Official Wild Card Game Roster

What other hitter would you want on there anyway?

I think Sano would be more helpful than Mejia.

If Sano really is too far removed from game shape to be useful, even as a pinch hitter, the Twins should have planned for that possibility and activated Matt Hague for September.

Think about it. What happens if Escobar gets hurt? Adrianza is at third with Giminez as his back up. That is poor roster construction. It’s a failure on the part of the FO to adequately plan.

I’ll turn it around and ask, what is Mejia’s role? Long man? Okay. Already have Gee, Berrios and Duffey. How many long relievers do you need for one game? Lefty specialist? Okay. Umm, hmmm. That’s fine except that Mejia has gotten MLB RHB out better than LHB. He really has no discernible split in terms of OPS, but LHB are slightly better.

Then Matt Hague should have been activated and given a trial.

I, too, prefer levity over critiquing events that have not yet happened.

11 pitchers seems like overkill. I would have had Sano on the bench just in case. I'd rather have him as a PH then Vargas, Garver etc

I agree with you for once  :).  If the Twins get down to Gee and Boshers they already lost.  I would rather have a pinch hitter like Sano in there for the chance at a heroic game changing at bat, instead of Boshers and Gee in to mop up a blow out.

About 4 (at least) pitchers that it would be a sorry state to go to at all...... and no Sano. Anybody can strike out. But not everyone can change a game so drastically with one swing like Sano can. Color me pissed!

The roster is what it was and we will rely on the starting nine. I have a hard time seeing many scenarios where we will be pinch hitting. People putting these decisions on Paul Molitor are funny, the FO has more pull than he does on setting the roster. With that said, they have been successful in the postseason with Cleveland so I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they are smarter than us average fans. Go Twins!

Gee has been pretty good out of the bullpen so i can see him getting in the game when it is somewhat close.  We just have limited options and I trust him over Duffey, Meija, Boshers, and maybe even Pressley.  Doesn't instill a lot of confidence for sure beyond the top 3 or 4 out of the bullpen.  Hoping Big Erv pitches 7 or 8 innings.

OK but who is Matt Hague? I looked him up and you're kind of proving my point.

Matt Hague is he of the .789 OPS across a full season at Triple-A. I thought that the mention of his name was a joke at first, but I guess not. I don't think the Twins will miss him tonight.

So, who pinch hits for Castro when he is facing Chapman in the 9th and a one run game? That seems like a tailor made situation for Sano to pinch hit and a situation that makes sense to plan for in a one game playoff.

The staff must like Garver over Sano in a one AB situation against a lefty.

I can think of about 5 off the top of my head.

1) Tie Game nobody on - Two outs

2) Down 1 run Nobody on - Two outs

3) Up by 2 bases loaded in 9th with 0 or 1 outs

4) Down by 2 runner on in 8th or 9th

5) Grossman injured

The quicker Santana is pulled from the game the less likely we are to win anyway. He has to go seven at minimum for us to even have a chance, imo.

There are seven guys in that bullpen that I really hope do not pitch.

I am also going to state that if Molitor tries to match up and takes Erv out with under 110 pitches and less than three runs allowed I am going to just blow a gasket.

That .789 OPS ranked 8th in the IL this year among qualifiers.

No one is claiming he is the second Miguel Sano. But, yeah, he’s by far the best bat the Twins had in AAA after Garver. And yes, I think he would definitely have helped more tonight than Adalberto Mejia is likely to.

Agree to disagree, but I think you're over estimating any impact he may have had. Garver was a monster at Triple-A, and he hasn't been very impressive in the Majors. One could argue he's only on the WC roster in case something goes horribly wrong with the first two catchers.

Hague has been maybe less impressive in his brief MLB stints. I suppose anyone could lay into one on a given pitch, but I have a hard time thinking Hague is any more likely to do so than the guys they're bringing to New York. To me, this just feels like criticism for the sake of criticism. If Hague was called up, then why not Palka? If Palka, then why not Wade? Etc.

The difference being that Hague has MLB experience AND hits right handed AND can play third base.

Well, they already have Escobar, Adrianza, and Polanco. If tonight they come up one guy short who has MLB experience and hits right handed and can play third base, then we'll know who they should have called up thirty-three days ago.

11 pitchers is beyond dumb IMO.

Notice the Yankees have only 10.

Paul Molitor. Outmanaged, 10 hours before the first pitch.

Doesn't the FO assemble the roster?
