he's of negative value on the field. -1 < 0

That assumes that WAR is measuring his value correctly.  Posnanski has had a couple articles the last few years that suggest 1) teams have internal WAR systems that are better than fangraphs and 2) public WAR data is pretty flimsy.

Kepler mentioned Molitor said he'll be hitting second against righties on a regular basis.

Man, Molitor is aggressive with this lineup. I still question Buxton at third but I appreciate the aggressiveness.

Agreed. I don't think Buxton will stay up there much longer but it's a fun lineup to watch.  Rosario took a few walks today, Sano is crushing it.  My guess is they'll drop Buxton and simply move everyone up one but that would put two lefties (Kepler/Mauer) back to back.

value is what you make of it.

I would buy that MLB teams have a valuation system to weight players relative to others like WAR that suits their needs better than Fangraphs does.

I don't however agree that Fangraphs or BBref are flimsy considering that WAR is relative valuation. It's relative

I understand that. My statement is not about his value, but the need for the team to justify his inclusion on a very short bench. We cannot just keep, pay and hide players. We are already doing that with Haley. But Santana has to either show the management is right or the TD readers are right. There is no value otherwise. I would not have kept him, but they did so they have to play him.

if he's negative value in the field but has 0 value on the bench, his value to Molitor might be anticipatory value. He's insurance, best when you don't have to use it, but really glad to have it when you need it.

Peace of mind has value too
