the Handbook, he downplayed Berrios a little, saying he didn't have a great instructional league, and I wondered if there had been some issues. This is reassuring.
