To me the interesting part is numbers #11 - 20. I'm a little surprised to find JR Chargois at the top of that list. They're convinced he's staying a reliever. Are we?

 

He has a plus fastball to go along with a solid average, if not better, breaking ball. He also has a changeup that might be above-average. He doesn’t have pinpoint command, but he doesn’t have to in short relief. The Twins rave about his makeup and he could be a quick riser to the big leagues.

I haven't heard any scouts or team execs say they think Chargois has a realistic chance to be a starter. However, he looks like a fast riser who could make an impact in the bullpen very quickly, which would make him a nice draft pick and a justifiably high-rated prospect.

In the past when checking out MLB.com's team by team prospect lists it has always seemed like they are not shy about ranking relief pitchers quite high.

If 5 is average, why did they give Sano a current power grade of 5? 28 home runs for a 19-year old in low A is above average in my opinion.

 

Arcia is a 4 (below average) for power and hit. .928 OPS for goodness sakes!

At least this list implies a certain level of competence for whoever made it. The list from about two weeks ago....Woof!

Wouldn't we want someone to take over the closer role quickly? (like a college reliever) So that Perk can resume his awesomeness as a set-up guy?

I know its off the 11-20 topic, but a 60 grade on Hick's arm is a lot lower than I've seen elsewhere.

Its a 1-7 grading scale, not a 20-80 scale.

I'm not so sure. It does say 2-8 at the bottom of each page...

Chargois isn't a candidate to start. It's odd to use 2-8 ratings instead of 20-80, since the half-steps are important (e.g., 65 rather than 6 or 7). Overall they don't look like a ton of thought went into them.

Yeah, you're right. I am wrong. Weird. Well, I wouldn't give those ratings much creedence, since Hicks is most definitely a 70 arm, or 7. Whatever.

He's at a 7 for power potential. Evidently they think his bat would play at 5 for power if he was currently in teh bigs.

This list is much more just Mayo's, which is a good thing. I was chatting with him while he was working on it a couple of nights ago. Had some good, fun discussions. JT Chargois will certainly be working out of the bullpen. He hasn't pitched a whole lot and he has potentially two very dominant pitches. That means he could move up quite quickly. The Twins definitely like his arm, as they like all of the guys they took in 2012. Only real surprises on the list are Corey Williams and Ryan Pressly, in my opinion.

MLB.com just isn't a great site for prospect rankings or evaluation. I'm not the first or last to say it, but there is a lot of stuff that most would disagree with. They put absolutely no value on position and seem to always be higher on players closer to the majors (which isn't the worst thing).

Yep - BA Missed that one. I assumed he was on there. Can't leave off a guy who throws 100 and makes it work for him and the team.

Most lists ive seen have had chargios pretty high. His floor seems to be a formidable late inning guy. The floor on alot of pitchers is more loe not maoing it out of the minors.
