Stuart Turner Return?

Actually, first he would pass through waivers, so another team could select him. But he would retain Rule 5 restrictions so that is unlikely (but not impossible, the Twins did that with Erik Komatsu a few years ago).

A return to the Twins would be the most likely. Next most likely would be the two sides working out a trade (like the Twins did with Scott Diamond a few years ago too).

I haven't found a single source that states he would go through waivers.  He would be offered back to the Twins for $25,000, or the price of three beers at Target Field.

It looks like Stuart Turner has made the Reds Opening Day roster and he'll stick with them at least until Devin Mesoraco is able to come back.

Perfect, let the Reds season him up with some MLB experience before the Twins kindly refuse their overtures to retain him for a PTBNL in a month or so.

That's gonna be some great drama...

The problem is that average minor leaguers don't make it to the big leagues. I'm not sure that citing his milb league average bat is a compliment.

Major leagues tend (though not always obviously) to do something similar to their minor league numbers with guys who are much younger than their leagues being the exception to the rule.  Average isn't bad, but it isn't good either. It indicates a long learning curve to reach that potential.

I'd be happy to get Turner back. I like Garver and even Murphy better at this point, but given the how thin the position is, the more tickets the better.

Relevant passage:

4. If a club wishes to send a Selected Player to the minors, the player must be placed on Outright Assignment Waivers, where any of the other 29 MLB clubs can claim the player for the $50,000 Rule 6 waiver price (formerly $25,000), and if claimed off waivers, the player continues to have Rule 6 Selected Player status.

5. If the Selected Player is not claimed off Outright Waivers, the player then must be offered back to the club from which he was drafted, and the player's former club can re-claim the player for $50,000 (formerly $25,000), with the player being automatically outrighted to the Reserve List of the minor league club from which he was drafted.

It's almost always a formality, but Rule 5 players indeed have to clear waivers before they can be returned to their original teams.

(Also, the return price / waiver fee is now $50,000 because the original Rule 5 price has also doubled, to $100,000.)

I have no idea what kind of pitching he faced (sadly, B-Ref didn't track spring training stats, so I don't even have their "Opposition Quality" estimate), but Turner put up a nice line this spring:

34 AB, 13 hits, 2 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 6 BB, 6 K, 1 HBP, .382/.488/.647, 1.135 OPS

14.6% BB rate, 14.6% K rate

The two triples suggest there was some kind of weirdness (weather? stadium conditions? bad outfielders?). But he wasn't overmatched in his first real spring training exposure (he only had 3-4 PA in each of the 2014-2016 Twins spring trainings).

Dan Rohlfing could actually come up from AA if some kind of crunch came to pass.

He wouldn't necessarily do it in such a way that had us completely forget how good Mauer was back in the day, but he could do it.

I don't see a 'shortage of catchers' problem.

Stuart Turner's ceiling is JR Murphy.  If the Reds are willing to give someone like Sal Romano, Wyatt Strahan, or Tyler Mahle, the Twins should do it, with their eyes closed.

Honestly Thrylos, I love the way you think.
